I have never left a Yelp review before, but my experiences with Zipcar have taken away both my money and my sanity. I would leave them zero stars if I could and refer them to the Hague to be tried for crimes against humanity.
Some examples:
A few months ago, I went to the grocery store late at night to get some snacks during my finals week. When I attempted to leave the parking lot, the Zipcar would not start. I called customer service, and they told me that I would have to wait with the car for three hours while a tow truck came to get the car. I was told that if I left the car before the three hours had elapsed, that they would charge me for abandoning the vehicle. I waited from midnight to around 3 AM in a dark parking lot. I was shivering due to the cold with a phone that was about to die.
Customer service was extremely abrasive, rude, and dismissive of me, insisting that I would need to wait the full three hours due to "policy," even though it was obviously not my fault that the car wouldn't start. I was told they would call me with updates, which never happened.
When I called customer service at the end of the three hours, they told me that the system had not registered that I was in the car and that the engine had been "locked," which was the reason that the car wasn't starting. After this update (which I had to call in and inquire about after three hours), it took less than a minute for them to unlock the engine and start the car. I was told that I would receive one hour of free driving time because of the inconvenience (again, I had waited for three hours), but this time was never added to my account.
Even this wouldn't have been enough for me to cancel my membership, but it happened again a month later!
I was also unfairly charged several other times due to the Zipcar system not processing my extensions and customer service being extremely unhelpful. Once, my trip was "ended" by customer service when I had a problem during a ride, and I again had to sit in a parking lot for about an hour while they resolved it. After all of that, I was still charged for the trip to get the car back to campus, even though I had not ended the trip.
I have been charged over 100+ dollars in undue "fees" and have never made any progress with customer service in getting my money back or gaining any sort of restitution for major inconveniences that I have faced because of Zipcar's faulty interface and system.
Worst company ever! Do not make an account! My only hope is that one day they will pay for their crimes against me in the court of the most holy!! I'm just kidding.... but seriously, literally any other option is better and more reliable than Zipcar (especially if you are a college student). read more
