Was driving across Michigan and found this spot outside of Ann Arbor. You walk in and order at the counter, the menu is easy to read and the worker gave us great recommendations. The Shish Tawook were juicy marinated chunks of chicken breast served with rice, garlic sauce and pita bread. Eating all 3 together was so amazing! Really great, medium rare beef shish kabob- so flavorful. Really good charbroiled (chicken) shish tawook. Good kufta as well. It also has a good amount of roast green pepper and tomatoes. I ordered the shish combo, to go, which was --though a splurge-- a good value for the amount of food you get, and (for me) enough for two (meaty) meals. The salad that came with it was a fattoush. We were very excited to go to a Persian restaurant we had never been to before- Zamaan Persian-Mediterranean Grill 865 W Eisenhower Pkwy, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. The name says Persian, the website lists Persian dishes, the pictures in the window show Persian food, and they were playing Persian music. Much to our surprise the menu we were presented with had NO PERSIAN food on it. It was only the typical Lebanese type middle eastern food found at most middle eastern restaurants. We walked in an hour to closing and not really expecting much but wanting a quick bite. The guy at the cash register warmly welcomed us and asked what we would like. We stuck to our usual middle eastern restaurant order: chicken shawarma and a falafel sandwich. I have had takeout twice and the food is delicious . Both times I have ordered beef plate with rice and grilled tomatoes and bell peppers and Greek salad, the hummus is delicious. The pieces of beef are big chunks and they are very tasty and it's not cheap cuts of beef. Everything on my plate was seasoned perfectly, who ever does the cooking is great. I don't know where Elizabeth Z ate, but it's definitely not Zaaman Café. it sounds like she was out for revenge or something. I have never had anything but excellent food and friendly service. I think like many restaurants after the pandemic they may not have as many workers so if it's busy, it might take a little longer to get served. But I've never been there when it was super busy and I've been served . I have never seen any in unhygienic signs in the restaurant. I don't have any personal steak in this restaurant, but I saw the one rating and the absolutely unhinged review and I just want people to know that that is not all accurate based on my experience. I've done takeout here before but last week was my first time dining in and it was a great experience. It's casual dining at its finest with comfortable booths and a welcoming staff. I'm a bit of a creature of habit these days and tend to go with a tawook plate whenever I'm out at a Middle Eastern restaurant and Zamaan makes a great one. Perfectly charred chicken, delicious toum (garlic sauce), and the rice is lightly spiced and herbed. And the hummus appetizer is creamy and heavy on the tahini, which I like. I like to take my plate and basically make mini sandwiches of all the goodness. Take some pita, add some rice, chicken, garlic sauce, veggies and a touch of hummus. My friend pointed out that they have a sandwich on the menu that is basically that (the Riz Bi Dajaj) which intrigued me for the future. But for now, I like to build my own. Prices are great and service is speedy. It's location in a strip mall on Eisenhower also makes it easy to park. One of my favorite Middle Eastern options in Ann Arbor, hands down. read more

This was the first time I ordered from here and I 100% will be back. Such great food and service.

Food is greasy, dingy, and bland. No hospitality. Bad service, infested, and unhygienic. Fruit flies, earwigs, and grime. Unsanitary-- new food, dirty dishes, and baby bottoms go on the same counter. You'd better have a strong immune system. Prepare to be stared at with zero service unless you ask for everything, piece by piece. We are middle eastern (multinational) and very disappointed. We sat down. After many minutes of the employee staring, I got up from my seat and went to the counter, and I said "hi" .... Silence... no response greeting, no questions, not offering anything. I ask for waters. I sat back down, and they holler at you to come to the counter to pick up the waters, with their hands on the rim of the glass. Then they go back into the kitchen and don't offer a menu or anything. More waiting, then you have to ask for menus-- 2 people are expected to share one paper menu. The cheapness continues with almost no chicken in any of the dishes we got, and tabbouli was underdressed and watery. Regular salad is just a few large shreds of iceberg lettuce drowned in dressing that flows into the entree on the same paper plate. Their menu is wrong on what's included, but they intentionally keep it that way instead of printing new ones. Paper plates. You have to ask for a fork (plastic). No knives, so you're left struggling with the large leaves. Garlic sauce tastes old, like it has been absorbing dust and flavors in an old refrigerator. The only initiative they take is to reach their hand out to get the menus back --no words, just more starting. It's like they don't want you there, and I'm happy to oblige. read more

