I loved Zen Spot when I first started going. The classes were great and I always felt like I was being challenged (and they always include an ab workout, which is awesome). But there are a few things that have turned me away from this studio, despite it being the only non-bikram hot yoga studio in eugene. First, their staff can be rude and off-putting. Though she teaches a great class, there is one instructor (brown curly hair) who often scolds or talks down to you in front of the class when your form is incorrect. In a setting where we're supposed to feel unselfconscious and confident in ourselves, this makes it very difficult. I'm also disgusted by the pricing here. I'm a college student, so I don't have a lot of extra money to spend, but I care about my body and will pay for yoga as much as I can afford. But Zen Spot is just too much money. A 5-class package is $70, and it expires in 25 days. I want to be able to come to class when I want, not feel pressured by a window of time. They are also the only studio I've ever been to that doesn't offer a student discount. The other thing is that this studio can be EXTREMELY crowded. They never cap the number of students and there have been times when I can't even do the poses because there isn't enough space around me. If Zen Spot is making as much money off of their customers as it seems, they should be able to expand their facilities, offer better package options, and get some new instructors. Hopefully someone opens another hot yoga studio in eugene, because they'd make a killing. Until then, I'll have to do without. read more

The best place to practice yoga in town!! The owners are wonderful, both so supportive and motivating. Both Kelli and Michael take extra time for each one of their students to learn about them so they can help guide them in their practice. I have had 7 surgeries, and have physical limitations that both Kelli and Michael are aware of. Both of them have taken time to help me modify & have helped me work through some physical limitations. Since I began in January of this year I have noticed amazing weight loss, toning, improvement in my immune system, and an overall increase of balance in my life. I have been able to push myself in ways I never could have the last 10 years. The studio is kept clean, there is free parking, and prices are super reasonable! There is a range of class times, so I am able to fit it into my full time (plus lots of overtime) work & full time mom schedule. read more

I love ZenSpot! I only went for a week due to time constraints, but definitely enjoyed my experience there. I've been practicing hot yoga for a year now (and yoga for longer) and really appreciated the more fast paced atmosphere-forced me to push myself to my limits! I read yelp reviews before going and the negative ones really made me nervous... but, I was very happy to experience the complete opposite of what the reviews claimed. If you are looking for a non judgmental place, especially if you're a beginner. This is the place for you! I went to a class this weekend and loved the experience and how open the instructors were. Not having a lot of experience myself, the last 30 minutes of class I had to stop and just sit. Even after class the instructors welcomed me back with open arms. Great all around experience! If I had to say anything that I didn't like is that it was really packed. Lots of people, for myself it's not something I'm use to. I started practicing yoga about 7 years ago at a Bikram's studio and continued when I moved to Eugene. While I enjoyed that, I began wanting a little variety and movement in my practice. At Zen Spot, that is exactly what I received. The variety of instructors provides something for everyone, and you might be listening to funk one day and traditional meditation music the next. I love it! The instructors have also been incredibly accommodating and helpful to me as my body has changed. (I'm pregnant.) They offer blocks and adjustments to poses, and if I'm ever unsure, I just glance in their direction and help is provided. Every instructor I've ever had there has been that way. I read a review below about the owners/management not being very friendly, and I have had a much different experience. While I'm sure that its entirely possible that anyone there could be having a grumpy day (we all do), I would say without hesitation that the people who work there are quite pleasant and friendly. Indeed, I am writing this review because I just had one such interaction with Dr. Kelli and wanted to share my positive feelings about the studio. I love this place and have been coming for years now. The staff is wonderful and the workouts are intense! The energize classes wake me up and the destress classes leave me feeling like jelly. I really loved practicing hot yoga here at first but a number of occurrences have made me not want to spend any money here. First, I loved a hot yoga option in town with a varied class sequence, and the music was awesome. Issues: not having the instructor listed on the schedule. If I am paying for classes (expensive here!) I want to be able to decide if I'm going to a class taught by an experienced teacher that I connect with or by a teacher in training who is practice teaching and still working on sequencing, flow, and cueing. In my opinion, a class taught by a teacher still in training should be discounted or even free. What really ticked me off here was an interaction with the owner/instructor. Even after II told her that I worked at a different studio and loved it, she proceeded to bad mouth the practice, the price, and the culture. I felt like I had to defend myself. Very unprofessional and rude. It's tough because I loved how I felt after class and I enjoyed most classes very much! But the weird vibes with the owners make me not want to give them any of my money. Bummer. read more

