This is the worst zipcar experience ever. Staffs were super unhelpful. When there's an issue with the car there's no way to reach the staff.

Absolute rip off! Charged $404 for towing and late fees because the car's translission failed despite it being not my fault and contacting Zipcar in advance of the end of rental time twice on the phone. Zipcar refuses to return my money after contacting customer service by phone and chat and disputing the charge via my credit card. The car was with a low tire pressure in one of the wheels which we have only discovered when the trip begun. The car's front passenger window was open when we came to pick it up and the driver's seat had a hole in it made by a cigarette. Overall it was dirty on the inside and it gave an impression of a poorly maintained vehicle. The car's transmission failed unexpectedly and without any action from my side. The transmission could not be shifted into reverse or parking mode. I have contacted Zipcar customer support by telephone twice and explained to the service representative that the car is broken and that this is the reason why I am not able to return it to the correct location on time. The service representative advised that I should leave the car at the gas station. I indicated to the support representative that we should not be charged any extra fees as it is not our fault that the vehicle got broken. I was not able to end the trip in the Zipcar app as it was not located at the dedicated parking spot so I pushed it out of the way of other cars to a parking space and locked it prior to leaving the gas station. I was not offered assistance to get to my place of residency by the Zipcar customer representative and had to walk home. The same evening I contacted Zipcar support in the Zipcar app as I was charged $403.92 for the late return and asked that the above amount be returned to me as the reason I was not able to return the car was that it got broken and therefore I am not responsible to pay these fees. On the contrary it is Zipcar responsibility to maintain their vehicles properly and take care of repairs and associated costs. read more

From 2001 to 2012, I lived in Boston and solely relied on Zipcar and public transportation to get around. I loved using Zipcar. Their cars were always newer models and in pristine condition. I recently moved to Providence and thought that I would give Zipcar a try again. I was disappointed at the condition of their cars. It wasn't just that the car I rented from Zipcar was old. It was also absolutely filthy. Not just superficially filthy, but thoroughly filthy. The cloth seats were stained and there were cigarette ashes everywhere. It smelled of cigarettes and who knows what else. I was afraid of catching an STD just from seating in it. It's as if over the last 10 years Zipcar became a junky and let itself go. It's sad to see its decline, but I don't want to be around Zipcar's messy self. read more

Awesome! Get to trash this completely garbage company in two different cities! What they don't obviously mention on the site is that if you previously had an account, your account is not 'instantly approved' like it is for non-previous-members-- you need to wait for a new Zipcard to arrive. Considering we need the car tomorrow, that's not a super big help, now is it. Whatever, so we'll close the account and get a refund for the $25 application fee. Whoopsie! That application fee is not in any circumstances refundable because they had to give it to their high-priced misery consultants to create new and interesting ways to torture people like me who are dumb enough to still use this urinal fire of a rental company. This was the absolute worst experience I've ever had with any company in my life. Signup was quick and easy, and I was super excited to rent a car since it would be my first time driving in four years after a tragic loss. I needed to buy some computer equipment, and then I wanted to get back to the parking spot and head straight to my bus stop to go to work. The door wouldn't unlock for twenty minutes. Then I had to spend a half hour doing a full inspection on the car since there were little dings and problems all over the car. Then, after a pleasant trip where my only problem was I had to wait five minutes every time I wanted to lock and unlock the door, I find you had put a hold on three different charges that was three times the agreed upon amount, so I couldn't afford the equipment I had rented the car to get. Then to top it all off, somebody had parked in my parking space. I had to wait ten minutes on hold ten minutes before my time expired. The woman on the phone told me to find a parking spot and then call them back. Despite telling her I couldn't wait around since I had to be to work, I was threatened with fines, so I did as I was asked. A half hour later (there was an event in the city, so there were next to no parking spots), I finally was able to reach a person who said I now had to spend extra time taking pictures of the car and its location and responding to an email about where it was. I didn't get to fulfill my goal for renting the car, and I was two hours late to work. To top it all off, I just got another random charge of 90 dollars from zipcar, probably because they didn't like where i parked it or because they didn't read my report about how the car had cigarette burns and dents and dings all over it, or because i forgot to mention the HAY I found on the ground. I don't care. You're lucky I didn't drive it off a cliff after the problems you caused me. Keep my 90 bucks, but I'm NEVER using this AWFUL service again. read more

I rented a car and when I went to pick it up it was dirty and smelly with no gas so I called in as directed, the customer service rep insisted I leave the car there and get into a new reservation, that he would reserve for me. I agreed he told me to go to the new car and I would be all set he also mentioned he would note the system for future reference or if I had any problem with the new car. So when I got to the new car I called back due to the fact the car wasn't unlocking, the information about the new reservation wasn't in the system and the new reservation was NEVER BOOKED! To put the Cherry on top I was charged as if I had two reservation in one day at the same time. Impossible right? When I called in to fix the charges the agent argued me down that I was wrong and I had the two cars out! Their customer service is terrible, everyone in their call center is on a different page and don't completely understand your request, they make you feel like your always wrong! I will never be a customer again and I will never recommend anyone to this company! read more

