WOW! A well-deserved 5 star review for Ziggy's. We moved to Boston from California and were extremely disappointed to learn that the beloved family-owned donut shops with the paper bags and pink cardboard boxes that we grew up with are practically nonexistent in MA. We've tried SO many donut shops only to be met with Dunkin-like quality or obscenely trendy flavors. Well, we had some time to kill in Salem today and figured we'd give another donut shop a try. First, customer service was IMPECCABLE; the lady working the counter was extremely friendly and walked us through all our flavor options (I believe her name was Patty). We even had a nice conversation to go with our donuts. They have a great selection of flavors, but we decided on: Jimmies donut, chocolate glaze, boston cream pie, jelly filled, cinnamon, and apple cider. My favorite was the Jimmie donut; upon first bite, I was immediately reminded of the family donuts I loved throughout my childhood. All in all, I would highly recommend Ziggy's if you're looking for AUTHENTIC, delicious donuts; don't waste your time at any other donut shop! What a sweet place this is. Classic locally owned business. We walked by on the way back to to car, took a peek and was waved in by a local gent. The owner is super sweet. They have been in business 54 years. How many places do you know that can say this today. Not much left by the time we walked in to settled for an apple turnover. She was selling me on the moon pie but at the end didn't get one. Regret this now after reading the Yelp reviews. Turnover is good. Wish we had a microwave in the hotel room to warm it up. I had a mildly unpleasant experience here, but to be fair, the donuts are pretty good. I got a regular glazed and a jelly stuffed. Both were tasty, the donut was fluffy and fresh. This is a local shop, so bring cash if you can. I'm also a huge donut fan, and don't mind going out of my way to get a good donut. I moved to Beverly recently and when pulling up donut shops in the area, Ziggy's came out first, and then Coffee Time. I happen to be out running errands this morning and thought it was the perfect time to give this a try. When I walked in, I was a bit surprised at how the shop looked. It's small, and a bit dated, which normally wouldn't bother me so much. What did bother me was the experience. As soon as I opened the door, the conversation stopped and I was greeted with an unwelcome stare from a customer sitting at the bar. Not trying to be awkward, I said 'hi' but the lady behind the counter didn't say anything back...and the customer snickered a 'hi' instead. The donuts are kept in the back behind the counter which is a bit hard for me to see since it was my first time in the shop, I didn't know the flavors and couldn't seem to find the sign anywhere either. The lady behind the counter didn't offer to help with the donut options. Not knowing what there was, I just ordered what came to mind..."they must at least have a glazed and a jelly." All in all, she was nice enough but I didn't feel welcomed at all. This feels like one of those places where the same group comes in every morning for a donut and coffee, and unless you're one of them that come in every day, you're not a local and you're not welcomed. I left feeling frazzled...like I was in the wrong for being there....which was odd...since I was trying to find my new local shop. Guess this isn't it. We are so happy to see them back in Peabody! We've raved about and adored their donuts. The owners are wonderful people and we want them to succeed. But something has changed. Why are the donuts so thin and flat? It's like eating just the crust without the soft chewy middle. And you can't taste the flavor they used to be packed with. We usually buy a dozen just so we can have some the next morning. They always heated up really well in the air fryer. But now, they're so thin, they just dry out. It's like eating a breakfast pretzel. Cake donuts should have some cake in them. Their jelly donut is still great. Love their dough and filling. Please Ziggy, go back to the way you used to make them. We'll pay extra just to get the quality donut you used to make. We're looking forward to writing an updated stellar review! read more

Ok this place is everything you'd expect and more! Walk in, old school counter with some stools and the owner is hilarious! Super nice, chats you up, gives you some history and some funny stories! The coffee is good and the donuts are outstanding! If they have whoopie pies the day you visit, try them out! My daughter absolutely loves them! The locals are characters. Review for the Peabody location. This place is sad. The donuts are depressing. Small, thin, flat donuts. The donuts were laid out in crates like they were trucked in from another location. At 9am the donuts tasted stale, flat, and old. It's almost like there's no yeast in these donuts so they're flat and the hole is stretched out. The flavor of the plain was decent. Coffee is watered down and below average. So many better donut places out there. read more

