We were welcomed upon walking in but that was pretty much the extent of the service we received. Besides taking our orders and dropping them off, our waters were never filled and it was a hot day with no/low air conditioning in the restaurant. Even when paying, the lady didn't say a word to us and was busy talking to someone on the phone. The restaurant also has a strong smell of old furniture which really bothered some of the people in our group. The food itself was decent. I enjoyed my Moroccan lamb shank enough and the chicken kabob was decent but one in our group ordered the lunch portion and it was like 3-4 small pieces of chicken. Overall, if you are really craving Mediterranean in the Wash Park area and don't feel like driving, getting some good to go here may not be a bad idea but service leaves a lot to be desired. read more

Le sigh. Usually I don't downgrade places (and I LOVE supporting local biz) but dang, we went here last week and I couldn't even make it through half of my meal And I was hungrrrrry. We stopped here for a quick bite before an Avalanche game since we were in the neighborhood. We should have known it wasn't a great idea since there was no one there and the guy working with sitting there eating. We sat, we ordered, we didn't wait too long. I wasn't feeling a platter or sandwich due to an meh experience here years ago so I decided to play it safe and get the baba ganoush. Bad idea. You know that taste in your mouth when you eat strawberries that are going bad and it's fizzy? Yep, it was that but in the form of baba ganoush. We were immediately greeted when we walked in. The vibe was nice and felt like walking into someone's home with the sofas against the walk and an older feel. I felt great being greeted by the nice lady at the front. Our food came out on the slower side given we were the only people in the entire place. I ordered your standard gyro and it was actually good along with the salad. However, we were never given an update on food or offered refills on our water. I was traveling all day and absolutely too tired to cook. Postmates to the rescue! I ordered the chicken kabob and a side of hummus. The kabob was flavored perfectly, it was cooked just slightly too long, but still delicious. The texture of the hummus was perfect, but I think they forgot to add lemon and salt. Our server never came back to check on us after the food was brought to our table. The hot tea that was brought to us prior to our order was too sweet. We attended an open house with a Mediterranean theme over the weekend. The last minute came, and we weren't ready, so we ordered from here. The sign still says Mecca Grill, but the ownership has obviously changed. Our chicken shawarma with rice and garlic sauce were tasty and popular, but the hostess (with too much food on her hands was sending everyone back with their food) kept the hummus! I've been hunting Denver for the best halaal chicken wrap. I'm used to the kind obtainable from roadside trailers. Austin had some pretty good ones. I had an errand to run, in the Cheesman Park area, then afterwards, I had a hankerin for halaal, and Mecca Grill was the nearest halaal place. The interior of the place was respectably decorated, and my server was friendly. I asked for a chicken wrap, but the closest thing they had was chicken shawarma with a pita, veggies, hummus, and rice. Close enough. The food was quite good. Working in the persian gulf and having visited many Arab countries, I got to experience lots of good middle eastern food. So I'm always on the lookout for that special taste. Unfortunately, this place was disappointing. The food was simply average. It lacked flavor and originality. The restaurant needs a desperate makeover. My chair was dirty and broken. The decor is old and musty. The service was very slow. Our server was also the cook, so we waited a long time for our food. However, the gentleman was very friendly and kind. I believe it is important to support local businesses. Now more than ever they need our help. So I will go back and hope for a better experience. FRIDAY MARCH 5th 2010 : A couple of weeks before the event, I went to Mecca Grill for a visit in order to make a reservation in person. On the actual day, when I arrived at about 18:45hrs ish, our table was ready for our group as part as a Lebanese Dinner Galore thru (I.C.E) meetup. We were given the menu and water promptly. To me, the menu or what they offer is kind of limited. But, the price of the food they offer is reasonable. By 19:00hrs some of my members order some Appetizers such as : * Hummus * Falafel * Tabouli 19:15hrs, the Appetizers came for the group. About this time, we were ready to make our order for our Main Entrees. At 19:40hrs, since I order the Lamb Shank, my order came with the Hummus with Pita bread. Since I have been starving, I ate my Hummus and Pita bread while waiting for my Main Entree to be ready. By 19:47hrs, the first Entree came for the group. If I could recall correctly, here are the Entrees of what my friends ordered that evening : * Hummus With Shawarma ~ this entree, my fren opt for Chicken. * 2 orders of the Meat Combo. * Gyros Plate ~ this entree comes with Slices of Beef and Lamb. * Falafel Sandwich * Chicken Sultani * Chicken Shawarma * Chicken Kabob About 20:00hrs then my Main Entree arrived. My main Entree was A-OK. I feel there werent any much flavor and my friends agreed to this statement. I think I am spoiled with the food I have had at another establishment sometime back in September 2009. To my better judgement, when I order my Lamb Shank, I order TO GO BOX of MEAT COMBO for Hubs. Since we are the biggest group that evening, it takes awhile for all the food to be ready. I want to support this establishment, so that is why I choose to bring my friends here for dinner but they fall short in certain areas. A little let down of disappointment. Perhaps the service could differ if we came here on a weekday night, instead of a FRIDAY. So if you want to bring a BIG group, please have LOTS of patience, since the service and the food will take a while to be ready. Above anything else, its the COMPANY that counts that evening for me. When I bring home the MEAT COMBO for Hubs, Hubs did not like it at all. Its pretty bland for him too. I also purchase some BAKLAVAS TO GO. Man, this thing is MIGHTY TASTY, and its slightly expensive for $2 a piece. Mecca Grill, I hope you can prosper in many years to come. I know its tough to open a restaurant in this difficult time. I'm pretty unhappy with my order via Postmates tonight. Specifically requested no lettuce, received a gyro with no cucumbers, no onions and a bunch of wilted warm lettuce. Tried to call the restaurant 4 times, phone never answered and no voicemail. It's really irritating because this happens all the time and Postmates blames the restaurant and the restaurant (if the ever answer) blames Postmates. I'm tired of it. I was happy to find this hidden gem near downtown. They have very good food! I've never had Lebanese food before. It was a lot like your typical Greek food, but with a little more spices. Good portions and fast, friendly service. Their dolmas were the best I've ever had. I couldn't figure out if the falafels were gluten free (he couldn't understand what i was asking), but they look like they're not. Salad was yummy. Excellent yogurt sauce and seasoned basmati. The gyros were a bit dry. I'll definitely be back to try more items, but I'd say this is my favorite gyro place in Denver. It's a good place for kids. We went there at 6:30 on a Saturday night, and I usually avoid taking my kids out to dinner at prime time. The restaurant was empty though. It seems like everybody else was getting their food to go. I had the Meat Combo ($10.95) which turned out to be one of the best I have ever tasted - the generous portions of various meats were lean, succulent and perfectly-spiced (the cubes of marinated chicken breast were exceptionally good). The accompanying rice was steamy-hot and buttery, and the salad was fresh and crisp (the Italian dressing liberally slathered on top was a bit weird, but who cares). His Vegetarian Combo was also tasty (I'm not a big falafel fan but theirs were especially amazing) and, at $8.95, was a great deal. Our server was MIA for most of the meal but the cook guy was super friendly and helpful. Like a lot of strip mall restaurants, this place doesn't look much from the outside but it's cute and cozy inside. Prices are crazy reasonable too (entrees $9-$11; sandwiches $3-$4). This place is closer to a 3.5 than 3.0 but fell a bit short of my standards. I had the lamb kabob and I thought it was alright. It could have been a bit juicier for my liking but it was a bit too chewy, too. I had the baba ganoush and it was pretty good. I thought the pita was dry and it was disappointing that it was not home made. The taboulleh was good as well but not excellent. I have lived near a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants so my expectations are pretty high. In general, I thought this was okay and probably pretty good for most who haven't had it before. I didn't like that I was nickel-and-dimed a bit (i.e. taboulleh wasn't included) and I felt like the food was just lacking a little something that would make it memorable and irresistible not to come back. Instead, I left thinking that I'd be fine finding another place. We came a little bit before the dinner crowd so we sat outside. This place is situated in a strip mall with pretty limited parking but they did a good job with the space they had to put a little patio outside. The food was really good. Thanks to a restaurant.com gift certificate from my mom (who randomly chose it from the web site--she's never been to CO), we got to experience Mecca Grill. Otherwise, I doubt we'd ever have found ourselves at that intersection or noticed this place tucked in the back of a strip mall. It's a sparsely decorated room, very casual. There was no music at first, then a loop of Enya songs (not even the entire album--we heard "How Can I Keep from Singing" several times). But it didn't