Stopped by Zand's on my way back to Houston Thanks to Yelp reviews. Had the Lamb Kubideh, double meat, to go. Owner asked if I wanted it spicy and whether I wanted it dry or juicy. Appreciate the owner asking to tailor to my preferences. Got spicy and juicy. Also ordered some dolmas. The Lamb Kubideh was delicious. I like things spicy and the Kubideh had the perfect amount of spice and was juicy enough that I kept my napkins at the ready. Dolmas were awesome and quickly devoured. We came here to give this a shot with all the good reviews, but came away really disappointed. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that the decor really left a lot to be desired. The interior just looked so cold and unwelcoming. We had the dolma and hummus for our appetizers. The hummus was cold and the pita bread was just lukewarm and not fluffy at all. None of it tasted very fresh. The dolma is probably an acquired taste so I can't really comment on it but we didn't like the taste of it. We had the lamb and beef platters, respectively, for our entrees. I've had a lot of lamb dishes in my time and it is one of my favorite red meats. My lamb skewers just didn't taste at all like lamb and tasted like processed beef. The beef skewers were actually a bit better and at least tasted what they were supposed to taste like. The rice and salad that came with the platter were underseasoned and drenched in salad dressing. Neither of us were able to finish our plates. The only upside to this restaurant is that the service is really good and the staff is really friendly. Overall, Shiraz is the better Middle Eastern restaurant in town. By a long shot. read more

I gave this place a try on one of those nights where you just don't feel like cooking. I tried out the lamb dinner plate on an order to-go. The lamb was great-delicious flavor and very tender...but I was unimpressed with the rest of the dinner. The rice was ehhh and the salad swimming in salad dressing. Pita bread is extra, I feel like it should have been included in the price of the dinner. I also ordered a side of tzatziki...it was much better the second day, with the flavors settling in a bit. The staff were friendly, helping to raise the rating, as poor customer service seems to be abundant in this town. I'd be willing to give Zand's another chance, but think that for a the same price range, Shiraz is a better option for Mediterranean inspired food in BCS. read more

Finally got around to trying Zand's recently and now I feel like a butt for not going there earlier. I get the veggie sandwich, tomatoes, onions, squash, and peppers, wrapped in a pita like a burrito. Pitarito. All the veggies are cooked perfectly, and there's none of the awkward, aah, I can't bite this veggie in half, so I guess the whole thing is going to just have to come out of my sandwich and hang awkwardly out of my mouth thing. The have two sauces, a thin garlic mayo type sauce, and a chile sauce. GET BOTH. The garlic sauce will give you awesome breath the rest of the day, and the chile sauce will give it just the slightest bit of heat. Tasty fluffy plain rice, the fries are...just fries. Maybe you could stuff them into your pitarito or something, that actually sounds pretty tasty. The babaganush is really really really good. Super smoky, which is just what I like in babawhatevertheacceptablespellingis. The baclava is tasty, but a little less sweet than I was expecting it to be. They have a menu section on the back with 4 or 5 veggie options, like the pomegranate and walnut stew, and the herb and kidney bean stew that I keep meaning to try, but fond memories of garlic sauce dripping down my arm pulls my back to the veggie sandwich. Bonus: they check if you're vegan or just vegetarian when you order a veggie item, since some sauces/garnish may have dairy or eggs (like the garlic sauce). It's a husband and wife team, and both are very helpful when ordering, and explaining what things are and when they have specials. The inside is really small and bare, but who cares, the people are nice and the food is awesome. I always get to go, anyway. DO NOT UNWRAP YOUR SANDWICH. You and your clothes will regret it, but your dog will love licking the garlic sauce that's dripping off your elbow. Eat it like you eat one of those DIY burritos. read more

We are in town visiting from Houston and wanted to eat some thing that is unique to the area. After a yelp search we found this restaurant. It is a hole in the wall that you might not stop in but you're missing out if you do not. The food was absolutely amazing! Homemade hummus and the best homemade pita bread. The servings were huge and the prices are low. I enjoyed a platter with lamb and gyro meat. They asked if we liked spicy which we love so they put a sauce on there that was incredible which was homemade. The service was also amazing! Don't miss this spot. read more

Being "persian" I went in and tried it out. I Usually go to Shiraz, very disappointed. The food was so bland. I had to add so much salt to make my chicken kabob taste decent. I asked about the traditional chicken kabob with bone and they didn't have it. No salad shirazi or most o kheyar. Tonight was my second time eating at Zand's. Just like my first visit, I came away overly impressed. The store front is modest, and somewhat hard to see from the road. The interior, which used to be a very small bakery, is now a very small Persian restaurant. There is little to nothing fancy about Zand's, but I'll assume you're not stopping by for the ambiance. Instead, you should stop by for some of the best food in BCS. Like every other reviewer, I'll have to compare Zand's to Shiraz. The menu at Zand's is less extensive, and lacks my favorite dish from Shiraz, the silky, smoky baba ganuj. They do have hummus with bread for $2, which is at least a substitute. The menu consists of either platters or kebabs which are served with a side salad (which is simple and simply delicious) and, for one or two bucks more respectively, either rice or french fries. I have yet to try the french fries, but the rice is a great long grain white rice spiced with something I can't quite put my finger on. And, speaking of spices on really can't quite put their finger on, there's a shaker at the table full of a delicious brown spice mix. I shook quite a bit of this onto my rice and then, quite literally, put my finger on it. Then I tasted my finger. Then I did this again, and again, and again. I can't get enough of whatever this spice mix is, but I dared not ask lest I learn how to make it at home and die of spice overdose. Tonight I tried the salmon, which was cooked perfectly, and not overcooked like nearly every other place in this town. The fish had a smoky air to it along with a sharp citrus taste and some fragrant spice. Just amazingly well prepared. (On my previous visit I had both the beef and lamb. Both were delicious. The owner even brought out some slightly curried chicken for us to try. That was also fantastic and juicy.) The owner, who also seems to do a lot of the cooking, is just a delight. He came to our table several times, always with a huge smile on his face, and is charming enough to keep us coming back again and again, in spite of the food. If you're coming from the A&M campus, head down Texas Ave. and turn right into the Whataburger parking lot just before Villa Maria. Zand's is located in the shopping strip immediately to your left, next to Chef Cao's. And, for god's sake, don't go to Chef Cao's. You have a fantastic place next door that actually serves good food. And, for god's sake, Zand's, get me some baba ganuj. :) read more