Zipcar is no longer keeping cars in Newport, RI. I signed up a week ago and was unable to get a car. I called them today, a week after signing up, to ask about when cars would be available. They asked me where they could get cars from near by. I said it wasn't my roll to find cars for them. Since I had signed up just a week ago I asked for my money back. The person on the phone, who was pleasant and helpful, immediately said she would refund my money. I haven't looked into the state of Zipcar but my conclusion is that since they are willing to return the money of a customer who has just signed up for their service they are going in a direction of not providing that service to customers. read more

Horrible company. I've used previous times before, and have always had an issue whether it is being charged a false late fee, a false toll fee, etc etc, the list goes on. YESTERDAY I rented a car to go get my Covid vaccine. I park in a parking garage and go get my shot. I come back, go to unlock the car from my mobile app, and it says the car is out of range. Why is it not mentioned ANYWHERE that this will happen if you park in a garage. Had nothing to do with my cell service either. Didn't have my zip card with me because I always use my phone. So I call zipcar and they say they're sending a tow truck. Ok great. 6 hours later, stranded in the city, having someone drive from out of state to pick me up, back and forth calls with zipcar and tow companies, someone FINALLY shows up to break into the car and push it out of the garage where my app would recognize the car. Absolutely ridiculous that there is no warning about how this can happen in parking garages. Was left in the city alone for 6 whole hours and still have to call tomorrow to make sure I am refunded every last penny. Do not recommend at all, and NEVER park in a garage with these cars!!!! read more

Even a one star is too much for their inflexibility and poor accommodations in their customer service. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE and there is a reason why their yelp rate is so low. I reserved a vehicle for a 24 hour period. I had some changes in my plan and wanted to reserve the car an hour earlier than my original reservation. When I went on the app to change it, there was another reservation right before me. I saw that there was another vehicle available that was at a higher rate than my original reservation. I called customer service and requested to switch me into a different vehicle. They said I'd have to cancel my reservation and make a new reservation Yes, it already doesn't make sense. And of course I'd have to pay cancellation fee, which is the original reservation's total cost minus tax (~$85 in this case) and also pay for my new reservation ($98). So in total $183, just to switch into a different vehicle. They argued that other customers cannot view the vehicle since it's all blocked off due to my reservation and that is why they charge the cancellation fee. I understood the purpose of the cancellation policy, but it didn't make sense, because I'd be switching into a different vehicle and the vehicle that I originally reserved for would be available to other customers once the swap is done. They kept repeating it's their cancellation policy and I agreed to follow the policy when I signed up for the membership. I told them there is a vehicle that is available for more than the time period I would like to use it, while the vehicle that I originally reserved for has another reservation right before me, so I cannot make changes to the start time. They seemed to have understood the problem for a millisecond, and told me to go review the cancellation policy as if I'm asking for something unreasonable. I said it doesn't seem that difficult for them to make such change and be flexible and accommodating. They asked me to wait while they go review my records. When they got back, they said they have already made some accommodations previously for courtesy and they cannot do it anymore and that only time they can switch me into a different vehicle is when there's something wrong with the original vehicle. And they made it sound like as if I was asking for something unreasonable. This is how unaccommodating, inflexible, and unreasonable zipcar customer service is. I also have another incidence when they made me wait for 5 hours for a roadside assistance. Terrible terrible customer service back then too. Every time I call them to see if the roadside assistance is coming at all, their customer service agent didn't have any idea what I was talking about and I always had to explain the situation from the beginning every time I made a call. Even though I drove the vehicle only for 3 hours, they charged me more than that and only gave me $20 driving credit. Accounting for the $20 driving credit, all I got compensated for their poor customer service, roadside assistance system, and 5 hours of wait time was only $10 driving credit. Great job. read more

This malfunctioning company have one of the most horrible customer service I've ever experienced : I've been trying for a month now just to sign in / apply for zip card, which ends up in crashed website all the time. I've called them more than 10 times so far and half of the time they don't know what's going on and just give me temporary solution which never leads to the next step. They hung up the call for twice in a row -- is this a joke? If this whole sevice is a joke then that explains everything. read more

I have received double charges that they could not substantiate to my charge card company -over $140 for one day! When the charge card company reversed the charges, they told me they were good and put them back on. The last car we used was almost 3 miles away. It was farther than where it was going to be driven. Poorly run business. 2 years ago it ran smoothly, whatever changed has been disastrous. read more

