We stopped here on a whim. I recently saw people saying that it was voted the best burger in Mississippi. It is by far not the best burger in Mississippi. I can name 10 restaurants in the Brandon /Flowood/ Jackson- Metro area that has burgers with more flavor than "the Zip's Burger". The french fries were not well done. They were very soggy actually they were inedible. That's why they were left on the plate. I added salt to each bite of my burger in order to have a little bit of flavor. Yes, it is a real ground beef, hand patty burger, and real potatoes and onion rings, but they are not fried in hot oil . Therefore, they are soggy. I'm rounding this review up to 4 stars. The service is consistently great and super friendly. 5 stars! The fried dill pickle chips were as near perfect as a fried dill pickle chip can be. Lightly battered and super crispy; addictive... 5 stars! The fried catfish was great, hush puppies good, coleslaw was fresh but just 'ok' ... 4 stars. The shrimp po' boy was a complete and utter disappointment! I expect a correctly made po' boy when I'm back home in the south. This was not a correctly made po' boy. The shrimp were cooked well and were tasty... tomatoes were fresh tasting and good. The missing pickles I could forgive as not everyone makes a po' boy with dill pickles. However it fell so very short when it came to the bread.... What were they thinking! No French bread! Come on! So close to New Orleans and the coast in general ... and you couldn't get authentic bread! When it came out I wanted to cry. Get some New Orleans French bread! Then, I asked for tartar sauce ... and they brought me three packets of yucky pre-packaged tartar sauce! Seriously! I'm in Mississippi for heavens sake ... everyone makes their own tartar sauce! I'm hard pressed to give this po'boy more than 2 stars! The tea was great! 4 stars Onion Rings were super well made but lacking in salt ... as in there was none. Still good. 3.5 stars. Very tiny, unassuming establishment. It is not modern nor chic, but you can tell it has seen innumerable amount of guests over the years The staff is very welcoming and friendly, and the patrons were chummy. They made the atmosphere uncertainly to be in. We had been informed in the past of their hamburger steak had been named best of in the steak. Well, we had to try, of course Our drinks and lunch came within minutes of ordering. The food came out hot and fresh, always a great sign. The turnip greens were good, but with some drops of Crystal's hot sauce, it leveled up the greens. Some liquor was on the bottom, and did what I was taught to do by some people I had met a couple of decades ago, I soaked pieces of my cornbread muffin into it. It is now my favourite way to eat cornbread with turnip greens. The green beans were still green with a slight crunch, not the most southern way to cook green beans, however, it is definitely my preferred. It was a little sweeter than I liked, but still delicious. Now for the mainstay, the hamburger steak. It was flavourful, and still had a great taste of beef. I did not detect any fillers, which is many people's home method, I think? It had a glossy gravy poured over it, which was even more delightful. Beef and gravy will always be one of my comfort foods. My daughter and I went here before an appt. In Magee. The burgers were good. My homestyle fries were very soggy and sitting in grease on my plate. My daughter's battered fries were good; however, they were cold. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The real ticker was that the power went off just as we were finishing up our meal. The only cash we had was $100 bill. They did not have change. I offered to PayPal/Venmo them and let them put it in the register later. They said no. I told them I didn't live in Magee. They told me to write my phone number on the back of my ticket and they would call me when the power came on and I could give them card info over the phone. I was not comfortable with this solution. I finished up what I had to do in Magee and got cash/change. I went back to pay my bill in person. Some places had begun to get their power back; however, it was still dark in Zip's. A young lady opened the door and said their power was out. I said," still? It's coming back on at some places. "I said," I just want to pay my bill and held up the cash. ". Others had paid cash earlier while we were there that didn't need change. She "Hannah" said they were closed bc they had no power. I said, " I need to pay for my meal. "She said'"our power is off. " My daughter became irritated at her rudeness and began driving off. I told her to stop. I walked up to the door where I was met by the lady with short blonde hair who usually works behind the register. She said we are closed. I said, "I'm aware holding up $$25 cash. I need to pay my $24.76 bill." ( I wasn't expecting any change!" She said you can't we can't get in the cash drawer. Another young lady told her yes, they had a cash box. The friendly young lady then proceeded to the register where she found my ticket and allowed me to pay my bill. This restaurant does not live up to the hype it is given unfortunately. Now the food is alright, with the Zips burger and battered fries actually being tasty if cooked right. The service on the other hand is really what brings this place down. Some servers are wonderful to deal with and make for a great experience while others downright will piss you off with how rude they are. Customer service is definitely not their strength here. And the seating situation is terrible they spent no money on actual seating or comfort for the customers and rather have tables strewn around in no particular order. 4/10 the food was the only decent part of this restaurant. We found this place by chance on Yelp and decided to stop in for lunch. Soo glad we did! The place isn't fancy, but don't let that deter you. We both ordered a Zip burger and split an order of onion rings. Their signature Zip sauce was soo yummy we even dipped our onion rings in it. The huge hand pressed burger patty was fresh, seasoned perfectly, and came with lettuce, tomato and their famous Zip sauce, all stuffed into a fresh warm bun. Our server was friendly and our food came very quickly. We were back on the road in about 30 minutes. If you're traveling on Rt. 49 and want to support a locally owned business instead of those fast food joints selling chemically preserved "franken" foods, then this IS the place to stop at. I debated between a 3 and 4 but the hubby said it's been better on other visits so 4 it is. The server was sweet and attentive. The wait for food was a bit longer than we like but we don't mind waiting for hot food. This is where it went south. The burger meat was hot but the bun was cold as a wedge. The onion rings were cold and under cooked. My husband described them as anemic. They needed more time in the oil to crisp up and they were not even close to fresh. My smothered steak was tasty but luke warm. It's a little dive so we don't expect super clean but we do expect at the very least, semi-hot food. Color us disappointed this go round. read more

Man, I was hoping I was gonna be able to leave a better review. Saw them in the Mississippi Today magazine and drove in from out of town. They know how to make a beef patty, no doubt. And the Zip sauce is yummy. But the buns were ice cold and the onion rings were ice cold and the service was terribly slow. Our waitress didn't check on us one single time. Took our drink order and brought us those, then took our food order and brought us that. Then disappeared til she brought our check. I would've liked some extra napkins and a slice of onion I had forgotten to add to my burger, but never got the chance to ask. A tiny local cafe. Not exciting inside or out. Serves a large menu. We met a couple of relatives here that we hadn't seen in a long time and they picked this place. The only good things about it was that the food tasted good, the sodas were fine, and the meal was inexpensive; otherwise everything else was bad. We had two waitresses. The one we started with talked so fast that we had a hard time understanding her, so we asked that she please slow down (which she didn't). Then, when she was bringing our starters (salads and some crackers), she knew she was carrying too many plates at once. She asked I grab one of the plates but it was too late and the salad spilled onto me and into my lap and on the floor. It remained on the floor the whole time we were there. There rest of the restaurant didn't look much better than that -- there were crumbs and food droppings all over the restaurant floor around the tables. The girl got us a new salad but otherwise we received no compensation for the mess. It was 30 minutes before we could get drink refills and only half of us got a refill because the girl forgot about the rest. Afterwards she passed us off to another waitress that wasn't any nicer to us. We spent over an hour waiting for our food, only to receive cool battered fries, not at all warm. Turns out the to-go orders take priority over those that dine in. Our fries were replaced with fresh hot ones and the rest of the meal was enjoyable. Im not sure what we did to make our old waitress swap us but she wasn't at all nice to us. We don't live in the area so I can't say we will be back anyway. read more
