My cider!
Emma W.

After climbing up the steps I need time to get my breath back and then it's taking away again with a great view of the Scott's monument and princes St. Tucked away from the city rumblings it's not too busy and you can always get a table at lunch by walking in from the street. They always have an offer on and I always seem to forget about it so I could be saving myself a small fortune. Zizzi's is a chain, so it's a simple menu. It's one of the few chains I like. Any pizza or pasta dish or actually any dish I've ordered has been good and tasty. I like looking at the specials board to see if there is anything new on the board to try. It's handy to meet mates and grab a quick working lunch although we've had to chase to pay the bill when we need to leave!

Delicious rustica pizza

Zizzi's is one of those chains (a bit like pizza express or prezzo) that's easy and familiar and nearly always has some sort of offer on. They have a few different restaurants in Edinburgh, but tonight for the first time I visited their Roxburgh Court restaurant, which opened last year. It's tucked away off the Royal Mile, down Mary King's Close. I was surprised at the lack of signs for it on the Royal Mile, but I quite liked the way it was tucked away. Like I mentioned, these restaurants always have some sort of offer on, so in we went, armed with our '50% off' voucher. The place was lovely inside, and staff were very friendly as we entered. The menu was much the same as any Zizzi's restaurant, filled with pizzas, pastas, calzones, risottos and a few meat and fish dishes. We started with delicious mozarella garlic bread- this had got to be the BEST garlic bread ever. I big wooden platter, laden with melty, gooey, caramelised oniony, garlicky goodness! The portion is super huge so could do for 2 people (probably more, but hey, once you've tasted it you'll not want to share too much!) We also got some delicious calamari with a lemony mayo. The mains were great too, I was there with my family and we got a whole mixture of pizzas and pastas. They do lovely thin rustica pizzas and my mum had something called a spiedini which was a sort of hanging skewer with prawns, salmon, sea bream, pepper and courgettes. At the end of the meal my Gran told us it was 'the best pasta she had ever eaten' so they were doing something right! We finished off with some gelato to share, and it was lovely (if a little small.) The restaurant has a lovely view out across Princes Street and the Balmoral and we saw some Edinburgh trams passing by. With it being a large chain you sort of know what to expect with Zizzi's and it's not maybe the most exciting place to eat. Saying that, they have some great offers and the food is tasty. I think this restaurant was nicer than other branches I have been to.

This was the best garlic bread ever! Order it! You won't regret it!

Fantastic Italian food. The garlic bread is outstanding. It's a hidden gem off the Royal Mile.

Our hotel referred us to this restaurant within walking distance. They even called and made a…read morereservation just in case they were busy. What a find! Food came out hot and delicious. I had lasagna and my friend had a chicken dish. Both were full of flavor. Then we decided to treat ourselves to dessert since they are famous fir their gelato. Wow! Dessert was even better than the meal. Not sure when I will be back to Edinburgh but I will definitely return here if so.

We went here for dessert as they were noted for their gelato based desserts. The guy behind the…read moredessert counter was nice but the rest of the crew seemed rushed and not to happy to have us eat in with just desserts. I ordered the Haggis Ravioli as it was on my list of delicacies to eat in Edinburgh but the rest of our orders were the sweet stuff. We got the Affogato served with espresso in a moka pot which was a first time for us. The crepe and the chocolate caked served with gelato were even better. The main restaurant has Italian caricatures and murals which was a nice touch. The secondary dining area (The Hispaniola) had feels of a Spanish pirate ship which was odd for an Italian themed restaurant. The latter was the site of the Rutherford's Bar (1834-2007) frequented by famous clientele and then was transformed into a Treasure Island themed restaurant. Food was really good. I'll even come back when in Edinburgh. Service could use a little work though.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.