Rude. I've been to ZenSpot's hot yoga a few times, plus many more hot yoga experiences out of state, and they were great. However, last week I attended a hot yoga class that consisted of bright lights, club-like music, and was fast paced. When I spoke to one of the owners to see if I could receive a staff schedule, to see if another instructor would teach yoga how it should be...dim lights, soft music, and a pace for hot yoga that wouldn't get me injured...he rudely asked me, "Who is this?" as if I had no right to ask such a question. Other yoga studios have that information already listed. He then continued to explain how their hot yoga is not consistent, changes from instructor to instructor, and how one instructor may even change their methods midweek (all while laughing sarcastically at me). Way to go ZenSpot and co-owner Michael! Treat all customers this way and you may find yourself out of business before the year end! read more

For anyone with a membership to Zen Spot or planning on getting one, they have proven to be greedy and petty. After being a member there for over a year, their class started making me sick (vomiting, shaking) etc. It turns out I was in my first trimester of pregnancy. All of the books I read told me to avoid excessive heat-so I called in October ( before leaving town for a few weeks) to talk to them about cancelling my membership. I didn't actually get ahold of anyone to cancel until November 7th (two days after my billing cycle). Despite giving them 28 days notice, as the class was making me sick, they refused to forgive the contract. They charged me for two months I wasn't even able to use their services. They said if I didn't pay the last month on my contract, they would send me to collections and my bill would double. I understand the need to have contracts because people do abuse the system. But their class was making me sick. It is disappointing that they reacted this way. To be fair, Zen spot does offer a great place to do yoga. Just be sure that you don't become pregnant, seriously ill, or get injured in the process of having a membership there. In my experience, they are very rigid and do not make exceptions to their contracts even if you have health issues preventing you from taking class. read more

I love Zen Spot. I've been coming here for over two years. I think the monthly rate is very reasonable, especially if you opt for automatic withdraw - less than $100 per month unlimited. It's worth the price if you are an avid yogi. I like Zen Spot better than Bikram because the instructors vary the routine and the studio doesn't smell. The founders Michael and Kelli are hilarious and fun. I love that they remember my name. The studio also offer a wonderful instructors training, which I hope to join next summer. Love Zen Spot! I got a trial month this summer and it made my time in Eugene so much better. Unfortunately we had to move out of town due to family reasons, but I really wish I was still able to practice there. Sandra, the current owner, is pretty rad and her classes are awesome. Of course, there are always teachers that are a better fit for some, but they all pretty good. Saw a negative review about bad staff, totally disagree. Everyone was even VERY nice and personable. I've practiced yoga for over 10 years all over the US and Zen Spot is on top of my list for hot yoga. Will always go back when I'm in Eugene. read more

I've been practicing at ZenSpot for nearly 2 years. The owners and instructors are wonderful and friendly! They make an effort to get to know you, and really care about helping you advance your practice, heal your injuries and generally become stronger and healthier overall. They offer modifications for beginners, as well as some advanced modifications for those who feel adventurous, or who have been practicing for a while. The pricing is competitive, and you can use your member ship at both the Eugene and Portland studios (really convenient if you travel like I do! :)). I have previously tried hot yoga at a different studio and really enjoy the variety and the attitudes of the instructors and owners at ZenSpot. Yoga at ZenSpot makes me a stronger and happier person, and I cannot recommend it enough! Give it a try! read more

I initially purchased a Groupon to try out ZenSpot and my first impression was quite favorable. I then bought a package... but life got a little crazy and I did not return to the studio for six months. Upon returning, I was very pleased to learn the studio would still honor my purchase and I would like to think I'm getting back in a groove with hot yoga! (Thanks, ZenSpot!) I would imagine that first-time yogis might be a little intimidated by classes at this studio. The sessions are well-sequenced with some variation and quite challenging, even for someone who has practiced on and off for a ten years. A good basic knowledge of yoga poses would be must prior to attending classes as the focus truly is on the individual's practice-- pose-specific coaching, redirecting or hands-on repositioning don't seem to be methods overly used in this studio. (That's an observation, not a judgement.) I find hot yoga at ZenSpot to satisfy my workout cravings when I need a break from the constant pounding of running, lifting, cycling and swimming. I definitely recommend ZenSpot to friends-- I always leave feeling stretchy, strong and focused! read more

