Dinner Menu - apps and pizzas
    George D.

Went for a large business dinner - 17 people. We were seated at 6pm but the entire meal took over 3 hours. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Not too loud so easy to carry on a conversation. The service - although friendly - was painfully slow. It's a shame because the food was very good. The dishes that got the highest grades were the Margherita pizza, chicken parm and the mozzarella app. But, the service was so slow, it outweighed the food quality. I do not plan to return.

    Venison with risotto

Cute spot for a date night! I literally grew up around the corner from this spot and had never tried it until now. To start, the bread... omg. The bread. I could have just sat there and ate three plates of bread and had some wine and been satisfied. It's delicious. It's soft with a touch of salt, and they give you yummy oil to dip it in. I ordered a caesar salad which needed a little more dressing, but even after I added more, it still tasted bland. I just don't think the dressing itself had enough flavor, which is rare for caesar. For my entree, I had one of the specials which was a truffle fettuccine dish with shrimp. This I'd rate a 4. While it was good, I expected to be blown away considering this pasta dish was around $45. I think they mentioned they make their own pasta in house, but still... not quite sure it was worth the value. It also looked a little blah and could have used a little parsley or a veggie or something for some added color. I think there was ONE tiny micro-green. Ha. My husband ordered the venison, which was falling off the bone and flavorful. It was served with risotto which was also very good. As for service, it was a little lacking. Our server was nice but not very attentive. We often had to wave her down to come back to our table on several occasions. The restaurant didn't seem very busy considering it was a Friday night. We had a reservation and there was no wait when we arrived. Several tables were open. Overall, I'd probably rate this somewhere between a 4 and 4.5, mainly because the service could have been better. Price-wise, most of the dishes and drinks were quite reasonable. I think my dish was just a little over priced for what it was. I would love to come back for another date night and try a new dish!

    Chocolate Old Fashioned was amazing

Zini Cola isn't some off brand of Coke (like Faygo for the Juggalos), it's a higher end Italian restaurant which is delicious, but doesn't fit the Italian way of making sure you're stuffed silly. Their drink menu is amazing. The bartender came up with the craft cocktails and I'll say the Chocolate Old Fashioned was worth the price of admission. They also had a decent wine selection too. The menu was a decent size, but the portions were not. My Seafood Rigatoni was poorly named as I could barely see food on my plate. This is everything that pisses me off about "high end" Italian is that pasta is cheap, so load it up. Luckily, it was super delicious, so 4 stars instead of 3 for this place. We were here for a work dinner and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. The service was good (not great). I'm not sure I'd return as there are tons of other restaurants I'd try in Charlotte, but if you're in the mood for atmosphere, lite bites and good drinks, this would fit the bill.

Had a very nice Christmas Eve dinner here last minute as we were originally planning to be out of town. Food was delicious and server was very friendly. It was also beautifully decorated for Christmas.

    Is the patio heated?

NO, it's hardly a patio, just a few tables sitting outside the restaurant and on Ballantyne Village property.

Bottle opening fee if you bring your own wine?

HIGHLY DOUBT it, but they have a subpar wine list so by all means bring your OWN wine & corkscrew!