I rented a zipcar yesterday because my car was in shop at 8:30 pm on the app it said my reservation was till 4pm today. At 5am this morning I go out to get in car and it won't start. I have my son call for me to tell them car won't start as I have cancer and was not feeling well and to ask to add my son to be able to have him drive car. They put in to end reservation and deleted it from the system so when I logged in I could no longer see the reservation was till 4pm but they charged me 96.41 from 8:30pm till 5 am the next morning. Then they told me when I called there was a kill switch that had been activated by them and they would have to come tow car and suspend my account even though my son never drove the car because he called for me they assumed i was not going to return car I guess instead of calling me or extending reservation and charging my card which would have been the proper way to handle this situation they treated me as if I was not responsible enough to have the car. I will never recommend zip car to anyone. I assume that's why the last time I rented someone had left their zipcard in the trunk. This is ridiculous my husband is a retired commander and I am a disabled state department contractor we both have top secret clearances and they couldn't call to talk to me about what was going on. read more

I just cancelled my membership. When I call a Zipcar rep to clarify reservation extensions and fees, I should be told the correct information. When I am told information that is INCORRECT and I act accordingly to the information I am given I should certainly NOT be charged. That is exactly what happened. I extended my original reservation for 1.5hrs but then realized I really needed it longer. I called back and asked if I extended it to such and such a time, would I have been charged additionally (I wasn't sure if the reservation would be pass the limit or within my current fee). If the rep had said 'no, you will be charged extra based on the extension', I would NOT have done so. I could have made other arrangements. I was VERY specific in my request and asked the question repeatedly, in fact, that is how I closed the conversation. The rep repeatedly assured me there would be no extra charges other than what I have been charged at that point. Not only was I charged extra but the extra charge caused an overdraft in my account (I only keep enough my in that account to cover current expenses, hence the repeated questions about the fees). When I discovered this, I called and asked that someone listen to the taped conversation so they could see that I was given wrong information. Well I got a very long-winded call from Lisa in the Providence office detailing all my reservation information, which I knew already (no she didn't bother to listen to the taped conversation), and then her telling me that because I went over the time there was nothing 'she or anyone in Zipcar that could do anything for me because that is policy'. It should be policy to have better trained reps, as well. I asked for information, was given wrong information and I acted based on what I was told. N o one bothered to listen to the conversation. Basically...'tough'. So fine. Zipcar, you just lost a customer. read more

This Saturday 9/24/16 I rented a car which ended up breaking down on me while on the highway. It just stopped working but I was able to make it to the breakdown lane. I called zipcar and pressed the number for "other zipcar emergency" because I didn't have a dead battery or a flat tire nor an accident. Not sure what zipcar's definition is of EMERGENCY but I was put on hold for 5 minutes till I was finally connected to a rep in INDIA!! This woman wanted to "check my car" and kept asking me questions about the car till I finally screamed at her to get me a tow-truck as I was stranded on an on-ramp with cars speeding by and not exactly safe. I was put on hold AGAIN to be connected to a local rep. While on hold I kept trying to get the car going just to get off the highway so I wouldn't be a sitting duck for awesome RI drivers. Eventually I was able to move and drove off with my hazards and pulled into a shopping plaza at which point I'd been on hold for more than 10 minutes and just hung up. I contemplated calling AAA since I have it and have them drive me home and zipcar could do whatever they wanted with their car from my house. I ended up getting a phone call from a local rep who took my info and said she'd call me back when she confirmed a tow truck but I would have to find alternate transportation (super!! I thought I was using alternate transportation. My bad!). Another half hour later, I got a call from another local rep saying my tow truck would be about a half hour (it was almost an hour). Overall, it took 2 hours for zipcar to get me a tow truck and leave me stranded with my laundry and groceries behind a price rite looking like a homeless person sitting in the grass. At least I was wearing my nice sweatshirt and had 4 bottles of wine to keep me company. Oh and they charged me for a full reservation "you returned on time. Sweet". Really?!?! They didn't send me their usual survey of how my trip was and no email regarding my "emergency". They always send emails confirming that you reported a dirty/damaged car. Why would you connect someone having an emergency in the USA to India? What can they do in India for me? That's negligent, and I will be notifying the BBB. Never mind the 5 minute hold time for an EMERGENCY!!! Who are these people?!?!? thank god i wasn't hurt or dying or something. i would have expired on hold. And how does a car service not provide car service in such situations? You can't call me a cab or an Uber or bring me another zipcar even if it's just to drive me home? FAIL!!!! read more

Absolutely horrible customer service, do not use Zipcar ever. Charged me for a ticket(one of those red light cameras, and in the picture you can tell that light literally changed while i was under it) that I never knew about until they emailed me that they were charging me for it. Didnt provide me any notice or proof until I emailed them, They could've easily emailed me when they received the ticket(they'll email you tons of promotions even if you say to not email you promotions) and allowed me to dispute the ticket and either have it dismissed or have it be made a lesser charge. Now, I'm out not only the money for the ticket PLUS a 30$ processing fee (for an 85$ ticket?!? WHats that processing fee for?!?! I take credit cards on my phone for a fee is that is a fraction of that) but now, this experience will make it harder/more expensive for when I go to get my own insurance later on, thanks a lot, awful awful service, do not use them ever, its only cheap if you never actually drive. read more
