Apparently in pre-2018 Sprinters, if a brake controller is not installed, the factory installed harness's converter is not powered and thus the harness does not function. Okay, that's a plausible response and this was unknown to me before they explained. I wish I had understood this at the time as I could have opted to use a simple 7 to 5 pin converter right at the plug to the trailer at a similar or less (?) cost to having them go to the labour and effort to access the taillight wiring. I also don't quite understand why simply powering the factory trailer harness without a brake controller if a 5 or 4 pin trailer connection is installed was not considered as this would have been a simple matter under the drivers seat. Regardless, I appreciate their explaining their rational but I would have done things a bit differently had I more information. Regarding the quality of the wiring work, it was a bit sloppy, and a short single conductor was spliced to lengthen with a different colour wire hidden under electrical tape. The harness was also routed into the interior of the van by breaking off the corner of an interior plastic vent cover behind the taillight and a hole drilled through the floor rather than route the harness out the bottom of the taillight and behind the exterior trim. Again, not terrible and still functional but in my opinion, there was a better way to do this. Finally, the factory harness was dangling under the the van and did not have a blanking plug or any protection to keep water, salt, muck out of the plug's terminals. Maybe this is how Mercedes delivers the van but it necessitated cutting off the plug to access the bare wires directly if the plug is not utilized soon after delivery. I will add a star for BH reaching out to explain and I hope that my response assists with their review. Addendum: BH is correct, I'm doing the wiring for the new 7 pin hitch myself. I figure as a marine electrician with over 35 years in the industry and owning my own marine electrical business repairing and designing electrical systems for million dollar yachts and others I both recognize quality workmanship and have no issue tackling this little project. It does however make me a bit more critical than other people of such things and my standards for workmanship may eclipse others. I'm sure BH is a good company and clearly has demonstrated their willingness to communicate. Yes, the plug was functional until it failed a few years back and I replaced it with another 5 pin style. It's only now that I have a trailer with electric brakes that I looked at the original work to make the necessary plug style changes. If I could offer 5 stars for communication alone I'd do that and I would recommend them as they are certainly willing to listen and I suspect, had the discussion at the time been in more depth, I would have been clearer in my expectations and direction. So as a result, both BH and I are a little wiser.