matter, because the food was great. We didn't realize that everyone gets salad, hummus, and pita when you sit down (or at least that's how it seemed). We orderd fava beans and tabbouleh to start. I assumed the favas would be foul mudammas, a dish I love. It was different from other versions I've had, but delicious in its own right. It was tart from lots of lemon and had plenty of flavor despite being a relatively simple dish. The tabbouleh was heavy on the curly parsley with just a bit of bulghur and a nice mint flavor. Note on portions: each appetizer seems designed to feed about four people. We had a minimum for our coupon, so we ordered more food than necessary. But we had plenty of food to take home and enjoy as another meal. We shared two entrees (well, we actually brought home most of it since it the other food was pretty filling). The meat combo was served on rice and came with cucumber-yogurt dip and more salad (their dressing is excellent!). It had a bit of everything: kabob beef, lamb and chicken, some shawarma, and a kofti kabob (ground meat that is grilled). The kofti and the chicken kabob were standouts. The other entree was chicken shawarma w/hummus. We didn't realize we'd get hummus to start or that shawarma came on the combo. But it was delicious nonetheless. Whew! We stopped eating because we knew we'd need to order dessert or coffee to reach our minimum (should have brought friends!) for the coupon. The Turkish coffee was interesting. It was sweet and had flavor, but it still tasted a little weak, almost watered down. There wasn't as much of the coffee sediment as I usually find when I order it. Not bad, just different. The baklava was heavy on cinnamon and very wet with honey. Good stuff. Service was a little awkward. Our server seemed nervous and came back to confirm our order. We pre-bussed our own table, stacking appetizer plates and glasses at the edge of the table to make room for the entrees we shared. Appetizer and entree plates were finally cleared after dessert was served. Prices were quite reasonable. Normally I'd order a vegetarian combo as my entrees, but at $8.95 I knew we'd have a hard time reaching our minimum purchase for our coupon. But I also knew I could come back for an inexpensive and hearty meal that is way better for me than a $10 pub burger. In all, we got quality food at a great price. Definitely worth a visit. It might even be a good place for takeout, since I think Lebanese food can travel well (unlike most other foods, in my opinion--I've got takeout issues). Hook to the left, Shank to the right. At least that's how it goes in golf. At Mecca Grill, the Lamb Shank is the right thing to order. Lamb is my gauge for every Middle Eastern restaurant, with stuffed grape leaves (dolmades, dolmas or equivalent) a close second. Here I ordered both, apples to apples with Damascus. The shank was most excellent, a bit spicier than at Jerusalem or other some other local haunts, if a tad smaller. It's no secret that the menu looks like one or two other M.E. restaurants in town, the guy in the kitchen had a hand in creating a couple of them. The night I went, I had wonderful conversation with the Moroccan waitress, since I went at a late hour - it was almost as if we were dining together. I found out there is a sizable Lebanese, Palestinian, Jordanian and North African community here in whitey-Denver. It's not just the Eritrian and Somali cab drivers that take you to the airport. The all-important good, the less good, and the improvement list: GOOD: The hummus was fantastic, and the shank very, very commendable. A powerful combo. A Mighty Win. The LESS GOOD: The grape leaves were unremarkable, kind of soggy. I didn't get the impression that they'd been made recently. The pita was kind of stiff, and otherwise unworthy of praise. They were not the "tight and lemony" I was expecting. The NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: The atmosphere was "tried and foun' wantin'", meaning that the tables were sterile, the floors were sterile, and the lighting was sterile. I don't really recall any killer music. I hate to say it, and this will sound completely odd, but, the place should have been a little, um - dirtier. And I mean that in the nicest way. You could go into any Johnny Rockets and have your bacteria Geiger counter never ping above zero. Conversely, the Cherry Cricket would go off the scale, and you'd die if your mouth touched the floor. Everyone knows how awesome the Cherry Cricket is, but part of its lustre is its lack of lustre. Mecca will do well with a more broken-in look and feel. read more

Love this little place! It's a hidden gem. I have craved the kind of pita wraps I used to get at halal carts in NYC and this is the best I've found in Denver! Their meats are all so delicious, and their sandwiches come with really tasty tzaziki dressing and are really reasonably priced. Their baba ghanoush and falafel are really good too. It's a small restaurant, so when we order we usually just walk in and wait for our food, I haven't tried getting delivery.