I went to the class today. I haven't been this embarrassed in ages. It was my first time trying hot yoga and well, it got the better of me. I needed to leave but all the doors were locked, making me go in and out twice. I get it, it's hot yoga and you want to keep the heat in, but I almost passed out and the instructor was so rude. I am 27 years old and I felt like a child. I literally left without my shoes and ID. I have to go back tomorrow to get it, I'm hoping they didn't destroy them. I will never go there again. read more

This place takes advantage of people, they charge extremely high prices and if you can't afford it they offer no form of help. If your going to run a place that is meant to help people in pain then you should be more understanding. They all have horrible attitudes as well, no one that works their cares about the yogi philosophy making it a terrible place to learn. The teachers are also completely random so you never know if your gonna get the lazy older ones or the super hyper younger ones making getting a consistent workout or benefit from there class almost impossible. Lastly the place is run by two people that only care about money and since they also run one in Portland you can tell they don't care about this location and treat it like that, offering only 2 classes on some days. I love hot yoga but unless you wanna get bombarded by bad attitudes and lose a months paycheck I'd steer clear of this one! read more

I give this company 0 stars. I have never done hot yoga before and my boyfriend had gone to this company 1 time 5 years ago and said it was a nice facility. There was a groupon for this place so I bought one for myself and one for him as a gift so we could do it together. We would both have 10 sessions with this groupon. We go in there and the owner refused to let us use our coupons because my boyfriend had gone there 1 time 5 years ago and this coupon is only for new customers. We explained to the owner that we didn't realize that we couldn't use the coupon if he had been there before. We pleaded with him and asked him if there was a way to use some of the coupon since I paid 80 dollars toward zenspot. We both go to school and have a limited budget and I purchased these to better our health. He refused and said there was no way for him to accommodate us. I could not believe the lack of compassion and arrogance from this guy. I don't know how a guy like him stays in business in Eugene where most people are friendly and apart of a community. He was so rude and just told us to leave and call groupon. I would never recommend this place to anyone! read more

This studio is not for those who want the inner experience of yoga- or for those who want a community feel, or for those desiring a safe and supportive environment where your injuries are accommodated, or modifications for different levels, or respectful owners ( I have spoken face to face with instructors who quietly tell me about mistreatment by owners). It is expensive, and I do not appreciate the two owners using the Dr. title in front of their names when neither has a medical degree. (one has an advanced degree in education). There are other studios in Eugene that offer what this studio is missing... although they won't offer hot yoga.... read more

The ZenSpot approach to yoga appears to be based entirely on conformity, uniformity and endless repetition. The teachers are given a "script" which they must follow, and they repeat the same instructions over and over again, as if the students are not intelligent enough to remember what to do from one pose to the next. I do not need to be told how to get from upward dog to downward dog each and every time! If a student begins to move before the instructions are given, the teacher will reprimand that student and insist they "conform" to his/her pace and verbal commands. The students face the mirror, while the teacher paces back and forth in the back of the room. There is no personal interaction with the class, nor are there any hands-on adjustments. I could have had the same experience doing yoga to a DVD in my living room. The real clincher, what made my ZenSpot class extremely distasteful and unsatisfying, was Savasana, or the final relaxation. There was nothing relaxing about it. After getting us to lie down on our backs in preparation for savasana, the teacher left the room, allowing a strong blast of cold air to enter the room. She then told us we could lay there as long as we liked, but a few people got up almost right away and began to spray their mats with the disinfectant spray provided by the studio, directly next to my mat where I was trying to be calm and peaceful and serene. There was no thought that maybe I didn't want to inhale the fumes of the disinfectant, or that the moving and putzing around was disturbing to my restful state. Savasana is a sacred time, and it is the last pose of any yoga practice. It is generally done as a group, after which the teacher gently reawakens the group so everyone can finish together and with a sense of commonality, the completion of a shared experience. But at ZenSpot, there is no attempt to create a communal feeling. The individual teachers are not listed on the schedule, and when I asked why, the person at the desk said the owners want it that way. They don't want one teacher to get more of a following that any other. They don't want one teacher to become more popular than any other. They want their teachers and their classes to be interchangeable, predictable, and uniform, like a McDonalds hamburger will always be the same, no matter where you go. I truly believe ZenSpot is the antithesis of what Yoga is and can be. I will never go there again and I will warn anyone who is considering taking a class there to avoid it. read more