This is a very good spot for Middle Eastern fare in the southern Ann Arbor commercial area on Eisenhower near AA-Saline Rd. Located in the aging Colonnade Strip Plaza, this diminutive restaurant with its simple but comfortable decor provides a pleasant atmosphere for a nice meal. We have eaten here two or three times now and have found the service to be fairly accommodating. On this Friday evening, we had originally planned to eat in one of the restaurants in the new plaza on Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. in front of Meijer, but the crowds there were still horrendous at 8 PM. A quick check of Yelp highlighted several spots nearby. This place stood out based on our mood and it turned out to be much more sedate. There were four or five other parties there when we walked in and it was no problem to find a seat. We started with a Baladi Hummus appetizer, which was topped with feta, tomatoes, onions and cilantro and included pita for dipping. For mains, we tried the Shish Kabob pita accompanied by fries and the Shish Tawook dinner with rice. Both were quite good. The fries were particularly tasty as they were medium cut and well done. With tax and tip (we had water to drink), our final cost was $33. At $16.50 per person, this was a reasonable deal. This was especially true considering the fact that we brought home enough leftovers for another meal. Overall, we were once again pleased to try this establishment. We will be happy to patronize this place again when another opportunity arises. read more

Pretty solid hummus and spinach pie! Prices are very fair for the quality. I was pleasantly surprised. (Half the price of Palm Palace!) Just two cons to note: they don't have homemade pita bread and I ordered cold veggies to go with the hummus.... They mostly gave me cauliflower and green peppers - yuck! The bread isn't a huge deal to me and I just won't order the veggies anymore... I do look forward to trying more menu items in the future. read more

I don't know how I had never heard of this place before, but this place was easily one of the best mediterranean restaurants i've been to in A2. I'd say it's dishes rivals the best of haifa falafel, and their dishes are all consistently fantastic. We got the karnabeet, baladi, meat shwarma wrap, grape leaves, and mujaddara wrap. While all were superb, I was particularly impressed by the karnabeet. The sauteed cauliflower reminded me vaguely of the charred taste of kale chips, but infinitely better - and this is coming from someone who typically isn't a fan of veggies. Prices were fair, but not a steal. All this place needs now is to move itself closer to downtown. Would come again. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. I finally had a chance to do so while on route to Detroit and had a great lunch. I decided to try their chicken shawarma wrap and my taste buds were throughly satisfied. It was quite flavorful and had the right amount of salt. The owner was very nice as he took my order. After debating where to eat for our weekly dinner, we opted to stay close to home by going to Zamaan Cafe. I got there early and the place was empty... two tables were occupied and they were just finishing eating their dinner. There's only one waiter that manages the tables, cash machine, orders, etc... since we were the only table, it didn't take long to get our orders in... I went with Falafel and got the Shish Kabob (beef) with the tabbuleh salad. The 2nd best falafel I had in long time... they were hot and delicious. Our orders all came out at different times... there were like five minute gap between each dish, even though there were two folks working in the kitchen. I was the last person to get my food... The beef was moist... the ends were little burnt, but still decent. The rice I got was cranberry rice... it was mixed in with the almond rice. The beef was still juicy, easy to cut... and if you ask for hot sauce, they will give you some. While we were eating, more customers came and since only one person was working, it took little while to get our bill. Otherwise, the waiter did his best and all to get us going. Overall, not bad of a place for middle eastern joint... plenty of parking and easy access to the location. read more

My new favorite middle eastern restaurant in A2. Not as fancy aesthetic as Palm Palace, but the food is better and the owners are wonderful.

Previously, I had had carry out from the Zamaan on Plymouth Road at a friend's house and I didn't think that it was that good. Since the carry out was dry and cold, I was interested in dining in at this location. I went for lunch and had a cup of the lentil soup with warm pita and the classic gyro. I also had the cinnamon tea which was Fantastic. The food was good and I really liked the size (and price under $6 and you can add a Greek salad or fries for a combo price) of the gyro. Some big eaters might find the gyro not filling enough but I like eating a more reasonably-sized gyro and getting other things with it. My friend said that her Greek salad was very good. Total bill for lunch for two was just over $20 plus tip. The decor inside was nice and not too casual, nor too fancy. Our food arrived quickly. The people who worked here were really nice and friendly. read more

