I liked that they had different items out on display that looked fresh. The menu was in French, but one of the women working there noticed we might need help and asked us what we were looking for. So friendly! She also helped us figure out what was gluten-free / gluten-friendly. We ordered a gluten-free avocado toast with an egg sunny side up (pretty solid) a ham and cheese croissant (they pressed it so it was dense and it was perfect) , and we had originally brought our own coffee in to-go cups, but they transferred it into mugs for us when we stayed. I was worried about an extra charge for doing that, but there was none, which was a nice touch. A couple notes: - They take credit cards - Wi-Fi is available - One weird/practical thing: you can't use a laptop until 3 PM so I wouldn't really come here in the morning if I needed somewhere to work. - They seem to be known for their crêpes, although we didn't try one, so I might come back! The total came out to $19.83 CAD. The tables weren't very clean, but overall, a nice experience and glad that the ambience was quiet and welcoming for the morning.

On my kid's last full day in Montreal, we were walking around Old Montreal, deciding what to do for…read morelunch, when we realized, we need to have a quintessentially French meal - but something light, and crepes immediately came to mind. And this creperie was centrally located on the main drag (Rue St. Paul), and I know it's been here for years and years, as I've passed the sign for eons. So in we went! The restaurant is located up a flight of stairs and there is no elevator, FYI, so if you are mobility challenged, this would not be ideal. Upstairs, the interior is warm and chalet-like, with wooden planks on walls, exposed brick, lots of light from the windows, and wall shelving containing European and Quebec chocolates, maple syrups, etc. Behind the counter you can see the guy making the crepes one by one. Pretty legit. We wanted to get a savory and a sweet crepe and share them both. We first ordered a chicken and cheese crepe (my kid LOVES chicken) but we were told they had no chicken (strange, at lunch-time in a busy restaurant in a busy part of town, eh? Chicken is so....basic). So we opted for a cheese and asparagus crepe. For the dessert crepe we ordered a classic strawberry crepe. We said we'd share them both and have the strawberry one "for dessert", thinking they'd bring out the savory one first. Perhaps there was a language barrier, but the server brought out both crepes at the same time. Oh well. Both crepes were made with the PERFECT crepe-pancake: super thin, delicate, with the perfect firmness and perfect sweetness. I've not had better crepes even in France. As for the fillings....we weren't that keen on the cheese and asparagus crepe. The asparagus was stringy, and the cheese was way too salty. This savory crepe came with a small salad on the side and, for me, this salad was the best. part of this dish; the lettuce was super fresh and the salad dressing was delicious. The strawberry crepe was wonderful: perfectly filed with the right amount of sweetened fresh strawberries and small dollops of fresh whipped cream. Definitely the strawberry crepe was the hit of the meal. The cheese-asparagus crepe cost $17 and the strawberry one, $15. I thought these prices somewhat high but I guess, for freshly made crepes in a touristy part of town, it's par for the course.

We did not plan to eat at Spanel. Montreal was raining. We were hungry. Mom spotted a crêpe…read morerestaurant. And thus another carefully researched Dogba travel experience was born. Spanel actually has two outdoor spaces -- a surprisingly large street terrace out front and a smaller backyard patio tucked away behind the restaurant surrounded by greenery. Both looked excellent for dogs. Unfortunately, it was raining. Fortunately, I am adorable. The lovely people at Spanel kindly allowed me to come inside with Mom and Dad, where I settled into my carrier by the window and immediately began supervising brunch. Then Mom discovered the menu. Every crêpe is named after a different Montreal neighborhood. Oh no. This was no longer brunch. This was research. Mom chose The Village, which came with Toulouse sausage, scrambled eggs, caramelized onions and strong cheddar, all tucked inside a buckwheat crêpe. She also had an iced latte. Dad ordered a croissant and Coke. I ordered nothing, despite being Head of the Canada Research Department. Once again, the organizational structure of this family makes absolutely no sense. The restaurant itself is exactly the kind of little neighborhood place we love finding while traveling -- cozy, casual and full of personality, with chalkboard menus covering the walls, exposed brick, plants and even a piano. It feels much more like a local café than a tourist brunch stop. And sometimes the places you stumble upon turn out to be the ones you remember. Dogba's verdict: 4 paws Dog welcome: rainy-day exceptional Letting a soggy traveling pup inside: above and beyond Hidden backyard patio: tiny green oasis Big front terrace: excellent people-watching potential Crêpes named after Montreal neighborhoods: brilliant Mom's iced latte: apparently necessary Dad's croissant: dangerously within sniffing distance Canada Research Department opportunities: extensive Crêpe allocated to Dogba: 0% My only concern is that there are enough neighborhood crêpes on that wall to require several return visits. I am willing to make that sacrifice. For research.
