I stopped by Zaman for lunch and was really impressed. The first thing I noticed was how fresh everything tasted. Nothing felt rushed or like it had been sitting around. We ordered the chicken shawarma, gyro, falafel with hummus, and baklava, and I'd happily order all of it again. The chicken shawarma was my favorite. The chicken was really flavorful, the garlic sauce was delicious, and the fresh pita tied everything together. I probably could've eaten an extra piece of pita by itself. The portions were also bigger than I expected, especially for the price. It's always nice finding a family-owned restaurant that clearly puts a lot of care into the food. Zaman is an awesome restaurant on the corner of Logan and Alameda. You can dine in or take out, but if you dine in, all meals are served with delicious lentil soup. We got the kibbeh appetizer and chicken shwarma plate. The portions here are huge, so our appetizer and entree was more than enough to feed two adults. The staff here is so nice. We discovered this Mediterranean restaurant by chance and glad that we did. The decor was clean and very tasteful. Seating was plentiful but parking was small. We chose to sit outside at one of the tables that had a fence full of pretty flowers. I chose the falafel with hummus sandwich that was fresh, crunchy, and tasty. Great comfy, informal place with fabulous Levantine food, most of which predated any national borders that exist in modern memory. There are regional differences, of course and this variation comes from Syria. The hummus and babaganoush were particularly creamy, likely due to extra tahini. Flavors were not hot, but were spicy and flavorful. The falafel differed from our local place outside of Philadelphia, where Turkish immigrants run the restaurant but is no less enjoyable. The baklava was loser, and servings larger, but how can you not like baklava? The pies were unique in my experience, but enjoyed by all. The pickles were outstanding. I was in the mood for Middle Eastern food when I walked into this restaurant, and I was immediately impressed. The service was incredibly friendly, the food was excellent, and the entire place was spotless. A clean bathroom is always a good sign of what's happening in the kitchen, and this place passed with flying colors. Everything is made fresh and tastes authentic. One of my many favorite dishes was the falafel and hummus -- they seriously should bottle and sell their hummus because the texture is unbelievably smooth and delicious. The kebbeh, tabbouleh, za'atar cheese pie, chicken, beef, kafta kabobs, and gyro were all fantastic. There were five of us, and the 4-Person Family Mix Grill was more than enough food. To top it all off, we had tea and Turkish coffee with their incredible baklava -- hands down the best I've ever had. You can actually watch them brew the Turkish sand coffee (hovoli) by burying a small coffee pot into hot sand heated over an open flame. It was such a treat to experience and watch. Service was mediocre at best but this place solid for its quality of food is not an overstatement. It was a to-go experience several days ago. It was mid-afternoon so the restaurant wasn't busy. We were quickly assisted once we had known what we'd wanted. The young lady who assisted wasn't really smiling; we really didn't sense any warmth from her either but she wasn't rude in anyway. One thing about this place is the pricey food. The Beef Shawarma plate - although its portion was more than decent is/was priced at $26 plus some change. Also, the grape leaves (contains 5-6) is/was priced at $13 with some change. I wish the prices were a bit lower. At home, my daughter and I immediately started eating our food. Yup, like I said, we weren't disappointed with the quality. They also gave us two oversized freshly made pita breads (came with the beef plate.) Well, I guess this explains why the steepness of the prices. All in all, the experience was good. I will utilize their business again for sure. First off they have bomb ass Humus and Baba ghanoush both are exemplary versions that do not go overboard on the flavorings....you know the kind that can be insanely smokie. First-time experience at Zaman, and I'll be glad to return. Hadn't eaten lunch and only had some coffee and a bit of yogurt for breakfast, so come 2 pm I was hunnngry. But the problem was my honey and I were meeting friends for an early dinner out and so I didn't want to ruin my appetite. Hence the question of what to do. Passed by Zaman and had seen some very good reviews of it and had the great thought: hey, maybe they sell appetizer sized portions of one of my favorite Middle Eastern dishes--baba ghanoush with a pita. I was thinking, maybe I could have a few bites of that and not spoil my appetite for dinner a little later. So that's what I did. I stopped on by and picked up a to-go order since they did have that on the menu and bingo...food problem solved. Didn't just like it. I loved it. The takeout here was good! It's nicely packed in a sturdy container with separators. Ordered a chicken shawarma plate and zataar and cheese pie. The plate is a generous serving of chicken over rice with tangy hummus and a salad of your choice. The pickled veg was a nice touch too. The rice was excellent and so flavorful! The chicken was dry, but I liked everything else on the plate. My dining companion really liked the zataar and cheese pie, but - for me - wasn't as fluffy as cheesy as I'd hoped. This particular restaurant is a cut above the rest in Denver. The pita bread makes others seem like just warm cardboard. Saffron rice which contains a full spectrum of flavors, as well as the creamy, flavorful, homemade hummus. The prices are a bit elevated, however, the Syrian culinary experience is truly impressive and absolutely worth it. The only thing that's more amazing than the presentation is the epic flavors given. It's been several months since my first visit. It was nice to see they are still in business. I noticed their prices have not increased. I started with an order of Kebbeh which is bulgur dough stuffed with minced beef, onions and spices served with Tzatziki sauce. Nice and hot. The Tzatziki sauce was a nice counterpoint. I got the Veggie Combo plate with Baba Ghanouj (eggplant with tahini, lemon & garlic), Hummus (chickpeas blended with tahini and lemon), small Mediterranean salad, stuffed grape leaves, Tabouleh (finely chopped parsley with tomato and onion) with a large portion of yellow rice all with a large round of pita bread. I got an extra salad with a complimentary cup of Lentil soup and mint flavored yogurt drink. Mayte C took my order and brought out my food. The Kebbeh took a little longer to arrive since the meat was cooked and blended before being stuffed in the dough and lightly fried. They do not have liquor license, but plenty of soft drinks including yogurt beverages. The mint flavored yogurt was good.