I have no idea why it took me so long to check out Ziggy's - I even lived in Salem at one point and hadn't heard of them although it seems they've been around since the 70s. Kicking myself for missing out on such good doughnuts all these years! We went on a nice Sunday morning. Not too busy and there was parking right across from Ziggy's. They are off the beaten path and not in the downtown proper but this location actually seems great, especially if you want to get away from the crush of people. We were there around 11 and the selection I thought was still very good although the woman helping us kept apologizing for it. We ended up getting several doughnuts - an apple chunk special of the day and two jelly filled with lemon and black raspberry. We also got two strudel pieces ostensibly for my mother but uh legitimately forgot to put them in with her groceries that I was delivering so ate them so they wouldn't be wasted. Strudels were filled with blueberry and one with lemon. Fantastic. Very sweet and filling. The doughnuts were also amazing. You could tell they were homemade and made with love. Very light and fluffy and the flavors were just so yummy. Perfect size too. To top it off, we went with an iced coffee. They had several iced flavors. I tried the witch's brew and didn't get a hint of orange but loved the cinnamon and perfect balance with vanilla. So good! All of this for less than $15 which is amazing. Well, if you go to Ziggy's and are lucky enough to have Alice waiting on you Arlo Guthrie is sure to pop right into your head...apply that to donuts and you have a combo you can't miss. Ziggy's never misses. Potentially the smallest donut shop I have ever visited, it makes one of the most lasting impressions a donut fanatic could ask for. Ingredients, courtesy of Bake'n Joy Foods, North Andover Ma, are top quality and the only ones that Ziggy's will use. I called Bake'n Joy for an inside tour to see how the make the "Magic" but insurance won't allow it at this time. Never fear, I'll get in one day :) One taste of Ziggy's donuts and you will be hooked for life. The superior ingredients will spoil you for shops which use subpar dough and fillings; the Jelly donuts have real black raspberry jelly in them. The coffee is smooth, tasty and consistent. The selection if limited, cakes, honey dipped, lemon and Jelly; all standard, but the quality makes the hard to beat. Arrive early as they typically sell out before 10:00am. Also, if you become a regular or call ahead , the staff a Ziggy's will gladly package up your donuts before hand to make sure you have some waiting. Warning: You have to get here early (like... really early, like...by 9am) to obtain donuts because they can sell out quick-style depending on the morning. I live down the street and have to run by this shop on my morning jog and let me tell you, it's super inconvenient because it makes me want donuts - they smell amazing while they're frying 'em up between 6/7am. On the days that I talk myself into swinging in, I grab the cinnamon sugar, chocolate and plain donuts because they're my favorites - they freeze well, FYI. Stopped by Ziggy's (finally) on Friday morning at 7am. There was only one other person at the counter so I was glad to beat the morning rush. The woman behind the counter was friendly and created a wonderful assortment of donuts for me. I had a coffee as well which is just your typical diner coffee (I'll skip the sugar next time - too sweet. Especially with donuts). They had turnovers and whoopie pies too. I'll have to go back. My weakness is donuts! This place is the best because it is within walking distance from my bf's apt. If you are going to eat donuts than you should at least burn some calories by walking. I can't believe it has been there for years and I just now discovered them. This place is so authentically old school. They even sell cigarettes here! I came on a Tuesday morning around 10:30 am. There was enough donuts for a dozen (8.50). I would recommend the toasted coconut donut along with the lemon. The turnovers are pretty decent with the apple slightly better than the raspberry. The service was very sweet and you knew the donuts were made that day. read more

I moved to an apartment up the road from here, and finally stopped in last summer. My bf is obsessed. He gets up early every Sunday morning like a kid at Christmas and races down the street for 3 cinammon doughnuts and a large coffee. I think the moment he really fell in love though was when they had run out of cinammon ones on the shelf but offered to freshly coat some plain ones for him. I think the jelly and the chocolate frosted are pretty delicious as well. Everyone who works here is very nice and you can't beat the cheap prices. Closed on Saturdays though. read more

