Ok, so my review on Zen-Cookie is intended solely to inform the reader about this nail salon as this was neither a good nor bad experience for me. It was just..okay. Realistically, this is a very outdated and quite possibly the smallest nail spot I've ever been to. Both the waiting and pedicure chairs are slightly uncomfortable after sitting in them for a while and I'm not certain if the pedicure chair had massage functionalities either. The prices are also very up there for a place that only has about 6 pedi chairs,2 mani stations and a very limited variety of colors. However, my nail tech was very quick to greet me, offer me and the fiancé something to drink, and help me pick out a color. I originally picked out a glossy bright Ferrari type red for my pedicure but after asking her if it would be applied as shellac she directed me to a different but very similar shade of red so I rolled with it. We engaged in some conversation and she was really nice and gentle through out the whole entire process. Absolutely no complaints on her end. Now, the reason for me rating so highly is because I truly feel I picked the wrong shade of red. A mistake on my part. :( As she finished, I couldn't help but be disappointed on the finish of my nails. They're not bad but not really what I wanted. I received a matte red pedicure instead of a pearlescent gloss red that I hoped for. Could have been my fault for not double checking. In conclusion, I will be keeping the color since I paid 37 dollars for it and keeping high hopes that it will not chip on me so soon. read more

I have lived in this area for 6 months now and have passed this little blue shop up every time for a more fancier looking nail shop and let me just say- you really can't judge a book by its cover. There's a Starbucks in the front so you really can't miss it. Upon walking in, I was immediately greeted by the owner, Brenda, and she made sure to address all my concerns with my previous experience from a different salon. Tried this place out because 1. It's in the neighborhood, and 2. 'Zen cookie' just sounds like such a cute name The place has that heights vibe, which I can dig. We're those people that love going to the nail salon every two weeks lol I'm extremely picky when it comes to my nails and choosing my color, so I was really disappointed when my mani and pedi color did not match, after being assured they were matching colors. I've been to zen cookie nails a few times. The last time I went I noticed change in ownership and quality had gone down. So I hadn't gone back in months. Yesterday I was in need of a pedi and decided to give it another chance. Its only a few mins walk from my house. Can't beat the convenience. Upon arriving, I noticed yet another change in ownership. I requested shellac pedi and mani. Karla who did my pedi took her time and checked in with me to make sure I was okay. Anne (older lady with glasses) did my mani. She was done in half the time my pedi took and engaged in no conversation. No asking my preference in shape, no apologies for being rough. The first 3 fingers she worked on ended up bleeding and are still sore today (the next day). I've had one accident on one fingernail before from another salon. It was a slip of hand and she apologized profusely. This time the lady was just being rough since I had 3 fingers that had bleeding and soreness after. Completely unacceptable and unnecessary. I was a repeat customer before due to decent quality and convenience. For 85 dollars (shellac mani pedi and 15 % tip) I can go just about anywhere else inside the loop. Sad to see a neighborhood spot go downhill. But can't recommend to anyone.. read more

I visited Zen cookie shortly after the new ownership took over. After being a loyal customer for over 2 years I was really hoping to continue my relationship here with the new staff/owners. The previous owner, Kacey, was amazing; her and her staff always provided the best service and made you feel like family. I have to say, I had a great personal vibe when visiting zen cookie under the new regime. Everyone was VERY friendly. One of the workers talked to me the ENTIRE time I was getting my nails done. So I didn't have time to notice that my shellac manicure left my nails all pointing to either the left or right. I got home and my husband thought that I had done my own nails. Not cool for $42.00. I mean at minimum you're going to keep the shellac on for 2 weeks if you paid $42 . Luckily, I own a nail file and could correct the problem and the shellac didn't last over a week. I know I should probably give them another chance, but my friend continues to go there and only allows one person to do her nails because this one person can do them well. I'm not about that life. First time and it won't be my last! I got a zen-cookie pedi, which is a typical pedicure that trims, buffs, and files. Great job with the polish! I also got dipped nails for the first time. The outcome was very upscale looking nails. The place is cute with comfy seats and HGTV playing on TV. All the girls are super sweet and personable and take their time to get great results. New ownership- not the same quality or atmosphere. After being a frequent customer for over 2 years I've found a new place. Updated based on the comment from the owner: The last time I went was October. To my knowledge, you did not have a rewards system put into place at that point. I did not want to write a review initially since taking over a new business comes with struggles. Multiple friends have gone since the new ownership and have not been happy with the quality. One friend, who was a frequent visitor with me, was asked by her husband if she tried to do her nails herself after leaving your establishment. The lady used an electric drill to file off my existing dip polish but continued to file onto my real nail causing pain. Nails are less than a week old and they ALL are already chipping. I usually get Shellac Manicures at another place, but had a stressful day and I wanted a basic manicure and always wanted to try this cute little place out. When walking in, it's cozy and quiet. Not fancy, but very cozy and relaxing. You forget you are on Washington Ave. The lady informs me that a pedicure and manicure combo would be 25% off. How can I resist? I also thought this would be good so I can compare and see how both the manicures and pedicures are. I feel so good. I was given a warm pillow for my neck, which was just the cherry on the top. This little place isn't swamped and crowded with a dozen workers working on various customers, either. It was just me and another customer getting one-on-one service. I'm so loyal to Nail T*me on W. Love this place! Natalie, Pauline, Katie... everyone! Honestly these girls have the best work ethic ever. They give long, deep, great quality massages with even the most basic mani/pedis. They offer drinks, neck warmers, have a tv and are great about sending the amount you want to chit chat. I'm not a big small talker so once they know I feel comfortable and welcome they don't force a conversation about boyfriends and all that. Back to the work ethic- you don't have to tell them when there's a nick or indentation or any imperfection bc they will be looking for them and fixing them no matter what it takes. I had my first manicure about ten years ago. This was my second. This was my first pedicure. Obviously I don't have a ton to compare the experience to, but I will do my best. This place is located in a small, converted bungalow. I have driven past it a million times and have never noticed in before. Upon entering we were asked to sit in the waiting area for a few minutes. Soon thereafter we were seated in a side room. The chairs were huge! They looked like big leather thrones with an attached foot bath. I was handed a remote for the built in massager but I decided against this. I get my fill of chair massages when I visit Brookstone. The lady then came in and went to work on my feet. She soaked my feet, and then she trimmed the nails. After that it was more soaking and then a hot stone massage and a scrub on my legs. My feet are super ticklish and she only tickled them once. The whole thing felt amazing. I have been missing out on this whole pedicure thing. No wonder women keep this to themselves. It is way more than a little clip and a coat of paint. After that was the manicure, and since this was my second one ever I now have a sample size of two for my comparisons. The last time I had it done it hurt when they pushed down my cuticles. That was not the case this time as the lady was very gentle. The whole thing was around $35. It was $15 for the manicure and $20 for the pedicure. Considering I was being pampered for an hour and a half I would say it was totally worth money. I know I will be back. read more

