Imagine hiring a contractor to improve your home, then discovering after the crew leaves that newly installed exterior doors cannot reliably lock, storm doors lack functioning handles or locks, and some entrances cannot be used normally. Now imagine realizing this while your child sleeps inside. Our project involved five exterior doors, four storm doors, James Hardie siding, and closing an exterior window. At one stage, three of four storm doors lacked essential operating hardware. We had to ask: Can we secure our home tonight? Could we use these doors during an emergency? Is our child safe? We could not postpone urgent corrections indefinitely while the owner blocked us, so on our own, we hired consultants to investigate the concerns and offer recommendations. The project was expected to be completed March 16-20, 2026, but remained unresolved months later. Hawkins continued demanding $9,577.20, which we disputed based on incomplete work, corrective costs, credits, reduced scope, and the undelivered door. I'd received various quotes for the job which all seemed too high, but Honest Abe's price was fair for the amount of work required. I was surprised that the job was done in only three days: One day for removing old siding, one day for putting up new siding, and a third day for painting. The quality of the work is very good. My HOA requires me to maintain the same look and colors of my neighbors. Honest Abe was able to match the paint without trouble, and now my walls look like new. There were some issues with electrical work while working on the siding. My detached garage has an outside sub-panel that they needed to move aside during the work. Also, at some point during construction, a nail apparently drove through an electrical line in my bedroom wall, knocking out service. Honest Abe paid for both of these repairs to be corrected, which I think is very honest indeed. All in all, I'm impressed with the craftsmanship of the workers, and the integrity of the company, and I must highly recommend them for any construction needs. It's like they have a roofing contractor script because most of the companies I looked at told me the same questionable story about getting my roof replaced. I don't know anything about roofing but some of the things I was told couldn't have been correct. I got a total of 5 bids and 3 of those I completely did not trust. Lots of weird games going on as I was getting bids. Marc at Peak was hands down the best to deal with. I actually feel bad because he was the fourth person I got a bid from and I was very guarded and skeptical. Marc was extremely straightforward and in my opinion very honest. He made it very easy. So easy I kept wondering what the catch was going to be. There wasn't one. The range in bid prices was stunning. Even with the same brand of shingles.