Coming to Ziggy's doughnuts we expected one thing: doughnuts. But there were none. Our options were very limited, and we got fruit and cream cheese filled pastries that were pretty good. We paid and continued on our walk through the neighborhood. Unfortunately we noticed the cream in our coffee was curdled and we had to throw it out. This review is kind of unfair merely because we have super high expectations for doughnuts, growing up on Kane's doughnuts in Saugus. I'd like to come back just to review their doughnuts but I'm not sure when/if they even make them. read more

This is one of the hidden gems of the north shore. They hand it these donuts and make them right there at the shop. Then they are tucked away into an old fashioned wooden and glass display case that must have been there since forever. They also have cakes and pies. The owners sister is one of the most wonderful and sincere people. It's a good chance you will see her working the front or filling donuts covered in a thin curl of powdered sugar with rosy cheeks. The family is close and wonderful and as real as the food they sell. It's worth every penny to come here instead of Dunkin'. Once you pull up and park in front of their little corner shop you will see yourself dropping by at least once a week. Homemade treats and a coffee to go from a family owned local establishment is as good as it gets. So happy I decided to wander over there on the way back from a doctors appointment. Ziggy and Sons Donuts is by far our favorite donut shop around. Every time we go in there, they make us feel at home... they are so friendly and can remember everyone's name and order! We recently got married, and had Ziggy's donuts as our "cake". The donut shop was closing for vacation, but came in and made donuts for us on the morning of our wedding. Danged near perfect. A true neighborhood joint - go there a few times and you're one of the regulars. I always make a point to get there at least once a week. Limited selection, but it's all terrific. The chocolate glazed donuts ease intensely of cocoa, the jelly donuts are the best you'll ever have,, and they make a great strudel. Coffee is very good, just your basic diner coffee but they keep it fresh. Prices are amazing. As all the other Yelpers say, get there early if you want a choice! Coffee Time is a better "bake shop" because of all the things they do well, but Ziggy's is a true specialist - they do donuts, and they lay the smack down on everybody else at that! read more

I ADORE this shop. We've started coming to Salem from NYC on long weekends and stay at the Hawthorne to be walkable to everything. And I highly, highly encourage you to take the lovely, 10 minute walk from the commons by the Hawthorne over to Ziggy's for amazing jelly filled donuts, glazed, cake, you name it. An update to my review for Ziggy's, my wife and I did a Doughn-off with Kane's. Kane's in Saugus, MA, is about 6 miles away from Ziggy's. According to someone at Ziggy's, they both use the same source for their dough. It's the preparation and cooking which the establishments can alter. They both bowl-mix and cut by hand. We decided to try a chocolate glazed and a cinnamon cake at each establishment. Ziggy's donuts are about half the price of Kane's and Kane's are about the double the size, almost all of that extra size coming in the width. We had slightly different impressions as to which baker made the best donut depending on the donut. Both establishments serve up a donut which has a marvelous crunch on the outside. The Kane's donut has more batter on the inside ratio compared to the surface area which provides the crunch. Given that each chocolate donut has a sugary glaze on it, the greater cake area on the inside of the Kane's donut allows for more of the chocolate flavor to come out. On the other hand, the Ziggy's donut ration, with more even surface to inside cake area, for both of us, is more of the ideal. With the cinnamon donuts, where the flavor and crunch on the outside, it's on that outside where most of the character to that donut lies. With the Kane's donut, there's too much cake area given the outside and again, the Ziggy's serves up a better balance in outside to inside ratio. There was one other area where they two establishments differed. Kane's merely sprinkled cinnamon on the outside, so the surface was more lightly granular. Ziggy's generously dusted the outside with a cinnamon-powdered sugar mix. Which way you like it is a matter of preference. Again, we liked the surface cake ratio of Ziggy's better. One other thing -- in two trips to Kane's, I noticed that the inside can vary from moist to dry in a somewhat inconsistent manner. Ziggy's donuts seem to have more consistency in that area. Perhaps it's because Kane's donuts are so much thicker that it's harder to keep the quality control on that aspect of the cooking. Again, there is a price difference. Kane's donuts are $1.25 each or $6.00 half-dozen. You can get a dozen of the Ziggy's donuts for that price. Yes, they're about 2/3rds smaller, but I also like that you can sample more of them. Frankly, one Kane's should probably be shared by two people. They are really too large for me. Again, that ratio may be preferred by others. In either case, both Ziggy's and Kane's are FAR better than your Dunkin' Donuts variety donut so you can't go wrong either way. I'll say different strokes for different folks, but eating too many of any of these will likely result in the same stroke, so eat in moderation, please. read more