North Italia - NORTH ITALIA - CHARLOTTE

    North Italia

Review for North Italia…read more has absolutely become one of my staples in Charlotte.** It's located in the heart of South End--a trendy, energetic neighborhood with beautiful outdoor dining--and one of the biggest perks here is easy parking, which, as any Charlotte diner knows, is always a win. Inside, the restaurant is gorgeous. Think large, comfortable booths, warm lighting, fresh flowers, and a lively but polished atmosphere. I always make a reservation through OpenTable--I'm too old to be waiting around to eat, and I might as well rack up some points and perks while I'm at it. One of the things I appreciate most about North Italia is their seasonal menu. It keeps the experience fresh and thoughtful, and you can tell the kitchen is paying attention to ingredients and timing. I usually start with a glass of wine-- a sparkling rosé or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc--something cold, clean, and refreshing. Bubbles are always a good option for me. They serve a delicious focaccia at the table, which I sometimes indulge in, but the dish that truly stands out--the one I still dream about--was a seasonal ravioli with butternut squash and crispy sage. It was beautifully balanced, comforting, and memorable in the best way. Other favorites: * The Caesar salad--perfectly dressed * The arancini and calamari--always solid starters * The pizzas, especially the cacio e pepe * And yes, the desserts are absolutely worth saving room for Brunch here is also a lovely experience. Sitting on the patio, eating alfresco on a sunny Sunday, reminds me so much of what I loved about California--being outdoors, enjoying great food, and taking your time. Thankfully, there's plenty of shade, so it's comfortable even on warm days. They do offer a happy hour. It's not the most extensive in town, but it's perfectly fine for drinks, a pizza, or a charcuterie board with friends after work. What keeps me coming back: * Consistently good service * Clean, beautiful space * Thoughtful seasonal dishes * Easy parking * Reliable quality Yes, it's a bit upscale--but it's approachable, welcoming, and dependable. And when a chef takes the time to create seasonal dishes that appeal to diners with curious palates, that deserves recognition. Bottom line: A polished, reliable favorite in South End that delivers great food, beautiful ambiance, and a consistently enjoyable dining experience.

The waitstaff was excellent (we had Noah), service being spot on without being intrusive. While they do get on with business in order to turn the tables, they'll back off and slow down once they figure out your desires. Our waiter suggested the Stracciatella for an appetizer and we went for it ... it was not the famous Stracciatella soup many are used to, but fresh mozzarella cheese shreds with pistachio nuts on top and surrounded with a very light lemon zest-evoo sauce ... all served with toasted crostini. We had ours with the oven roasted tomatoes as accompaniment ... and this little dish was the 5-star hit of the night. The rest of the food was very good (we had Italian sausage filled ravioli and fettuccine al bruno pasta), and I was torn between 4 and 5 stars, but settled on 4. The food was 5 star stuff but they need someone bussing the tables, and they need to work on the music playlist. We really loved our 5-star Stracciatella, but spent the rest of the meal with those used plates staring at us. All during the meal they played diner music ... good music, but totally out of place in this Italian setting ... we needed some Frankie. All to say 4 star very good ... just needs a few fine touches to match the otherwise elegant experience.

Forgot to take photos of the bread because I was too busy enjoying it. Oops! We ordered meatballs as an app, and I had the lasagna for my entree. Both were pretty good, though I wish the lasagna had a bit more of a "noodle-y" bite to it, if that makes sense. I felt like I was just eating a bowl of cheese and sauce. The ratio of noodles to cheese and sauce didn't feel balanced, and felt more like lasagna soup, but overall, it was decent. I think I'd try something different next time. I moved here from up north 25 years ago and growing up I. The northeast sets the bar pretty high in terms of pizza. Portifino's is great. The sauce is sweet and portioned perfectly. The cheese is nice and salty, so you actually taste it. The toppings are flavorful, and again, well proportioned. My favorite is the Caprice which comes with tomato, fresh mozzarella, olive oil and fresh basil. It's amazing. The pasta dishes are excellent. I'd recommend the linguini with clam sauce and throw in some shrimp and broccoli for good measure. The Calzones are HUGE. I get mine with Mushroom, sausage, pepperoni and black olives. The But their subs are really what stands out. The chicken Philly has to be one of the best sandwiches in town. I could go on and on here because I've had almost everything on the menu here but no one has the time or attention spans for that. The service is excellent. It's a family run business and it FEELS like a family run business. They care about what they're doing. The person at the counter taking your order has a stake in your satisfaction. Don't get me wrong, we're not talking about Ritz Carlton Gold Standard. It's a pizza joint run by REAL people. But they're good people, and they actually care. That's better in so many ways. My best recommendation is to go get lunch with a friend, coworker, or even by yourself and sit in a booth by the window, watch the city do its thing and enjoy some real food made by real people. It's a great way to spend your 30 minute lunch.