I went to this studio one time (paid $17 for one class) with a friend and liked it as it was my first hot yoga class ever. I was unsure about buying a membership because it was so expensive. I noticed the next week that they were advertising a groupon so I purchased the groupon and thought this would be a good way to see if I liked the classes they offered and if the schedule worked with mine. There were limited class times, so I was unsure if I could make it work seeing I work full time. When coming in to use the groupon the manager acted rude that I had a coupon and they proceeded to tell me that groupons are only for new students. I told her that I was new, I did not have a membership. She argued with me and said sorry I cant help you. She was unwilling to work with me at all. They would not make any effort to have me as a customer and were unbelievably rude. Needless to say, I will make sure that I tell everyone I know NEVER to go to this overpriced studio where they are only wanting your money. Running a business is a lot of work and you would think that they would want to build their clientele. You lost me as a customer and all my friends and family, and most likely the people that read all your terrible reviews. read more

This is a workout class disguised as yoga. The instructors encourage the students to go into postures without the correct instruction or posture sequence. They lead way to many heart-openers and back-bends without the proper back warm-ups or complementary postures, following their prompts will hurt your back, esp in a hot room where one is inclined to push themselves harder. I have practiced in numerous studios and done many styles of hot and normal yoga; I have years of experience and a solid practice on which to base my criticism of ZenYoga. The feel of the studio is deceptive and initially I was excited to find a studio that did fitness oriented yoga, but the instructors at this studio do not pay attention to breath or proper form and they do not understand body mechanics; I will not return and do not suggest that new yogis practice here as they could hurt themselves by listening to the teachers. This place is great! On my first day the previous owners, Kelli and Michael welcomed me with open arms. 4 years later Sondra now runs the studio and it is doing better than ever! On my first day, the series was fluid and strong and when I left I felt like I got a work out and work in. This place had become my home away from home and my rock. I had the a similar experience as some, in that the guy owner humiliated me by holding up beginning the class so he could tell me he wouldn't accept the Groupon that I gave him, because I went once before, when they first opened, years ago, but that I could give him $40. more, toward a 5-class package. I did not see the small print on the sign on the desk that said I had to use the 5-class package within 28 days, nor did he point out this rule, but eagerly accepted my money. I didn't want to hold up the class any longer, so paid-- in essense, $70. for the one yoga class, because when I went in for next class, 28 days later, the brown curly-haired lady at the desk would not let me use the pass--it had expired. On the positive side, this studio is clean. One instructor (also studio owner) was average, participated in the class demonstrating some poses, and spoke to me by name. The next class instructor was poor to the point of being disrespectful and rude. I don't want to take instruction from anyone who is not proficient in his/her own yoga practice. This studio refuses to post a schedule of who is teaching so I would have to go out of my way to call ahead in order to avoid this teacher... Initially, I loved taking classes at ZenSpot. Doing Bikram yoga had given me a bad feeling about hot yoga classes because of their rigid and emotionless sequence and teacher to student "interaction". Keeping this in mind, I loved ZenSpot in comparison to Bikram because of Kelli and Michael's often humorous and seemingly lighthearted approach to creating a sequence and interacting with students. However, having practiced a variety of yoga styles and a variety of studios all over the place, I am saddened by the underlying vibe of greed and rigidity that the owners base all of their decisions on. I used ZenSpot for about 6 months pretty religiously and really enjoyed the heat and the varied sequences, yet, 2011 proved to be a hard year for me financially and I had to cancel my membership. Last March, I was delighted to see a Living Social deal for 10 classes for something like $30. Even though I have gotten used to pinching pennies, I got so excited that I bought it on the spot. A little while later, upon trying to redeem the deal which I already bought, I was told to check the details on the deal stating that this only applied to new clientele. Upset, I asked if I could still use it, as I was just so excited to come back to the studio and hadn't noticed the redemption rules. I was told that this wasn't possible but that I could use the measly $30 toward an entire full price package which is definitely out of my price range. Lastly, I asked if I could give it to a friend who had never been to the studio. I was told that only the purchaser could redeem it. This is a little insane. I'm sorry ZenSpot. You have a lot of what it takes, but you're missing key things in order to create a true following. Strive to be better than just a Bikram alternative. I had really hoped that you would be. read more
