The meat was tender but sadly covered with a brown pasty flavor less gravy that ruined it and couldnt tell if it was fresh or not. Our waitress heated my dish at table side on a burner but didn't do it very long and temperature of food was luke warm, at best. Had to flag other people down just to get. Ice tea refill. They delayed my wife's dinner. My mixed vegetables were soggy like it sat in water. My wife got a platter:"Hot Platter" 3 shrimp and spanakopita and like spinach cake and flaming cheese. Even after flaming presentation, She told me felt like just pulled out of refrigerator cheese wasn't warm. The flaming cheese while nice presentation was also mediocre at best. She only finished 1/3 of her meal. We are regular diners from fast food (have 2 teenagers) to nice sit down dinners. We both agreed this was inedible meal, poor food rating IMHO. As soon as we left, had to take 2 chewable Tums on way back; food did not sit well with me. I was ill rest of evening and still feel uneasy updating this 6 am Tuesday. Wonder how fresh food served on a Monday was. IMHO, NOT worth $100 or even less if it affected my Stomach. I wouldn't do it again even if free of charge; not willing to gamble. NOT on our return list ! BTW, the service was mediocre. My wife and I mentioned last month we took a cruise RC, what a wonderful top tier quality of food in main dining room and service on a cruise was just as good or better than any 5* Restaurants; puts Spiro to shame once you've had wonderful meals. We called ahead and Khalid answered the phone and confirmed that many items on the menu are gluten free, and with that we were on our way. The restaurant is in the shopping complex with the Wildwood Schnucks, on Old Manchester just near the intersection with Manchester / Hw 100. There were many other guess when we arrived and by time we left it was almost filled. Aldar means house and the team there makes you feel like you are home - thank you to Khalid and the team for making us so welcome! When they seat you, they bring a bowl of soup. It's the lamb soup mentioned by Froeb in his review: "There isn't any meat in this -- maybe a scant shred -- but lamb's grassy, funky flavor is unmistakable. The cloudy broth sticks to your lips and tongue, a texture patiently coaxed from bones. A peppery accent builds subtly and then not so subtly. The gracious welcome and that heat linger over the rest of your meal." The menu has many items, some veg, others with lamb, chicken and/or beef. Tonight my wonderful wife and I shared an order of lamb chops... amazing... the chops tender inside and nicely browned on the outside... atop (long grain) mandy rice, with fried onions, also tomato and cucumber salad and a side of favored yogurt / yoghourt. So so so good. I saw other tables had a large piece of bread... roughly the side of a large pizza, toasted in a hot oven to make many air bubbles in the crust - it looked so good. I asked for a small piece of the bread only wanting a little, and Khalid still brought a while order... some for the table and some I took home. I used to read his reviews in the Riverfront Times religiously. So when he praises any eatery in the region, I quickly put in on my tbe (to-be-eaten) list. Such was the case with Aldar Yemeni Cuisine. My wife, daughter, and I found ourselves in Wildwood this weekend following a scheduled visit to a Chesterfield play place for the kiddo. We needed a visit to nature after being surrounded by countless, screaming toddlers. After an hour at Castlewood State Park, it was time for some late afternoon vittles. The recent review of Aldar flashed in my mind as we loaded into the daddy-van. The wife agreed some Yemeni cuisine sounded delightful and we were on our way. Jump ahead to our table at the new restaurant, which was doing some brisk business at a time in the afternoon (3:00:ish) when most restaurants are facing a lull, even on a Saturday. That was our first good sign. The menu contains a plethora of Yemeni and Mediterranean choices, ranging from pita and hummus to baklava and tres leches cake. As is typical with me, I asked the server what they recommended. The Mandy Chicken was suggested, and I could sense some true passion from the server about the dish, so that was my selection. My wife chose the Mixed Grill Combo, and our daughter, being the typical four-year-old, brightened as soon as she saw the chicken nuggets on the menu. No amount of begging could convince her to try something even slightly more authentic. We were delighted by the lamb broth that was presented gratis at the beginning of the meal, along with a bowl of spicy Sahawaq, which the server explained could act as a condiment through the entire meal. It was indeed a delicious condiment. The broth was equally delicious; very soothing and comforting, despite the hot temperature outdoors. Now on to that Chicken Mandy. Wow. It's half a chicken with crispy skin and tender meat served with turmeric basmati rice and some raw vegetables for texture contrast. All the components were made even better with the addition of the Sahawaq. This was the perfect introduction to Yemeni cuisine. The portion was generous enough that I had breakfast for Sunday morning. I was very tempted to try some other, sweeter, items on the menu as well. The baklava, coffees, and smoothies were calling out to me. But I decided, perhaps against my better judgement, to use my craving for something sweet as a reason to return soon, as if we needed another reason beyond that crispy, flavorful chicken. Only two criticisms for Aldar; the beef portion of the Mixed Grill Combo was bland and dry. I only had a small taste and my wife assured me she was enjoying it slathered with the Sahawaq, but I was not impressed. The other, very small, critique was that the table and benches we were seated at were too far apart. I had to sit forward through the whole meal and felt the journey from plate to mouth was too far to be comfortable. It was an even bigger struggle for our daughter, who had to really stretch those short arms to reach her plate. Other than those two minor issues, everything else was near perfect. Five stars to the food, service, ambience, value, portion sizes, cleanliness, and overall experience. We will certainly be back as soon as we can.
