I was in town for a conference and craving Asian food. Where do I go for a recommendation? Yelp, of course! Although the food wasn't world-class, I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of food I was able to get down by the lake. We started out with pretty high expectations after seeing the rare five-star Yelp rating. After a quick call to confirm veggie options (which do exist--you can leave meat out or substitute tofu), we drove over. When we arrived, our hopes plummeted. The restaurant is a small, off-white building with a red roof and trim. There's not much around, and we immediately felt out of place. However, having no other options and seeing a few others had very good experiences here, we walked in. And it got better! The interior was small but inviting, and we were quickly greeted by our server, Hunter. Overall, the restaurant was reasonably priced and the staff was very accommodating to substitutions and questions about the menu. I do wish the shrimp tempura had had more shrimp and fewer veggies, but it was all pretty good! I ordered a pretty standard dish, the General (Tso's) Chicken, and I enjoyed it a lot. My rating is for inconvenience ordering, and seemingly for not making their food from scratch. Earlier this evening, I pulled up the restaurant listing, went to their linked menu, and called to order. Upon placing my order of the Three Course for 2 Dinner Special of Hunan Beef and Springfield Cashew Chicken... I was told that this was not from their menu and that theirs ONLY appears on Facebook. Apparently the menu I found belongs to a prior Chinese restaurant at the same location. Bottom line... Zen Asian Cuisine won't honor the 3 course for 2 dinner special. Ok. I guess that I'll pull the menu and see how it looks. Inconvenient but whatever.What I found was just photos of their menu posted on their Facebook page. In this day and age, every restaurant in the country should have both a website and menu appearing for online orders. This was ridiculous. My next surprise was that it was virtually identical to the one I found minus the Dinner Special pricing. In other words, there is no reason the woman who answered couldn't have taken my order and simply explained pricing changes. I called back to place my order and went straight to a message stating that their voicemail is full. Apparently they don't stay on top of their phone system either. I waited a minute or two and called back a third time. The woman answered again and I placed an order for the Springfield Cashew Chicken and Hunan Chicken. This time, the woman on the phone explained that they were out of a main ingredient and were unable to make the Springfield Cashew Chicken. Ok?!? Me: "I'm sorry... does that mean that you are out of chicken, or cashews?" The woman explained that the restaurant is out of "the specific type of breaded chicken" for the dish. This was the final straw and I simply asked to cancel my order. Seriously, what an absolute waste of time. She could have allowed me to place my order on the first call. And why on earth is a restaurant unwilling or unable to bread chicken for a dish in their own menu??? Every Chinese restaurant I have ever heard of has dishes designed to be fast and easy to produce. I cancelled the rest of my order and will never waste another minute dealing with Zen Asian Cuisine. If they can't be bothered to prep their own dishes, particularly if they are out of pre-made chicken, then they don't need my business. read more

This was our first time here. It's a smaller place but they have a nice layout and it doesn't put off a cramped feeling. The waitress was quick and on top of the 5 tables she had. My husband drinks his tea very quickly but she was always there before it was empty. That's a big deal to my husband. This place is quiet and nice if you're looking to get away from the noisy crowds. Food was delish! Prices are reasonable and it was great to have lunch special pricing. They do not have hibachi (there are hibachi tables but they're roped off) here but I don't think that's a bad thing either. read more

I have to admit I'm bewildered by the 4 and 5 star reviews here. We went for lunch on Saturday of last week, and it was truly disappointing. We ate from the lunch specials menu, which offered a variety of entrees, all accompanied by a choice of wonton or hot and sour soup, an egg roll or 2 crab rangoons, and either white or fried rice all at the low price of $6.99. I ordered the Kung Bao (sic) beef, h&s soup, eggroll and fried rice. My wife ordered the Cashew Chicken, wonton soup, rangoons and fried rice. Where do I begin? Both soups were extremely watery and thin, and the wonton version was almost entirely flavorless. My soup had a bit more pizzazz to it, but wasn't even close to being like a traditional hot and sour. Both were served at slightly more than room temperature. The beef in my entree was ridiculously tough, the sauce (which is tagged as spicy) was anything but, and the egg roll allegedly stuffed with chicken and cabbage was unlike any egg roll I've ever had. Ever. And not in a good way. My wife's chicken was very under seasoned as well, and while the crab rangoons were acceptable, it was clear they'd never been anywhere near a crab, or even krab. As for the fried rice, the less said the better, other than to say it wasn't fried but appeared to just be white rice tossed in some soy sauce. Its ads tout the great atmosphere, but other than the fact that it was extremely dark inside on a very sunny afternoon, there was nothing much to recommend it. Sort of standard Chinese decor, with a Mongolian grill area that hadn't been used for what appeared to be quite a long time, although there was a big Buddha on the counter that we both admired for a minute or so. The Ladies' room had one stall marked Out of Order and the other one probably should have been closed off as well, or so I was told. Men's room wasn't really dirty, but didn't inspire a lot of confidence, either. Two stars, because our waitress was very nice and helpful. And because for the first time that we can recall, the two of us got the very same fortunes in our fortune cookies ("You will soon receive a message from a loved one" - we exchanged fortunes and hey, they both came true!) This was a really great place for groups and a good vegetarian friendly restaurant! We started with the fried spring rolls, edamame and gyoza. They were all very tasty, and the spring rolls and edamame were both vegetarian. The entrees all come with a side of rice and a soup or salad. The hot and spicy soup was very good but packs some heat so be warned! I got the cashew chicken stir fry, not the Springfield cashew chicken. The Springfield style is battered and fried (we didn't know this was a thing!). The good was really good and the service was super friendly, but the restaurant was pretty busy and took quite a bit to get us drinks and appetizers. We were taken aback when we pulled up in front of this place because it looked very deserted on the outside. But a near 70ish old couple walking in before us allayed our concern. They almost always never go to restaurants that they don't like. The server was good, the food was better.The fried rice was perfect, not greasy at all. People like me that like stir fried veggies at home because I am lazy to cook complex dishes know that my stir fried vegetables are either crispy or well cooked. Never both. We got takeout from Zen Asian for lunch. We were able to order the lunch specials for $6.99. The only difference is that you can't get soup included in the special price for take out. We got sweet and sour chicken with fried rice and crab rangoons and cashew chicken with white rice and crab rangoons. We also purchased a pint of hot and sour soup and Vietnamese spring rolls. The crab rangoons were creamy and good. The spring rolls were good. The soup was ok, mostly broth and not very spicy. The cashew chicken was average. The flavor was ok but not distinctive. The vegetables that were in it were a little overdone and kind of tired. Rice was ok. The sweet and sour chicken was not good. The meat was tough and stringy. I couldn't even finish it. My waitress was very nice, but was working the entire place by herself. The food was quite disappointing. My sweet and sour chicken came without sauce of any kind.
