A-ok and the first time I've stepped inside. Got a coupon in the mail for 3 free chicken fingers and decided that would be a great lunch today. I arrived a little after 2pm on a weekday--lots of parking, cars in the drive-through, no line inside at the register. No one tried to make me order anything else, the front area was clean, and my to-go bag was ready before I could check in on Yelp. There wasn't any chaos behind the counter, everything was extremely calm. The only dine-in customers I saw on my very short visit was a team of UPS drivers who had just finished ordering when I walked in. I tend to prefer dark meat generally since it's less dry, but these white meat strips were good. I got two sauces without requesting any, and my to-go bag was ready before I could even check in on Yelp. Still a little salty in my opinion between the coating and the sauce, but dang if free isn't the best gravy. read more

This is a must stop for me if traveling to or from Austin. Didn't know Zaxby's had locations in Texas at all until I ran across the San Marcos location. They are much more prevalent in the South (went to school in Alabama and South Carolina, and they are EVERYWHERE!). I've since learned there may be locations closer to San Antonio, but I digress. In my opinion, Zaxby's wins hands down over Cane's, which is more prevalent in San Antonio. Zaxby's menu has a lot more going on, for starters. This location, though, is just okay. Nothing particularly bad, nothing particularly good. The drive thru seems much more efficient, but obviously at the expense of the customers dining inside. The wait times for a dine in meal have been too long. The other thing I've noticed, is a lack of general cleanliness. So I've been living in San Marcos for about 2 years now, but it was my first time ever going to Zaxby's. I went because it was recommended by a coworker so I figure why not give it a try. From the curb appeal, immediately I got the "franchise chain" vibe (tbh I dont know if it's a franchise or not but I did get that vibe). The inside was clean, and looked like a restaurant style set up but with a fast food appeal. Confirmed... it is a fast food franchise. When ordering, I will say up front that the workers were very courteous and polite. Always appreciated as a first time customer. My coworker recommended the "nibblers" but I figure I should try their staples like the wings and tenders because if they can't do that right then chances are the rest of the menu is not going to be great. The wings were crispy and had a good amount of sauce. You can tell they deep fried it before drenching it in sauce because when I took bites of the wings, it had that crispy air pocket sensation prior to getting to the meat. Not a bad thing at all, just was surprised. The tenders were small and had minimal breading. Some people like that and some don't. I was indifferent about it. The Texas toast and fries were on point and their Zaxby's sauce reminded me of a thousand island ketchup and mayonnaise vibe. It was okay to be honest. Overall, I wasn't wowed, but I wasnt disappointed either. The food was priced right, the customer service was great, and the food was exactly what you paid for. Would I go back? For sure! Now I had Zaxby's in ATL twice and both times were really good. But this location not so much the tenders were dry and hard. They were also really salty. The customer service was not all that great the young lady with the blonde hair and pretty blue eyes was pretty rude. I asked her which sauce did they have for the tenders and she pointed to the menu. Being that I never been to this location I did not know they didn't give out trays for dine in. When they called my order I advised it was for dine in and she stated they couldn't serve me without the containers and bags (which was fine) but she seemed annoyed explaining it to me. I understand due to Covid. Most of the tables were dirty but customers may have just left from eating, but I noticed the cashier was cleaning in between costumers while we were dining. The bathroom was really clean. That's pretty much my experience here today. read more

Meh. This place is okay, I think there are much better places similar to this (ex: Canes). I got the wings and things which comes with 5 buffalo wings, 3 chicken fingers, toast, celery, fries and a drink. The Zax sauce is really good. It's similar to Canes sauce but more peppery. The toast is VERY VERY buttery so I wasn't a big fan. It would've been much better if they didn't drench it in butter. The fries aren't very crispy and I didn't like them. The chicken tenders were pretty good and I'd recommend them. It was my favorite thing out of everything I tried at Zaxbys. However, they seemed a bit small. I didn't like my buffalo wings but I think it's just personal preference and not then actually being bad. Also, you can choose whatever sauce you prefer from their menu. The staff was extremely friendly and the restaurant was pretty clean. Great customer service! My biggest concern is that my food took a really long time to come. This could be partly because I came an hour before closing but I don't think you should wait 25-30 minutes for fast food. read more

