Out of all of the Mediterranean restaurants in the area this has to be favorite out of them all and is constantly on our lunch rotation for the office. I first ate at a Zankou chicken location, some 24 years ago, at their original Hollywood location. I became an instant fan. However, I moved to the South Bay a while ago, and I've had to get my rotisserie chicken fixed elsewhere. I would always compare these new businesses to Zankou. Only one or two came close. So, one day on my drive on Hawthorne Boulevard to the 405 freeway, I was delighted to see that Zankou chicken was opening up a location in the South Bay. So, why did I give one of my favorite rotisserie chicken places a two star rating? Well, it has been 36 minutes since I've ordered my food. And, no food. This place is supposed to be a fast casual restaurant. There is nothing FAST about this place. I can see all the way to the back kitchen. The people back there are working as if they are descendants from sloths. You could see the front kitchen and they make the back kitchen workers look like speed demons. One guy is awkwardly trying to remove chickens from the rotisserie and cut them up. The front of house staff are just standing around while lines intermittently form at the cash register. After 15 minutes, I inquired where the food was. We ordered a falafel wrap a cup of soup and a quarter chicken white plate. I went to the counter and was told it would be five more minutes. Obviously, the food was not ready in 5. I went back 10 minutes later and spoke to a young lady who seemed clueless. I shared with her that I don't understand why it's taking so long because this is literally just assembling pre-cooked items. She corrected me and said no everything is cooked to order and it would take 15-20 more minutes. I don't think she understands the difference between house made and cooked to order. They did not put on a raw chicken to start cooking when I asked for a quarter chicken plate. They weren't pickling the beets to order. The soup was obviously sitting in a soup kettle keeping warm. They weren't cooking lentils to order. The only thing that I could see being made to order were the falafel balls. I asked for the premade soup so my wife can at least get started eating. She went and got the cup of soup and filled it up partially and gave it to us. I went back and they topped it off, but they shouldn't have served it partially full. After a period of time, the rest of the food came, but they also put in another cup of soup. That cup of soup was filled up to the top. However, they didn't include a spoon, and there are no spoons at the self service station. They did apologize for the long wait and offered to get me a large side, but what do I need with a gallon of hummus when my dish already comes with a side and two pita? As far as ambience goes, the place is brand spanking new. Everything looks new. We did have a lot of open tables that were dirty. They really do need to have some of these employees who are just standing around making rounds in the dining area and wiping down tables. Now, onto the food. The chicken breast was plump and juicy. I would've liked the skin to be slightly browner and crispier like I remember. The garlic toum sauce is as delicious as I remember. I substituted the hummus for tzatziki sauce and the tzatziki sauce was cold and refreshing. I wish I had a couple of extra spicy peppers. It would have been nice if they had a self service area where you can grab more. My wife enjoyed her hummus wrap. The soup tasted great and was thick but not smooth because I think they partially blend in the lentils. Bottom line, would I go back? I really hope the extremely slow service is just due to the fact that maybe they only opened up in the past few weeks to a month. So, I probably will go back. I used to live in DTLA and frequented the Zankou there so I was super excited for this one to open here in the South Bay! Finally got a chance to visit and got the tarna & shawarma combo plate with tabbouleh, salad and tzatziki. Also ordered thru the app and got a free side of pita chips :) Food was so good and meat was super tender and flavorful as I remembered it! The tabbouleh was also really good and refreshing! The service was also impeccable- we initially got our food to go but decided to eat at the restaurant instead. My husband and I had been waiting for this spot to finally open, so we were excited to check it out. We came in around 3:30 and it was pretty busy. The service was friendly, and the person taking our order was helpful, asking if we had any questions or wanted any substitutions. We chose rice, cucumber salad, and hummus, and it also comes with pita bread and a sauce of your choice. We went with the garlic sauce, which was really tasty. The veggies were fresh, and the basmati rice was soft and fluffy. My absolute favorite was the hummus. It was rich and creamy, and the olive oil on top made it even better. I would honestly go back just for a side of that. My only complaint, but an important factor, was the meat on the kabob. It was pretty dry. Yay - Zankou is in the South Bay near where I work! It's a good location of this chain, new and shiny with happy and helpful employees. It's now $10 for my favorite Chicken Tarna sandwich here, so not exactly cheap, but the flavor is as good as always. The pickled peppers popped with flavor as always, but the pickled radishes were a bit lacking in flavor compared to what I remember. And, I am always happy to see the Spi-c mints and Tapatio packets that I consider simply part of the experience here. I voted for Zankou