Avocado Salmon Salad Dinner
Eric W.

(Last visited October 17, 2023.) Often my wife and I dine next door at Beachland Tavern so we've watched the construction of Zaytoon's take place! It seemed like it took a long time, but finally they opened and we got the chance to check them out! Atmosphere/Appearance: Set inside a small plaza right on New Britain Avenue is this gem. There is a private parking lot so that's always super comforting! Once inside the place just OPENS UP to you. It's a huge room that's decorated so well with lots of natural light coming in from the big windows at the front and side. Everything was so straight, clean and neat! It just felt really nice in here, but it was quiet, only a few other tables present, but this place can hold a lot of people. Service: Our server took great care of us and I can't remember having any problems at all. The owner even came over to chat with us for a little bit. Food: B.Y.O.B.! Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I enjoyed everything I had here! I was able to check out the Zaytoon Sampler appetizer that showcases 3 different hummus types and some falafel. Everything tasted authentic, fresh and like it was made with love. I was also able to try their chicken wings which felt baked and were seasoned very well! For my entree I went with the Lamb Shank which was AMAZING! The flavors of the lamb were lighter than that of a lamb chop, but the seasonings were all there. It fell off the bone and it being on a bed of rice with light nuts and pita tied everything together very well. I really enjoyed this. Value: B.Y.O.B. alone makes this place worth it. Lol. But it's a Greek restaurant and it isn't cheap, but it's not fine-dining level either. I think the prices here are very fair. In conclusion, I really enjoyed myself here at Zaytoon's and I look forward to checking out some other things on their menu!

Wanted to treat myself to a nice dinner after a long day of work and I picked the best restaurant to do so! This was easily one of the most delicious and hearty meals I've had in a long time and I saved plenty for lunch tomorrow :) The service was awesome and I can't wait to recommend it to my friends and family!

I came here at 5:30 on a Thursday with a friend. There were no other customers in there and we waited for a few minutes to be greeted and seated. That made me a bit unsure of this place. However, our server was very kind and helpful as he answered all of our questions about the menu. I cannot remember the names of the meals we ordered but I took pictures and both of us were highly impressed with everything! I also ordered a dessert which was delicious as well. I have been one other time since my first visit and I was extremely impressed with the friendly service and delicious food. I can't wait to go back!

Really nice place with really good food. The owner is very nice! Service is a little bit slow but in the same time it's nice not to feel rushed. Perfect place for a Sunday dinner or catching up with friends.

This hidden gem was recommended to me and I've been telling everyone I know about this place!! The food was authentic and delicious. Reasonably priced and generous portions. Service was great, staff is very friendly and it's beautifully decorated. Give this place a try, you'll thank me.

On a trip, our party of 3 was looking for something to grab for lunch, as our initial option was closed for the New Year. I scouted out the location as a Mediterranean spot, hoping it would satisfy the other two. We pulled into the plaza and saw plenty of parking available. At the front desk, we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. The room was large, clean and open, without over-the-top decor. Beyond the lights near the kitchen doors, the low lighting in the dining area was supplemented by the afternoon sun. I am not sure how it would look in the evening, though. I wish we got their names, but those helping with waiting the tables were just as kind. The woman who took our order happily fulfilled the "surprise me" for my parent's drink, and they were happy with its fresh mint taste, and a hint of lemon with an apparent slight feeling of carbonation. We ordered baba ganoush, and got my request for warm pita (as much as we'd ask for!). It had freshness and acidity, a good helping of fresh chopped veggies, with the familiar smoky eggplant taste of other baba ganoush I've had still present. I would note that others I've had were almost entirely eggplant, which is my personal preference. The beef gyro was Middle Eastern style (no fries like some might be used to), with more veggies, and a chosen side of hummus. The olive oil on the hummus definitely made itself known with its pleasant natural bitterness. Now, the main reason why my parent asked me to write a review was the chicken kebab. And I would agree. The chicken was properly juicy, unlike every other chicken kebab my parent and I had ever gotten before. When I cut along the grain, the knife went right through. Often, I've had kebabs come with plain roasted veggies, but these had a sauce, and the carrot had caramelization. At $26.99, it was a bit more expensive than I'd expect for the portion size, but the quality absolutely made up for it. My parent was so happy that they saved the location to bring my other parent to in the future.

Grilled Lamb, chicken with rice, salad and hummus

I thoroughly enjoyed my first time dining at Zaytoon. The restaurant is very comfortable with a very welcoming decor. I had the kibbeh appetizer with tahini sauce. It was so hot and fresh. For dinner I ordered the grilled lamb and chicken combination. It was served with rice, salad and hummus. One scent of the aroma from the rice and you know it was going to taste great. Perfectly seasoned. The hummus was smooth and flavorful. Plenty of pita bread for it. There was so much food I couldn't finish it. I Got to take home a mini meal of everything. My servers Jazmine and Ziad got everything right. They were always available but not in the way. A great experience from start to end. Put down your phone snd go there now.

Greek salad with salmon, would not get the Greek salad again. The salmon was the highlight for sure!!!

I have been twice and have not loved anything I have tried yet. BYOB and the spot next door being full with a long wait is actually what made me go back the second time to try something else. I'm not sure I will be back. I love a Greek salad, but whatever I had here did not taste like a Greek salad. Service is friendly overall I guess, but so slow. Even though I've never been there when it's packed, the food seems to take forever to come out. Then you have to flag someone down for more water while you're hanging out waiting for your food or during your meal. So, the space is overall clean and pretty, big open and airy, but the food is slow and lacking for me. I'd probably say closer to 2.5 stars even, but BYOB absolutely bumps it up to a 3 without question. There is a liquor store in the same plaza, so get some wine and be prepared to be here a while if you're giving it a try.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday around brunch time and it was busy, but we got a spot at the bar and they still had a few extra seats. Menu had a good selection of sharables all for decent prices and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time while being super fresh. Hummus was amazing - super great to dip the bread in. Sizes of the dishes were just right, a little small for me but average I'm sure for others. Shrimp and mussels were great whole the artichoke was okay - would probably skip that next time. Overall, great flavors and super tasty - thanks, Zohara!

