My first impression as a "walk in" was positive, hair cut by owner, Zeus, but drastically changed by 2nd & further visits... would never recommend nor return! This guy has such an ego, even having been told that I had placed a glowing review for him after our first encounter, he pompously told me that he hadn't read it and didn't intend to, that they don't mean anything to him! Further, having gone to professional hair stylist for decades, he hit me with crazy rigid appointment rules. If you happen to run late by 5 minutes, you probably won't get his service and will be told off to boot! I checked and almost any Professional Barber allows 10 minutes leeway, as anything can happen to anyone to cause a little tardiness; hair stylist give 15 minutes. Across the board, this guy's bombastic demeanor and inflexibility reminds one of Seinfeld's ridiculous "soup nazi"! But, in real life, it's far from funny to go to be serviced and get demeaned and told how he's so good he has fired clients. I hope he finds out that it's not he that is doing us the favor! read more

Worse haircut ever! I am mortified. My summer is ruined. All of these thoughts and more have been going through my head since my abysmal experience at Zeus on Congress Ave (there's another location on 1st st). I typically get my haircut from an actual 'stylist' but had been wanting to go by this place for a time and show it some support since it had been written up in my neighborhoods monthly flyer. What a mistake. Let me tell you about this experience and you tell me where it went wrong. Wait, I know where it went wrong. When I didn't just turn around and get my ass out of there when I first walked in. So this place had been described as a barber shop akin to Floyd's or Bird's. Whoever made that connection has obviously not been to either of those well run and clean establishments. I walk into the very small entry to find it filled with little kids, a lady waiting on her husband, and some dude slouched down in a chair watching the tv. I'm like, so what do I do now? Until I make eye contact with this guy who never even says hi, but 'You here for someone?' No, just here for a haircut. Sullenly, 'A'ight (pause, pause, pause, cause he's watching one last thing on the tv) I can do it.' And he slowly peeled himself off the chair. THAT is when I should have turned it the F%$! around. He walks me back to the nasty corny where his chair is and scanning the room I get the immediate perception that all of the men in there got their cosmetology certificates at the state penitentiary. No kidding. Before I sit down this guy ask me what I want. I tell him just a short cut. Seems easy enough. 'A'ight.' I didn't face a mirror the entire time I got my haircut. I didn't know I was about to get my head SHAVED until I heard the thing come on and quickly go up the side of my head. HOLY F%$! I look in the mirror and literally say, 'Holy Crap!' His reply, 'Wha? You said you wanted it shote. It's a foe. You want me ta stop?' Really? Really?! Stop now?! There's a ditch going up the side of my head to the crown of it. I had no choice but to let him finish his assault on my integrity. As I sat there brooding I watched the other people getting cuts and it became very very clear that people do not come to this place to have their head cut with SCISSORS, but with a shaver. My 'barber' used his scissors once to cut a couple of fly aways. When the Sanduskying of my head was finished I took out a credit card and asked him how I could pay. 'Cash.' I didn't have cash and my card was in my hand. 'You don't have cash? Uh, yeah, we can take a card too.' What's going on here really? And then it was $15 before any tip!!! $15 dollars for that!! End of the day, don't go here unless you want to get your head shaved and there are a lot of cleaner, friendlier, and less expensive places to get that done. One positive thing I could say. Bottom line up front: Zeus' Barber is the shit! Not from this area, just needed a cut. I yelped places in the area, and at first was hesitant because the reviews ate this place up, but it was in route to my destination and convenient, so I thought fuck it. Went in got a seat right away. I asked for a medium skin fade, and surprise that's what he gave me. So the long wait time and failure to follow instructions are just disingenuous critiques. While Javier, worked into my fade I was treated to good conversation from real folk. If you have a dispute with the end product they are reasonable people and will consider your discretion, just talk and communicate, but don't take to yelp and fuck up a good business with poorly thought reviews... it's just not cool (but I guess you need haters to have appreciators). Plain and simple, this a real joint, with good people that speak their mind, and are just trying to have a good time. If you can't appreciate the authenticity of real barber shop vibes; if you want "professionalism (fake smiles and bs conversation about how your day is going, when truly know one cares)," go to Great Clips and get your hair fucked up. read more

Hispanic barber furthest from the door literally just fucked up my fade. One side has a average blended fade other looks like a cosmetology girl did it. And the fade all around is way to high. Nobody let him give you a fade. read more

I just got a haircut at the South First Street location, where Lara's was formerly located. It is the best haircut I have received in years. Mike Soto was my barber and he really did an excellent job. I spent 10 years in the military and know the difference between a good haircut and a bad one. I searched around Austin for a good barber for years, but it seems most of the places are corporate and use stylists with cosmetology licenses, rather than old school barbers. This became even more common in the last 20 years when most places stopped using straight razors and only used clippers. Heck, I can't even remember the last time I went to a barber shop and anyone knew how to use a straight razor. Or the last time I had a haircut from anyone who seemed to be doing anything other than a "job." All that changed today. Mike takes pride in his work and takes pride in being the best barber he can be. And I was definitely take on a trip down memory lane, when barbers employed lather machines, straight razors, precision and professionalism. I'm definitely going back and would recommend this barber to anyone who wants to have the same old-school barbershop experience that you just can't seem to find anymore. read more

Horrible Experience, the barber at the second chair after the door with the ugliest style and dirty and beat Retro 11 Jordan's, messed up my hair and clearly cannot follow directions, told him EXACTLY what I wanted and did not execute correctly, I asked for a trim and he cut my hair way too short, during my haircut process he stopped and walked out the shop to meet some guy that pulled up in a truck. The haircut took over an hour and was totally not worth it, not once did he turn me to the mirror to see how the haircut was going so I could not correct him on my hair, definitely not worth the $25, especially not worth a tip. On the eve of growing out my beard in the spirit of Billy Gibbons, I wanted to find a hot towel straight razor shave as a sendoff. I'd been to a number of local barber shops, including one of my favorites on S. Congress, and was surprised to learn how few places offer such a service, any more. However, place after place recommended Zeus, which happened to be down the road from where I'm living. Right away, I felt at ease with Mike, who did a very nice job with what is, obviously, a very sensitive operation. Not only did I get a terrific shave (smooth as a baby's butt), with no nicks, but I felt initiated into a world that safety razors had let me pass by. I'm not one for haircuts, usually wearing my hair long and braided, when it's not growing out from my shaving my head, so I can't speak to that side of things at Zeus, but every man owes it to himself to, at least once, treat himself to a traditional straight razor shave and, at Zeus, you'll be in good hands. read more

This was the first barber shop I chose to try when I moved to Austin last year and within the first 2 minutes I knew this was my new spot. As soon as I walked in they greeted me and asked if I had an appointment or was a walk-in. "Walk-in" I responded and this barber named Albert said he could get me immediately. Now I am very serious when I comes to cutting my hair because it is thick with cowlicks in a few spots. To say I was nervous is an understatement. However Albert was very nice and very inquisitive on how I would like my hair cut. I told him how I wanted it, he cut it almost perfect and then I gave him some more directions on how to perfect it which he did flawlessly. A very personable individual as well as a great environment where you don't have to feel like a stranger, Zeus Barber Shop is the place to go in Austin for your hair cutting needs.
