She had no problem handling the rules of the house in that regard. Also, our dog is a rescue - he was neglected and abused before we came across him, so he doesn't trust people readily. She was not intimidated at all and, although he was a bit wary at first, she soon buttered him up. In addition to being clear about who was the alpha, she gave him great rub-downs - after years of neglect, he really needs a lot of affection in order to trust people. She clearly had a natural grasp of canine hierarchy and dog mentality and once she got him to trust her, she even started to offer him some obedience training.