to come to Torrance! About like a decade ago and kids, don't let anyone tell you dreams don't come true! I have been enjoying Zankou Chicken's, well, chicken...and other yummables for 20+ years now. Whenever on the West Side (including when I worked in Century City) or even off the freeway in Long Beach, many a time I frequented or ordered in from the Sepulveda/Santa Monica Blvd. location and it was always, well, just like today! The consistent awesomeness of this place is amazing. I didn't make it in time for being one of the first 100 customers on Opening Day (which gave the opportunity to be a part of a drawing for "Free Zankou for a Year" which is about the best thing I have ever heard of) but I sure made a point to pick up 4 Chicken Tarna Sandwiches, Tzatziki and Mutabal (think Baba Ganouj...or smoky eggplant excellence) to take home on my way home from work! And it was just as perfect as the first time I had it. The Chicken Tarna is Zankou's version of the Chicken Shawerma (or Chicken Gyro) and it is made up of wonderfully spiced and juicy chicken pieces layered in pita with tomatoes, lettuce and their amazing garlic sauce that, I think, started it ALL! I have had the Beef Shawerma many times as well. In fact, I have consistently ordered the combo plate of both, but you know, like today, if I had to choose just one...it's the Chicken Tarna all the way! While walking across the parking lot, I casually asked another patron--who had just ordered a plate--how the food was. His response was, "So-so, and expensive." That gave me pause, but we went in anyway. We were greeted warmly, which was a good start. We ordered two Build-a-Bowls, which include one protein, two sides, and a bed of jasmine rice. Our choices were tri-tip shawarma, cucumber salad, hummus, and two garlic sauces. I also paid extra for additional meat on one bowl. When we opened the bowls at home, I couldn't believe what I paid--$38 for lunch. The base bowl is $9.99, then you add $3.99-$6.99 depending on the protein, plus extra charges for additional meat. For $16 per bowl, the portions were extremely disappointing. The tri-tip shawarma was shredded and nearly dry, saved only by the garlic sauce (which had the consistency of softened coconut oil). The hummus and cucumber salad were the only items that stood out positively. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. Just this past week, Zankou Chicken spot opened up in Lawndale and I am already quite the fan! I chose to get their Combo Plate ($19.99). with a chicken skewer, a shish skewer and sides of basmati rice, hummus, and tzatziki. I also got a side of muttabal ($5.29). The skewers were amazing! We were invited to the sneak peek soft opening and we got the right one it opened! There were a lot of staff there training other staff but they really had it fine tuned and it was very impressive. The chicken was amazing. It was so moist inside and delicious. I chose mine with the rice and cucumber salad and my husband had hummus and rice. We also got the falafel appetizer and pita and muttabal (which was a bit too smoky for our taste) also got the tahini, garlic and harissa sauce which were all delicious. So was the hummus and falafel! The cucumber mint lemonade was delicious! Overall the ambience was fantastic, super clean and super friendly staff. It was really flavorful and did not disappoint. It's hard to compare to CAVA due to the lack of topping options yet the flavor is on par. Being halal from the start, it quickly became my go-to spot -- finally a convenient location close to home. That all came to an end this week. The chicken came out completely dry with none of that crispy texture I'd grown to love. Something was clearly off, so I called to ask what happened. That's when I found out they had just switched from halal to non-halal meat - with zero notice to customers. Two months in and they're already making a change this big without so much as a sign on the door or a heads-up on social media. A lot of people chose this location specifically because it was halal. We have gone to this location so many times. I could eat Zankou daily if I could. I always pre-order and pick up. They're always quick, efficient and friendly! Here's our usual order. Chicken Tarna Plate Tri-Tip Shawerma Plate Tarna & Shawerma Combo Plate You usually select sauces and we always get garlic sauce (must have), Harrisa and tahini sauce. You also get 3 selections of side options so these are our favorites. Basmati rice Hummus Mutabbal Cucumber salad Tabbouleh salad Tahini salad Diced tomatoes and pickled turnips They offer various sides and we always get 5 side orders of falafel. I was not a huge fan of falafel before but I really LOVE Zankou's falafel. It is a must for me and my husband! For dessert they have baklava which was my first time to try theirs and it is really good but the piece was so small for $1.99. I was expecting a bigger slice. LOL! I love desserts so was sad to see the size which was almost a 1.5x1.5 inch piece or less. Do not get me wrong it was delicious!!! A few wishes: I do hope they will offer a family sized version of their mediterranean plates. I am not sure if you can add extra meat on the plates but would love that option. One last thing is they have the BEST garlic sauce so we ALWAYS order a big container of it! If you never tried Zankou chicken I highly recommend them and please go for the mediterranean plates. Their rotisserie is good but I think the different mediterranean plates are where it's at! I am sure all their other items are amazing but that is my family go to always when we eat at Zankou!
