    My medal and snack box

Run this race and I promise you won't regret it! ;) Even though you don't actually run through Zion, the views are scenic throughout the course...I was stopping at every mile to take pictures! This race was my first vacation race and from this experience I would love to do another. They were so well organized and the support for the runners was the best I've ever seen (probably due to the smaller race size about 2500 runners) Pre-race: there was a warming tent. They raffled off multiple prizes starting two hours before the start. The had bananas, coffee and hot chocolate out before the race. During: At each water table - they also had an electrolyte drink as well as honey stinger energy gel. After: they handed out boxes to each runner that had a bunch of snacks, they also had water, chocolate milk and bananas available. I was pretty worried beforehand about how cold it would actually be the morning of since we took the pre-race shuttle from the finish line to the start at about 530 am... And as a California girl anything below 60 for me is cold, but they had the warming tent so it wasn't too bad. When we started the run it was probably low 40's... I got away with wearing Capri pants, a tank layered with a dri-fit long sleeve that had holes for my thumbs and an ear warmer headband. I was able to take my long sleeve off about mile 4 and be fine without it for the rest of the run. Also, if you're looking for another reason to come back - You can complete one of their hiking challenges after the race to get 50% off the next year.

Ran this race in March 2016, and had a great time! Overall the race was well-organized and we had no issues with bib pickup or the race itself. PACKET PICK UP They had their expo the day before and they were flexible with letting other people pick up my bib. I left LA Friday afternoon, so I gave a copy of my ID to my sister so that she could get my bib for me. The shirt also came in multiple colors which was cool, and it had a beautiful design on it. COURSE t was nice to see a smaller race that didn't have 10,000+ participants and it was also great to see the cup free running. I didn't use the cup that they offered, and chose to use my own water bottle. The course itself is a continuous uphill but the elevation gain isn't that significant. It's only about 500ft total. Even though we didn't run through Zion National Park itself, it was nice to see the rock formations outside of the park. We were also able to run through the Zion Canyon Village near the end of the race. The best part about the race is that it's well stocked with snacks, gel packs, water, and electrolytes. There were also porto potties available. I didn't even pack any food because they gave out so much food during the race. At the end of the race they gave us a snack box and chocolate milk. The snacks were great! MEDAL The medal is amazing!!! One of the reasons why I ran this half marathon in the first place. Not only is the medal itself large, it also has nice etching on the back. OTHER STUFF! Make sure to pay attention to your e-mail and text messages if you choose to sign up for the race. They had to make some last minute changes because it rained that morning. Before the race started, the rain made it the ground super muddy so parking was a hassle. Luckily we were able to park at a church and a shuttle picked us up from the church and then brought us back there at the end of the race. Also, if you sign up with a team of 6 people, then you will all get a discount on your registration!

Truly disappointing. Always wanted to visit Zion so signed up for this half. Ran on rutted out access roads, past bar wire fences and through horse pastures. Saw Zion in the far distance for one brief stretch. The aid stations were great, I appreciated the cup-free race, and love my medal but I feel completely duped.

My wife and I are more than capable of a 35-38 minute 5k. This one took over an hour as we stood motionless in a bottleneck on a single track trail crowded with other runners. Over a mile straight uphill to start, gravel unstable road downhill to end. Of course the elite runners were the concern of the planners and everyone else was stuck. The original 5k was advertised as a flat fast course on a stable course. The actual run was anything but. The race was the talk of the half marathon the next morning with many runners complaining that the 5k left them only exhausted and frustrated. Anger seemed to be the loudest voice. The owners of vacation races owe everyone who signed up for the debacle a full refund and to revisit the ability of their course designers. They're going to get someone hurt. It was such a thrill to finally do a live in person race again after over a year plus of nothing…read more Of course living in the "post" Rona world of 2021 Spartan had to make some adjustments/safety measures to put on races this year. The changes include no spectators in the festival area, racers can only check in for their race 30 minutes before their start time, racers have to wear a mask before & after their race but it's optional during the race. They have sanitizing stations through the festival area and near most obstacles, no mud pits or water dunk walls. On their site they have a list of all the other rules and safety protocols. Overall I was satisfied with the new way their had to put on the race given the current state of the world. I feel a little crazy doing a "day of" there & back road trip to Vegas just for a race, but given California has already postponed (really cancelled) all the races Spartan had planned in the State leading up to the summer of 2021 (its barley spring right now) I'm glad I went. Also a few new things, Spartan has added parking & bag check fees into the registration process which is kind of a good thing if your forgot to bring cash with you on race day, but kind of a pain in the ass of your actually carpooling with someone else that's racing since you're paying for a spot you're not actually using.

