Hong Kong Cafes with a noodle focus almost always end up being my preferred places to chow down…read more Chui Hing (潮興魚蛋粉) is combines no nonsense service with killer food, along with affordable pricing and 24 hour availability to boot. The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. The staff is really helpful and welcoming.

The prices are also very reasonable. I bought beef ball and wonton, wonton noodle soup. I didn't ask to have the noodles separate, but they still retained a good amount of chew by the time I got back up top the hotel. You can pay a little extra anywhere to ask them pack separate. The wontons are ok, beef balls are good, noodles are good, soup okay. The milk tea wasn't very strong but has a nice authentic back flavor. Everything was ready in under 5 minutes. Very good for takeout!

My roomie ordered beef rice roll ($21 HKD) and I got Century Egg with Beef Congee ($30 HKD) with doughnut ($12) and my food was big. Congee was big enough for one person and I couldn't believe the doughnut was big. Later I regretted getting doughnut with congee, because I couldn't finish it all. Delish food for a reasonable price. I would come back here again if I happen to stop at HK for a layover flight.

It's communal seating, so don't be surprised if you're sitting with other people. I like that this place has a napkin dispenser, which a lot of restaurants in Hong Kong don't give you napkins. Their congee is good and bubbling hot. Not the best I've had in Hong Kong but it's super quick and cheap. Their soy bean milk is delicious and homemade with no added preservatives. It's great cold too. Their rice crepes aren't too bad either. I like the sesame and sweet sauce they provide you on your table. Each time I've been here, it's been with my parents so they usually speak to them/my sparse Cantonese had gotten me by, not too sure if they speak too much English here. It gets crowded at peak times, but you can usually get a seat. Turn over time is super fast. They're efficent and friendly enough!

Since…read moreI didn't get my HK Style French Toast from Australia Dairy Company the other day, I was excited to try it here. Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. When shopping at Ladies' Market in Mong Kok, do your homework. If they are open from 12pm, DO NOT…read morebe like us and go early. We were anxious to come back after previously walking away with great bargains from the Ladies' Market. This time we came early at about 1030am. But guess what? Some of the stalls were empty and for some stalls, the vendors had some of their merchandise displayed and were busy still setting up. The vendors were ignoring us. So what did we do? We went looking for food. We clearly had over an hour to kill so we walked along the street looking for a light meal and came across Yong Yuen Noodle House (YYNH). From the outside, this clearly was a small restaurant specializing in Hong Kong style comfort foods of noodles, won tons and beef stew brisket. The leader of the group decided to give this place a try and we hit jackpot. As we sat down, we noticed the chairs were smaller and lower which made it difficult to sit. For me, I almost had a Charlie Horse! After we took our seats I grabbed a menu. Luckily, I am able to read the Chinese menu and decided on the classic bowl of fishcake with look funn noodles. I also noticed seaweed as a side dish which seemed interesting so I added that on. I like restaurants that advertise house made items and in this case, their fish cake. I judge it by the texture, appearance and taste. The fishcake had a firm texture with a good bounce. You could taste the fish (it wasn't fishy at all), white pepper and sesame oil. There was a balance in these flavors which stood out in the bowl. I noticed the look funn noodles were sliced thinner than what I'm used to. I added the seaweed which brought another level of flavor and I enhanced my bowl by adding some red wine vinegar and chili sauce. When I was done polishing my bowl of noodles, I didn't feel stuffed. As a side dish we also had some choy sum with oyster sauce that was good. When in Hong Kong, order a glass of milk tea that is served either hot or cold. It was still warm in mid-November so I asked for the iced version. The milk tea was amazing. It's a far cry from what I drink here at home. The brewed tea is strong and has a great balance with evaporated milk and sweet condensed milk. It was so good that I polished my glass quickly and ordered a second one. Service was standard for a Chinese restaurant. Because we spoke in Cantonese we got exactly what was ordered on a timely basis. Not sure if service would be compromised if you don't speak Chinese. Overall, we walked away very happy because not only did we kill time, we had tasty Hong Kong comfort food that didn't put a dent in our wallets. It was priced reasonably where I definitely would recommend if you're in the area.

The storefront isn't as good but they have drinks there. I've been coming here since I was 5, definitely a local favorite. Their fish balls are so good here, as well as their beef brisket with tendon. They have the traditional HK noodles to choose from, so no mai sin but their hoi fun is good!! Be careful of their chili oil... it's a killer! Their seats are crowded and expect 4 other people to be sat down with you . And also, expect a line. The atmosphere doesn't get more authentic Hong Kong than this place as you're slurping up noodles sitting on a wooden chair in a dark alleyway in Mong Kok
