Note to self...even when you have a super nice hotel concierge who is clearly trying to be helpful, always trust Yelp.
I should have heeded the previous reviews before deciding to go to Zi'ntonio Mare.
Evening started off ok with the restaurant's courtesy car picking us up at the Hilton Palace. Evening continued to be ok when we reached the marina and saw the beautiful setting in which the restaurant was located. The foregoing account for the 1 star I am giving.
The waiter had little interest in explaining menu items or providing recommendations. I told him that I wanted some shellfish (mussels, clams, etc.) in a tomato broth. He kept pushing the fresh whitefish special. Finally said he could give me mussels and clams, with a little bit of whitefish, in a tomato based sauce. My wife ordered the gnocchi. We also ordered the zucchini flower appetizer and a half bottle of red wine.
The wine was delivered warm. The waiter explained this by waiving his hands around and saying that the wine is out and it gets warm. His suggestion was to put it in ice. So we did. Ok, fine.
The zucchini flowers were ok. Fried and filled with ricotta, they just lacked seasoning and taste.
My dish was brought out on a large metal platter. There were some clams and some mussels, all surrounding a whole whitefish in a butter-based sauce. I told the waiter that I didn't order a whole whitefish. His response was for me not to worry about it because he would debone the fish for me. I told him again that I didn't want an entire whitefish. He asked if I wanted just the clams and mussels, which I said was fine, so he went back, dumped the clams and mussels on to a plate and gave the bread plate sized portion to me. The shellfish was actually good, though was an appetizer-sized portion or smaller. The gnocchi were ok, though a bit gummy.
The kicker of all of this was that, when the bill arrived, they charged us €17 for the mussels/clams and added a cover charge of €2 per person. When we asked one of the other waiters what the cover charge was for, he said it was for the tablecloth (seriously?). The charge for an entire portion of mussels on the menu was €10, so we went to the front of the restaurant to speak with the manager. I'm not sure if she was the manager, but we spoke with a blonde woman sitting at the hostess area about the meal overcharge and cover charge. She kept trying to tell us that the bill was the bill. She finally acquiesced and changed the €17 to €10. They refused, however, to remove the €4 cover charge showing us that 3/4 of the way through the menu there was a line item for the charge.
Lesson learned, Yelp. I won't make this mistake again. read more