I watched tons of Spartan obstacle videos beforehand and psyched myself out a bit and was incredibly nervous. But being here today and doing the race was definitely a memorable experience and now I want more. Everyone says you do Spartan once and you become addicted! They were right. My inspiration for doing this is a woman named Marla.Sweeney. A 74-year old who is a two time Trifecta finisher. That means she completed the Spartan Sprint, Super & Beast...all of them twice in order to get the Trifecta medals. I knew I definitely had no excuse! So on a whim, I joined my friend's team. With only a month and a half to train, I was consumed with Spartan and the training. Then the day FINALLY came and it was GO TIME!!! When we arrived on race day, there was this amazing feeling you get that I just can't quite describe. I saw the people out there, the vibe, the energy, the badasses...and I had this ridiculous adrenaline rush. I couldn't wait to do our race! This Spartan Race was very organized and so well done. They have tons of staff and volunteers helping out. The set up was cool. Tons to see. Obstacles, retail vendors (gloves, shoes, Spartan gear, energy drinks, etc.), food vendors, drink vendors and photo opportunies. Bag checks are available for $5. Locker vendors are available, same vendor we saw at The Color Run recently. Port-O-Potties are available for bathrooms. You arrive to the race, pay for parking, register, walk around and check everything out, then get your butt to the start line at your designated start time. The obstacles are crazy crazy crazy!!!! Some harder than others, but they definitely challenge you. Anything to make you work for it. We went up this steep hill in the very beginning, went under muddy freezing water at the Dunk Wall on the 8th obstacle, we were soaking wet and cold for the rest of the obstacles. The Sprint is 3-5 miles with 22 obstacles. My favorite obstacles are Herc Hoist, Dunk Wall, Slippery Wall, A-Cargo Frame, Fire Jump. My least favorites included Twister, Olympus, Multi-Rig, Rope Climb. The obstacles I've been training for and were actually good at were Monkey Bars and Z-Wall. Of course that wasn't on our Sprint Race. Spartan professional photographers are scattered throughout the obstacles. You'll most likely find them at the more popular obstacles like Dunk Wall, Bucket Brigade and Fire Jump. Get a team together and do a Spartan Race, because you can do it even if you think you can't. We had 11 people on our team and it was the best experience ever!!! And the 9 out of 11 teammates were newbies!!! The bond and and camaraderie you build is unlike anything else. You will even meet people you don't know who are out there racing and they will help you out, because that's what Spartans do. AMAZING!!! AROO, AROO, AROO!!!

It was close to a mile away so I got I ride over, but still nice to wake up after 5 to start a 6 am race! Beautiful and scenic drop into the valley. It was a fast course but wasn't too steep grade my quads were not killing me at the end or after. Just under 850 runners total, which was nice to run with some peaceful breaks with no one around you.. running through tropic, you had local folks out cheering and one guy setup a mist sprayer we ran through. Lots a aid stops and tons of little kids out helping. Thanks to all the volunteers!!! The only draw back was the one way to town where you finished was trafficked by police, luckily my family got ready after I started and got in line to come down to the finish... it took them 45 minutes to get there... I did run into them on the route, that was a treat... if they were any later they would have missed me at the finish. They did offer shuttles back to places runners were staying so you either work with the traffic shutting down a lane or just run and go back. Incredible views with the sun rising!

It's certainly a nice change of pace to get out and run between huge red rock formations as opposed to the ever-present city sidewalk running. The race runs from Ruby's Inn at the mouth of Bryce Canyon Park to the city park in Cannonville along Hwy 12. The pre-race expo is at the finish line in Cannonville the night before. There's also a 5k that runs around Cannonville at the finish line. The course can probably be broken down into three segments.... PART 1, DAWN START (MILES 0-5): The race starts at 6 am where you still have the dim lighting of the early morning which made the race feel cool, even though the temperature would reach 100 degrees this day. The first two miles are pretty flat along the highway and it's a pretty easy start. It doesn't feel that crowded, despite over 1000 runners in the race. Once you reach the two mile mark, you've reached both the prettiest and the easiest part of the course. There are the towering pillars of red rock here and the course goes into a steep down hill for the next three miles. And by steep, I mean cliff face-type drop. I'm convinced I could have just put on one of those flying squirrel-type suits and just base jumped from mile 2 to 5. It seemed like I'd just started when I passed the five mile marker. As an aside, I did like the cool iron mile markers that were attached to the side of the road. PART 2, THE FLATTENING (MILES 5-8): After the steep downhill, the course flattens out until you get to the city of Tropic. It actually makes this part feel a little hard after the steep downhill, although this is a pretty easy section. The nice part of running next to a canyon is that it blocked the direct sunlight for a while. I'd almost finished this section before the sun first came over the top of the hills. PART 3, ROAD TO CANNONVILLE (MILES 8-13): At the finish, people were complaining about this part of the course. The sun was out and it got hot quickly and the course is a little rolling here. I felt it actually moved reasonably quickly and there were some scenic farms along the way. The course was also well organized with eight water stops and shuttles going from the finish back to Ruby's Inn (as well as stopping in Tropic). I think getting a hotel at the start (near Bryce Canyon) is the way to do this although as an alternate, you could stay in Cannonville. Then you could walk to the expo and back to the hotel at the race. They had 4:30 am shuttles to the start from Cannoville also. A recommended half marathon.