I love Zaxby's as by my other reviews in different locations. I was really impressed with this one. Its actually on the other side of I35 next to the Starbucks going South. First of all they could actually understand me at the drive thru speaker. When I got to the window the guy that took my money was super sweet and nice. I really love their salads. This particular time I got the cobb with Ranch dressing. Perfect. It kept really well since I was coming back to Austin. I am actually eating leftovers now. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the salad didn't look sloppy. I also ordered their french fries. Which I've seen a lot of people do not like them. Sorry but all that savory goodness added on my fries got eaten as I was driving down the highway. Fries are the one thing you do not want to wait on eating. I like it they actually get them crispy enough to not be limp. As far as the Zaxby's sauce goes I'm not a fan but I do order ranch to make up for it. Regardless they are still great! I don't know why people compare it to Cain's its not the same. Yea they both sell chicken but I wasn't impressed with the so called competition. I know its hard for others to like new things and it will take a few times over to really get in the grove of it. I have to admit I absolutely love Zaxbys. When we lived in Florida had it quite often. I was always aware of this location but never took time to stop when traveling in the area. Finally took the time today and glad I did. Also glad not one closet as otherwise I would probably be about 20 lbs heavier. Many chicken strip aficionados will argue Zaxbys vs Canes if they have had both. While I love both I definitely favor Zaxbys. One main reason is the variety of sauces. I love the hot honey mustard and for a minimal charge you can have your strips tossed in the sauce of choice. This is no light dusting of sauce. The strips are literally dripping in sauce. Also love the variety of items and my wife actually does not mind eating here as they have excellent salads. She actually suggested returning here the next time we are up this way which is unusual for her. She had a Zensational Zalad which was an Asian based salad with chicken strips. The salad was huge. I shared some and she still took home a large portion. Had at least 3 chicken strips worth of chicken on it and lettuce was all fresh. The sides are also excellent. Fries are crinkle cut and crispy outside but soft inside. The slaw is quite good as well and all dinners come with Texas toast. My wife's salad came with a surprisingly good egg roll as well. If you are ever close to any Zaxbys and have never tried but love chicken strips I would definitely stop in. read more

I grew up eating Zaxby's (I'm from Georgia), so I was SO excited to be able to have one close to me in Texas. The first couple of times I went (right after this location opened), the food was great and was just how I remembered it. However, I just went through the drive through, and I am disappointed. There is literally NONE of their famous seasoning on my fries, and my chicken fingers are WAY over cooked. Sad. I hope it's just growing pains. I hope whoever is in charge of quality control reads this. Don't ruin my favorite restaurant!! And don't make a bad impression to those who haven't been to a Zaxby's before. My son had to stop in because he was told how awesome it was and maybe some of the food is ok but the food we had was just not up to par. 20 wings, 10 teriyaki and 10 regular buffalo. They are cooked fresh but the skin wasn't crispy and the buffalo sauce was lacking any real flavor. The teriyaki sauce was just too sweet. Sides for these two were gator chips with buffalo dip. The chips were really good but the buffalo dip is not a dip at all, it's more of chopped up chicken with some buffalo sauce mixed in. Spicy fried mushrooms were next up and what a total let down. Sliced floppy fried mushrooms are just not worth being on the menu. Last and not really any better than the first were chicken tenders with fries and coleslaw. When I first walked in, I was extremely impressed with the cleanliness and the overall appeal of the restaurant. The customer service was impeccable and the menu was extremely large (Fried pickles, homemade potato chips, white cheddar cheese curds, salads and multiple milkshakes). My son made the mistake of asking for an extra "Cane's" sauce, forgetting that we were not at Cane's (A similar restaurant chain that sells chicken fingers and crinkle cut fries). The cashier was quick to respond in telling us that Zaxby's was around six years prior to Cane's and when we tasted the food, we would never go back to Cane's since the quality here is so much better. 1. The banana pudding shake was out of this world! It was actually the best part of the meal. 2. The white cheddar cheese bites were okay but we encountered four in our batch that were completely empty, meaning there was no cheese inside. 3. The buffalo chicken salad was pretty good but I feel I was a little misled. The cashier told me that the salad came with fried onions. I was expecting some sort of onion straws/rings. Instead, they were more like Durkee French fried onion crisps, the kind you buy in a can to put on green bean casserole at Thanksgiving. LOL - also, the buffalo chicken on the salad was cold. Overall, the salad was tasty. 4. Now to the chicken fingers, what Zaxby's is famous for... it was overcooked and so were the french fries. We are very familiar with Cane's and there is no comparison. Cane's chicken strips are much more fresh and so are their french fries. Their dipping sauce is homemade daily, not prepackaged in blister packs like Zaxby's.