Got the Greek salad with gyro meat (instead of chicken which is how it's offered on the menu) a little disappointed the olives we're not Greek olives just black. Also the lettuce was cut up in chunks not broken apart. But overall a decent salad I liked the gyro meat on it. The salad also came with a side of the yogurt dip which was nice to put on the meat. My husband had a chicken wrap which was a little dry but flavorful. It came with fires which were nice and crunchy. They have highchairs for kids which was nice, and a changing table in the women's bathroom (not sure if there was one in the men's also but they are just single stall) Overall decent, I might try some of the other Mediterranean places around before I head back to this one. read more

This is definitely a veggie lovers paradise. I had to try the much lauded karnabeet. I had not tasted it before and I am a sucker for cauliflower. Oh man. So good. Lightly fried with delicious sauce. I could easily eat this as a main. The tabouli was also happily tasty, super fresh and light. Terrific traditional style falafel, very satisfying and filling. To go with our app graze we each had a bowl of lentil soup which had good texture and a nice pop of lemonyliciousness to it. Atmosphere is casual. Service was friendly. No major glitches or anything. I will return with a meat eater to explore my more carnivorous side. Definitely interested to try more for sure. read more

Hard to give a broad overview of this place because I order the exact same thing every time. I ordered the Karnabeet the first time I came here because it was one of the few items on the menu that was nearly carb free. However, even if I was to sway from my low carb lifestyle, I would still order this every time! Perfectly roasted cauliflower over a bed of lettuce and tomatoes, topped with tahini and pomegranate seeds. It is listed as an appetizer, but it it more than enough for a meal for one. Two different colleagues of mine have come with me and have sampled items from the entrée side and were very happy with their results. Ann Arbor has some amazing food! read more

The Baba Ghanoush is a must order for an appetizer/side order, etc. It is spectacular...and it wasn't just because I was hungry. Here for lunch, so tried a cup of Lentil soup followed by a Chicken Shawarma wrap. The lentil soup was good, but too salty. Thumbs up on the chicken schwarma wrap. Filled with their own Marinated chicken, char-griiled, and stuffed along with veggies, pickles and a very delicious garlic sauce. Others in the group got the Chicken gyros which they have very high marks. Though I passed on the fries, I couldn't help to not try some. They are extremely delicious...so beware! And the cinnamon tea, which was new to me, was just what I needed to go with my chicken shwarma. We ordered a side of mujadara( smething made out of lentils), sheesh tawook and chicken kebabs. It was Delicious!! Also, their portions are: small plate comes wth two skewers and large plate cones with 3 skewers plus a salad and rice. We also got their honey coconut cake and their walnut baklava. If ur counting ur calories, then desserts here arent for you.. Lol I would come back again. I also expressed how disappointed i was on my first dine in experience to the owner and he patiently listened and apologized. Great customer service!! As long as its bn acknowledged!! This place is more like the traditional Middle Eastern food like they have in Dearborn (not like what you get next to campus - which is way too Americanized). The people working there are super friendly and helpful. When I was there the last time, there were a couple elderly ladies (one with a walker) and it was POURING. They wanted to leave during this time, so I offered to help them out and the people working there brought out umbrellas to help too. Very nice encounter and the food is darn good too! :) I get the tabbouli with some shawarma meat on it... so so good. The guy wonders what I'm doing though, so I'm guessing that is not how they would eat it. Oh well, I love it! The prices are a bit higher than Dearborn, of course, but that's what you expect in A2 (much higher rent). But overall, this is my go-to place when I'm in A2 and want some lunch and/or carry-out. read more

Oh, Zamaan. What happened to you? The familiar faces have been all replaced, and nothing tastes right. I believe they are under new ownership. Zamaan was a solid bet in our family for really great food, friendly staff, and a quiet environment. Everything used to taste fresh and bright with loads of flavor. We visited last night, not knowing about the ownership change. The menu was exactly the same, but the food definitely was not. I ordered tabouli, hummus With chicken, and garlic sauce. I will say that the chicken was very nicely done, moist and seasoned properly. That's where the compliments end. The tabouli tasted like it had been made with old oil, the garlic sauce barely had garlic flavor to it, and the hummus was practically flavorless as well. I was so very disappointed. My wife's gyro was dry and disappointing as well. We used to come to this place probably at least three times a month. Based on last nights meal, I don't think we will be going back.
