He now has a new worker, which wasn't a thing before, since Jimmy did all the work himself--kudos to him . So one day, I'm at the shop for a simple regular oil change and decided to upgrade to synthetic upon Jimmy's recommendation ("lmao"). Next thing I know, he's inspecting the 150cc and decides to change the brakes, without consent; what are you doing?! He looks at me with a funny face , rolls his pointer finger to show me how bad the brakes were (they were done, done ). I said, "Damn Jimmy, you could had least told me first." Still one of the best mechanics in New York City that will service your scooter. The owner is surly and not always a very pleasant guy but he knows how to fix your bike or will tell you the bad news when the bike can't/isn't worth the money for the repair. If he doesn't have the parts for his bikes, he will help you order than and you'll be back on the road once he gets the parts. Even though the customer service can leave much to be desired, the prices are super reasonable, the mechanics are honest, and there are no lies (which is surprisingly rare for mechanics in NYC). I have had him service three different kinds of scooters and now my motorcycle and have always had good results. If you call, he will sometimes say he is too busy to work on a bike and it is easier if you just bring the bike in. Zoom Scooter is also one of the cheapest shops to pick up a motorcycle helmet, and most of their helmets are HJC, so they are DOT and ECE approved helmets (not crap helmets). The guy also sells some other motorcycle and scooter accessories like NY State approved sunglasses and chains, rain covers, etc. Zoom Scooter also sells scooters, however the stock of these scooters aren't consistent and often times they are sold out of bikes. It is best to call to see what they have available. Zoom Scooters only sells GAS POWERED SCOOTERS and NO ELECTRIC SCOOTERS ARE SOLD HERE. Somethings to note: The shop is CASH ONLY. Yelp has it flagged that he takes credit, he does not take credit and will direct you to ATMS nearby. Come with cash if it is a simple thing like changing engine or gear oil, coolant, brakes, changing out a light or spark plug, etc. If its going to be service that needs parts, I would ask for a price then come back with money when the job is done. It is best to leave your phone number when you leave a bike so he can call back when the job is done. A few weeks before the global outbreak, I drove about 13 miles all the way to Maspeth Queens, to find a legendary moped shop. I was having trouble sourcing a few custom pieces and figured if anyone would have it, it would be them. When I got there, I was super disappointed to learn they had moved. According to the friendly fellas at the business across the street, the shop had move to somewhere in Florida. They actually recommended I check out a shop about 5 minutes away, called Zoom Scooter and had some very nice words to say about the owner. I was a little hesitant as scooter folks and moped folks don't often get along (I know I know.. but it's true!) but I figured I came all that way and the recommendation was good, so what the heck. There were three guys in their shop and they were all funny, laidback, and super knowledgeable about scooters and bikes in general. While they didn't have any of the specific parts that I needed (antique moped parts are very specialized), I noticed they carried Kryptonite locks for a pretty good price. Since a lock was actually high on my 'must-get' list, I ended up buying a heavy duty Kryptonite New York chain from them. Their debit card machine was down at the time so I had go to a Chase ATM a short drive away. Jimmy the owner was super cool and even often me a bit of a discount since I had to go out of my way to withdraw cash. While I was there, several other customers came in-and-out and all seemed like very enthusiastic regulars. He had funny banter with all of them too. I can't believe I've been remiss in writing this review. Jimmy and his shop are pure gold. I currently ride a Yamaha TMAX (2009) that runs like a champ for me. When I first bought it - used - Jimmy gave it a good once-over (checking fluids, brakes, tires and whatnot) and installed a custom muffler that came with it. The muffler installation was more involved than we thought, but he stuck to his original quote. I have since then serviced my bike there, put on new tires, regular maintenance, you name it. Jimmy is fair on everything to do with a service appointment. Timing, pricing, the works. To put it in perspective, I've owned and driven maxi-scooters since 2004, starting with Piaggio (Vespa GT200 and then the BV 350) to BMW (GT 650). The problem with these bikes was always the upkeep. High prices for parts, labor and just dealing with the constant issues they had (plus, the Piaggio and BMW wouldn't start at anything below 20 degrees ....I'm a hardcore rider and will ride to 16 degrees (9 with windchill). Thankfully no such problem with the Yamaha. But I digress. Jimmy's shop compares to any of the "high maintenance shops" simply because he is a fair man that stands by his work and knows what he is doing. Jimmy's a good guy. His shop has been there for over a decade. He's a one man operation.. occasionally 2 on the weekends. He's able to work on things mostly Chinese and Taiwanese scooters that no one else will work on. He does Japanese and Italian ones too.