This place is a dump. I went into it with an open mind based on the good reviews, but came out very disappointed. First of all, this place is every bit as expensive as the nice nail salons and totally not worth it. I'm not a salon snob, but if it's the same price at a ratty trailer as it is in an actual SPA environment, the choice is clear. The elderly woman who did my pedicure did a wonderful job. The middle aged woman who did my shellac manicure was rude, and was visibly aggravated that I took more than 30 seconds to choose my nail color. Then she did a crummy job- the color is splotchy and uneven, she got the shellac up on my cuticles (which makes the polish peel off way faster, so I already know my manicure won't last long, and she filed my nails so unevenly that the tips look almost like she made them purposefully wavy. Awful. Awful awful awful. Save your money and go to a real salon read more

I can only review the waxing services. I came in today for a Brazilian wax, and was honestly horrified by my experience. Firstly, the lady put talcum powder on my groin area and rubbed it in WITH HER BARE HANDS. When I seemed astonished and asked her if she was going to use gloves, she seemed confused but went and got some (honestly, it's as much for her protection as mine, and really gross she didn't start out with gloves). Then I realized early on she was double and triple dipping the stick in the wax, contaminating the wax for others (and more than likely, I was using someone else's wax). That's when I asked to terminate the session early for only a bikini instead of full Brazilian wax. The waxing process itself was fine except no attention to detail was noted-- the stray hairs the wax left stayed there-- she made no attempt to tweeze them later which is pretty standard. Then she gave me a towel to clean up with which she took out of the room, however did not change the towel that my head and feet were laying on. Overall, I'm really grossed out by my experience here and will NEVER be coming back even though I live less than 2 min away. I would also strongly recommend anyone who cares about not contracting gross things stay away from their waxing parlor as well. If I get herpes now, I'm definitely gonna blame it on this. read more

Recieved a mediocre pedicure on a Sunday afternoon. The nail polish was clearly uneven and she rushed through the whole thing. I asked her to make sure she got my heels because she brushed over it once or twice and it didn't do much. Well, that didn't happen. I was ignored and ignored and told to wait 5 minutes to get a manicure which turned into 20 and no one said anything, I paid for my pedicure and left. Their regular customers seem to get amazing service though. I might try them again and just avoid the woman who did my pedicure because its awful. I was looking for a place to get a shellac manicure for my daughter so I read several reviews for a few salons. The first place I stopped had over an hour wait. The second place was 45min. Then I called this salon and they told me to come right over. Cute little place! I got a mani/pedi, my 13yo got a shellac mani and a regular polish change on her toes, and my 6yo got her finger & toe nails polished. Cookie, Zen & Kim were AWESOME!! They were hilarious and so patient with my daughters. They treated them just as respectfully as they did me, even when my 6yo was indecisive about her color choices. They even filled the foot tub for her because she "wanted water like mommy". Each patron who showed up while I was there was greeted by name. As was I when I arrived. I will certainly be returning! I am very particular about where I get my shellac...I usually only go to 2 places in Houston and go to a specific person. My roommate told me she went to Zen and really liked it and it's down the street from us so I decided to give it a try. I requested Natalie and she really did a great job. Don't expect s great atmosphere...but they do serve coke/wine/water which is unusual at cheaper salons. Shellac is $30 if they have to take off your previous shellac and $25 if you have bare nails. The salon is not by any means nice and they actually had the doors open to cool off the inside...but they do a good job and it's reasonably priced. Ask for Natalie! read more

The quality of work did not disappoint. I typically get ingrown on my toes and as a nurse who wears a lot of closed toed shoes, it can be a burden.