You can never get enough of Zand's Persain Kebabs! There are so many great things about this place. My best friend Kali worked here a while back so I have been here many many times and I'll never get tired of it. The garlic sauce is the absolute best with french fries and their hummus is #1. I always get the lamb kebab with either pita and hummus or french fries and garlic sauce. I read the previous reviews and I agree that it is worth a trip. I noticed that they are working through some decor type issues; however, they just opened and the quality of the food easily overcomes the lack of decor. Also, I talked to one of the staff members and they said they are in process of shopping for Persian rugs to hang on the wall. as an Iranian, I can say the food is very tasty and I like different items that they have. I would love to see more items on the menu, especially the iranian yogurt drink (similar to Indian Lassi or Turkish Ayran). Having real Iranian Baghlava and tea on the menu would make it even more awesome. If it continues like this they might need more chairs and tables (inside/outside) This place is just a few days old right now and I have been there twice already. I wish the best for them. and yeah they make the kebabs on a charcoal grill, that's why it is delicious read more

I spend a nice $20 bucks for lunch but wanted to try some things. Dolma was fantastic - I asked for it hot bit they will serve it cold as well. For main course, I got the ground lamb platter with rice and salad. Excellent! Baclava to top off the meal and it was complete. I recommend trying Zands. A favorite lunch spot. Everything is spot-on, get the garlic sauce. The spicy is not Mexican spicy, just flavorful. The chicken kabob platters are a great choice, I have enough food for lunch the next day. If I just need a sandwich, the gyro is perfect. It is a family restaurant, near HEB, a close shot down Texas Ave from campus that I think somehow gets missed by the students, even though the prices are budget-friendly. The owner/chef is friendly and helpful and will help you navigate the menu and find what you would like. This restaurant is also easy for a vegetarian to find a good meal. My child has been eating here since she was little - one of her favorite places, because kids like dips and pita, and with the baba ganoush and hummus, I felt she was getting a good meal. read more

pretty yummy! A little quaint restaurant that's classically family run. When we entered, you could see the family front and center with the parents running the business and their two sons doing homework in the corner. we ordered the gyro sandwich and the Persian version definitely separated itself from the Greek version with the pita bread being less pillowy and more flat and firm and the contents varying except the gyro meat. I really enjoyed the garlic sauce that came with the large/long sandwich, which was the key that shined and tied the whole sandwich together. I also ordered the baba ganoush, which I describe best as the eggplant rendition of hummus. however, definitely not a fan of their baba ganoush. i usually love it, but at this restaurant, it just didn't go down right. read more

Zand's was absolutely fantastic! The food was delicious, our server was incredibly friendly and helped with all our needs. The chef even came out after some time to check up on us, make sure everything was good. They also kept bringing out little samples of sauce and such for us to try. If you go during lunch you get a free kebab with purchase of any platter. So if you get the mixed platter you can try all three meats. read more

During my time in Bryan as an intern, I had come here often after a fellow intern had introduced me to this place. Everyone here is friendly. They take the time to converse and personally thank you. I just cannot get enough of the lamb kubideh, which I have not been able to find anyone in Houston that comes close to the quality or freshness. The sauce is also unique and flavourful with the hint of garlic. After two years of being away, I stopped by on a whim and it is every bit as wonderful as I remember. Food - 4.5 stars Service - 2 stars I went to Zands with a couple friends today and it was almost empty. The chef's wife was the waitress and apparently if its your first time there she likes to be really sassy with you. At one point, I wanted to ask about a part of my order that hadn't come out with the rest of it, but I was nervous to do so because I genuinely thought the lady was going to be mad at me. Also, even with so few people, it took half an hour to get my first refill. The chef was very nice! He came out to check on us several times, which is what bumped the device review from 1 star to 2 stars. I imagine the device will be better next time, if she recognizes that it's my second time...if I go again, that is. The food was great. Lunch deals are awesome. I had the lamb gyro, fries and a drink and I was stuffed for around 12 bucks after tip. read more

I decided to try zands because of the good reviews here on yelp. I had the ground lamb kebab and the grilled salmon. The lamb was good, but the salmon was not, it wasn't seasoned and it was overcooked. (I asked for medium) The rice that came with the order was just plain white rice, which was underwhelming. The sauce that came with it was pretty good though. The dolma was fantastic! It was the best thing I had. The service was friendly, So I MAY give it another chance. read more