Once we placed an order, it took forever for the food to come. We ordered some apps, a meal of the lamb, the kebabs and my mom ordered a seafood tajin. We asked for the steak kebab to be medium rare, it was provided to us well done. The seafood tajin didnt come out at all, and when we asked about it, they put in the order. By the time my mom got her meal, everyone else was done. We also had to ask multiple times to get coca cola refills. When we ordered dessert, they did nothing to acknowledge or celebrate my mom's birthday. Overall the food was average, but what really brought my rating down was the poor service.

I was tempted to write a bad review just so this restaurant doesn't become too crowded, but this restaurant deserves all the praise. The interior was small and a little loud, but they're moving a few doors down soon to a bigger restaurant which am I very excited to see! Even though it was almost completely full, they made accommodations to get us a seat as walk-ins. Our waitress was fantastic and attentive despite serving the entire dining room. She made some excellent recommendations of dishes to try and was very enthusiastic. For food, we tried the chefs bread which came with delish dips (my favorite being the delicious yogurt and eggplant). They even had gluten free bread that was fresh baked. It is without a doubt the best gluten free bread I've had at a restaurant. We also tried the salmon tagliatelle which was creamy, fresh, and delicious and the short rib gnocchi which was homey and comforting. Only complaint, maybe a little too much parsley. Even though we were stuffed, we had to try dessert since everything else was so fantastic. We tried the iced pistachio crème brûlée and the Caramel cheesecake. The cheesecake wasn't your traditional New York slice you'd expect, but it was light and doused in delicious caramel. The iced pistachio crème brûlée was out of this world, I didn't think I'd finish it but ended up basically licking the plate. Everything was amazing. Take the drive off of Blue Back Square and try this place out next time you visit West Hartford, you won't regret it!

There is ample parking in the lot. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, and food overall was great-- especially the bread dishes. Both the sabich flatbread and the jerusalem bagel tastes very freshly baked, with a nice crust and chew. Really balanced, natural flavors in the toppings of the flatbread and the dips for the chef's bread. The cook on the branzino was also great-- extremely tender and well seasoned. I got the oxtail raviolis and while the pasta was a nice al dente and the meat filling was flavorful, it was a little cold on the inside of the raviolis (maybe due to their size). My friend said the cheese raviolis in beet sauce was also nice, and the portions for the entrees were fair. I will say the malabi was small for $10, a little smaller than a yoplait cup-- not especially unique in flavor or texture, and I wouldn't order it again especially for the price. Overall good food, and would definitely come back for their fish dishes and flatbreads-- hopefully in their new space.

City Kebab is a Middle Eastern kebab restaurant that opened in Hartford, Connecticut in September…read more2023. It was founded by husband and wife Uzbek immigrants Timur Rakhimov and Aziza Djalmamedova. The couple immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2010. After over a decade of education, training, and hard work, they decided to try their luck as restaurateurs. They found a space that used to be home to Hook & Ladder Restaurant (right next to Hartford Fire Department's historic South Green Station). The couple hired Turkish immigrant Hasan Korkmaz as their head chef. Together, they curated a menu full of traditional Turkish and Uzbek cuisine that is all prepared in accordance with halal dietary laws. Some of the menu items include kebabs, samsas, falafel, gyro, and mezzo platters. I recently dined at City Kebab while I was in Hartford to see a concert. I checked Yelp to see if there was anywhere good to grab dinner before the show, and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine sounded fantastic to me. When I entered, I was greeted by the very friendly co-owner Timur, who said, "I work for my wife. She's the real boss." After being seated, I began to look over the menu. When Timur returned, he tried to recommend that I get gyro. I told him, "Oh no. I know exactly what I want. I'd like to order a variety of small plates to sample. I'm a local food blogger and I want an authentic experience." Timur was just ecstatic and quickly went to give my order to the kitchen staff. I started off first with a small "Mixed Cold Appetizer" (combo of hummus, babganush, haydari, soslu patlican, antep ezme, avocado ezme), the "Falafel" (mixture of chickpeas, parsley, onions, garlic, Middle Eastern spices, deep fried) and a small teapot of "Turkish Black Tea". Timur brought me some complimentary "Ramazan Pidesi" (Turkish Bread) as well as a glass of "Fresh Squeezed Lemonade". He said, "You need to try this!" So far, everything was excellent! For the main course, I had the "Mixed Grill" (mixture of chicken shish, beef shish, kofte, lamb adana, beef & lamb gyro, served w/ white rice, bulgur rice, Mediterranean salad). It was a symphony of Mediterranean flavors! Timur surprised me with a "Pumpkin Samsa" (pumpkin filling in crispy pastry, seasoned with spices, served w/ tomato sauce) and said, "You can't leave without trying this. It's an Uzbek specialty!" It was very tasty! Before the meal was over, he said, "Save some room. I have another surprise for you at the end." He brought me "Künefe with Dondurma" (Turkish ice cream). I had never tried this before. Stuffed with melted mozzarella and then topped with pistachio and almond crumbles, it was simply divine! I repeatedly thanked Timur for his hospitality and for sharing his culinary cultural traditions with me. I had enough leftovers for both my wife and I to have for dinner the following evening. I'll definitely be returning with my whole family. If you're looking for an authentic Middle Eastern culinary experience in Hartford, then look no further than City Kebab!
