While searching for a light lunch, I discovered Zao Asian Cafe. Their menu consists of build-your-own meals: salads, bowls, wraps, tacos, and soup. Essentially, it's Vietnamese-inspired food (minus the tacos). I placed my order online and chose a bowl that included the following customizations: * Base - Half & half (cucumber & noodles) * Protein - Tofu * Sauce - Super sauce (green curry and chili lemongrass) * Toppings - Zao way (includes carrot, daikon, cilantro, peanuts & crispy onions) It was fresh and delicious! The pick-up process was easy. Since I ordered it ahead, it saved me a lot of time. I didn't interact with any staff members because my food was sitting pretty on the order pick-up shelf. I went today with a friend. I had the chicken noodle bowl with teriyaki sauce. The noodle were only half cooked and the only veggie was broccoli which I don't prefer. Didn't eat much of it. My friend ordered the beef broth soup. I am not sure what the broth was it didn't look like beef both and the noodles were the same noodles as mine which is similar to beef lo mien noodles which are not really great for soup. No complaints! This modern Asian take with a similar set-up to a chipotle has incredible options. Start by choosing a soup, noodle, burrito, or taco meal. Choose your protein and then all the fixins. I had the chicken soup which kind of resembles pho as cilantro and jalapeño were added. As a drink my wife and I both got the canned Thai tea which was surprisingly tasty! I can't get enough of this place!! Whenever we are in the SLC area we have to come here more than once. This is the only place that serves up those thin styled rice noodle which I love! The green curry with tofu and chicken or tofu and meatballs in a bowl is my favorite. The staff is most always quick and clean, and the interior is always clean and easy to walk around in. So the food was amazing. I ordered the tacos but somehow got soup. It was a cold day. So I didn't say anything and ate it. It was incredible. But the music is too loud... the staff literally had no idea what I ordered. Tacos doesn't even sound like soup. Again it was AMAZING. I would go back. I am sooo glad there's now a location in St. George!! My family and I have been going to Zao for a few years in northern UT so we were thrilled that one opened in southern Utah. Excellent flavors. Such a fabulous, simple menu. The app is a fun way to discover many different options in preparing your meal with sauces and add-ins. I'm not a huge tofu lover but theirs is absolutely delish. I love the tacos, the soup, the bowls, and let's not forget the chips and guacamole made with avocado and edamame! So good and so healthy. There has been a glut of Pacific Rim-inspired franchises openin' in our area lately and my wife and I have tried 'em all. Our latest was last night at Zao's. Same old stuff. There is, imo, only so much ya can do with rice, noodles, cabbage, a few sauces and the ever-familiar add-ons. After some light-hearted goadin' from a good friend, my wife opted to try tofu on her rice bowl. First time for everythin'. I even snuck a small piece. Oh well, so much for that experiment. Although the balance of the bowl was fresh and interestin', it had little flavor - not unlike the other places we've tried. I ordered the salad, with steak as my "protein" (the ubiquitous word in these new places) with a variety of their add-ons in hopes my taste buds would explode! Nope. I even added yakisoba noodles (an extra $1) and was rewarded with about 3 cents worth. While I applaud the efforts in all these new restaurants, and wish them success, none has inspired me to a timely revisit. read more