The selection is limited, but this it NOT a problem. Everything they have for donuts and treats is perfect, freshly made, and delicious. When you go in, it's like being in grandma's cluttered kitchen, complete with pics of the grandkids on the refrigerator with magnets. There's even a Jesus on the fridge! Hey Nonna! There are about 6 stools at the coffee counter so if you were thinking of going in there with your laptop and balancing your books, think again. This is mostly a take out place. I don;t live near enough to make this a regular spot but was able to stop by on Sunday and grab a few items. I asked the sweet getnlement what the best sellers were and he noted Jelly was #1. ( Sorry, jelly isn't mine) Next he said a chocolat honey-dipped- works for me. I also had to try the traditional honey-dipped. I spied a yeasty reaised cinammon roll (with raising she noted) and took that for work the next day. These are the kind of places we are losing if we don't continue to support them with our business. I overheard the woman (likely the co-owner) calling regulars because she had bismarks that day.....who does that personalized service for what is likely a $2-4 sale? Loved hearing this! Its hard to decide between here and Coffee Time but I just loved the feel of this place. I'll settle this, go to Coffee time for Bizmarks and come here for donuts. And don't go to Dunks ever again for donuts. There were more than just donuts. I got a pastry. But it will be a nostalgic trip for some people! Not really easy to park here but its worth it. ziggy's has access to a secret ingredient called "magic." maybe you've heard of it. it's what keeps all their baked goods feeling/tasting fresh the next day, and it's what makes me actually want to eat donuts (which i'd prefer to spell "doughnuts" but am lazy). i gave up donuts awhile ago, but absolutely cannot resist them from ziggy's. everything they bake is great. nothing is slimy. i've even seen (read: eaten) a hot dog-shaped donut treat. around the holidays the sign says to place your order for bapka bread, much to the delight of "seinfeld" (and bapka bread) fans. the apple dumplings are a huge hit, too. how about i just read you the entire menu and go, "oh man, you have to try this" after every item? the best part about the good taste and the freshness and the slime-free factor? everyone here is super nice and clean. i know that the coffee makers are cleaned super regularly because the owner told me so. she wants to make sure the coffee tastes as good as can be. the place is totally a haven for regulars, but it's extremely welcoming, unlike some tiny local places can be. i love that family feeling. it's like a kind hug. here's the thing, though. the absolute best thing they offer is their whoopie pies (which they do on wednesdays). they're SO GOOD. both the cake and the frosting have a great flavor, and they're lighter than some whoopie pies i've had in the past. they even rival my aunt's whoopies. i can't believe i just said that. i know i already mentioned this, but ziggy's made a non-donut lover a donut enthusiast. that's powerful stuff. the streets are crazy around ziggy's, considering essex street changes one-way direction a couple times, but it's worth the slightly confusing trip. p.s. i had to come back and edit this review. i wrote "slim-free" instead of "slime-free." ah, the irony. read more

Very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the lemon cream paczki, which is a Polish donut with a rich cream inside. These must be ordered a day ahead, but the quality of the cream and the quality of the donut are absolutely outstanding! Can't wait to order again, and next time, I'm going to pick up a dozen donuts.
