I've hesitated a while, writing this review because I figured 'no harm no foul', and what Dr. Zaki…read moredidn't do to me is not my problem. But I'm sitting here going through old paperwork and I can't help but wonder how many times since I didn't write this, Dr. Zaki has performed a surgery that caused undue pain, trauma, or probably worse, because some poor victim looked him up online and didn't see this review or any other documentation about Dr. Zaki's misgivings. The short of it is this-- I had been approved by my insurance for an umbilical hernia surgery, and all of the surgeons on my plan had a several month wait to even get an initial visit...except for Dr. Zaki. It's a fairly common procedure so I was willing to overlook a lot of red flags (more on that later if you care to read) to just hurry up and get it over with. But as Dr. Zaki started talking me through the procedure and the recovery, it left me with more questions than answers. He described a long and grueling a recovery process where I wouldn't be able to work out for at least 6 months, wouldn't be able to carry anything over 5 pounds for 3 months, there would be a second procedure to remove the drainage tube (a freakin drainage tube?!?) that I would basically have to sponge bath around for 8 weeks until the second procedure. It all seemed like a lot for something that tons of people -- young/old, men/women, athletes -- undergo every day without ever really talking about how gnarly the recovery is. So I started asking these questions: "6 months seems like a really long time, don't athletes get these surgeries all the time without interrupting there lives like this? They get a hernia and don't train for half of a year?" And Dr. (short for DOCTOR) Zaki said with his gut hanging over his belt, "Why do you need to work out? I don't work out, look at me." And then he eventually negotiated it down to 3 months. Uhhh. Wutttt?? Then there was the conversation about the mesh. I had done a lot of research and saw that mesh comes with a lot of potential hazardous complications and most importantly that it stays inside of you forever. I really didn't want to do mesh but he refused to do the surgery any other way. This is, by the way, without him having done any real diagnosis on the hernia itself, which was, BY THE WAY, very small. So I held out for an appointment with a different surgeon. In my consult with that doctor he said he would rarely if ever use a mesh, and he would never ever do it for a hernia as minor as mine. So then I asked him about the drainage tube...he couldn't even wrap his head around why I was asking him, because it's just not something he would EVER do for this kind of procedure. So when I asked him why any other surgeon like Dr. Zaki would insist on this sort of thing he just said, "Money." Because as it goes, if I have to go back again to get something removed (that didn't need to be there in the first place), the surgeon gets paid again. And seriously, it seems like Dr. Zaki needs every visit he can get. His "office" is a bungalow with no employees, no computers, boxes stacked on boxes stacked on boxes, one medical table, a fax machine, and a completely ramshackled desk chair that Dr. Zaki will proudly tell you he's been sitting in since the 80's. I do feel bad writing this review because it seems like Dr. Zaki genuinely needs the business. But what he tried to do to me -- installing hardware into my body, despite my protest, that was going to severely compromise my health and potentially cause permanent damage -- I don't know what the legal grounds are for malpractice so I can't say that, but at the very least it's highly unconscionable.

After seeing many doctors for many years, multiple doctors were only interested in managing my care instead of curing me. I was impressed with her statement. Dr. Carlos worked with her, and I had many meetings as they were very thorough in their approach to curing me. I stayed at their clinic over the weekend and took their 55-minute infusion. Instantly after they took the needle out of my arm, my body said "MOVE," and I did just that. I ran upstairs and downstairs all over the clinic with no pain, running, cart wheeling, IN NO PAIN AT ALL LIKE BEFORE THIS HAPPENED, all in amazement. I took to their infusion because I had read all 20 pages of their medical contract before I signed their contract. I agreed to the treatments because it has no side effects or deaths in the study. The staff was magnificent and extended me every professional courtesy. Dr. Hazen checked in and was present during my infusion, with her staff performing the infusion. I was unaware of the paid trial, nor did I care; I just wanted to be cured. The trial payment was under $1,500.00 plus an extra round figure of $500.00 because the brand new machine they ordered malfunctioned, and I was asked to stay an additional day waiting for another new machine to be delivered the next day, and continue the trial infusion. It works immediately. They are very thorough with blood tests, urine weights documentation, and sending you to other outside doctors for their continued treatments, making sure I was healthy to take the infusion and all other related tests. This infusion took away 95% of my inflammation and pain and got rid of all other ailments. I was back to normal, playing tennis, golf, running, Santa Monica, Echo Park and Culver City stairs, rollerblading, riding my bicycle, horseback riding, and all sports I played before this. I was back to normal, which was unbelievable. The infusion trial worked and lasted 4 months. I saw Dr. Hazen regularly, as she was always kindly overseeing my treatments; she would pop in to check on me and was concerned about my overall health. She was always smiling and happy, and so was her staff. Everyone was so excited to see me in my regular state, always asking me how I felt and how I was doing. Everyone worked in beautiful concert together like clockwork, every dedicated and educated in their medical craft and career. The offices were always clean and the bathrooms too. My last day, after my infusion and a few follow up appotents I stopped by a local bakery and bought Dr Hazen and her staff 2 boxes of designed cookies. Dr. Hazen kindly asked me to place them in their break room in the back for their staff. Her elderly parents work with her and have offices next to her on the 2nd floor. THIS WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD! I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ANYONE WHO IS IN NEED TOO! To this day, many years later, I have the best relationship with Dr. Hazen. I email her often to let her know how I am doing. She found my cure a drug called Morphotek, which I have tracked for 10-15 years all over the world, and now the USDA has approved it for sale in theh UDA nd I shall have my doctor prescribe it for me to finish with the 100% total cure of my medical condition. The office has a fair appearance, but when I looked around I noticed that they are still in boxes. They have been at 5800 Wilshire for the past two years and they are still unpacked which to me is unbelievable and very unprofessional. Her staff is fairly nice, but seemed tense and overworked. Well, the whole office seems unruly and all over the place so unhappy staff members are not a surprise. When I first met her, she walked into the exam room wearing stilettos and a bright red dress under her [white doctors'] coat as if she were still wearing the same outfit from her previous night out. She spent an adequate amount of time talking to me about my medical history and made sure I was healthy before she prescribed me any medication which seemed to be a good sign. Unfortunately a week after I started taking the medication, I began to feel ill due to severe side effects. I then had a hard time contacting and scheduling an appointment for follow up with her so I made my own decisions in regards to discontinuing the medication [which I really don't recommend without consulting a physician as it is dangerous and a major risk to one's health]. But when I finally got a hold of them and made an appointment, she did not even see me! She had her PA [physicians assistant] see me and run tests. I ultimately terminated our "doctor/patient" relationship during my second visit. It upsets me very much that she, as a physician did not seem to have interest in [healing/helping] her patients. Not only that, but she didn't seem to have a good relationship with her staff either. I heard crude comments, saw two of her nurses crying, heard her shout from her office and witnessed her fire someone. I guess she's not much of a people's person and I could understand people's disposition against her. As for my health, I do not feel confidence or comfort in her being my physician due to her lack of interest in both my health and well being.

There are many providers out there who claim to have the knowledge, training, and demeanor to fully address the needs of their transgender patients. Having carefully vetted several, however, not all claims allayed my concerns. For example, several surgeons claiming to have the knowledge and experience to address their trans patients needs use outdated and inflammatory terminology when discussing the trans experience. Others refuse to work with insurance companies, or they lack a full appreciation for the multi-disciplinary approach transgender medicine requires. But my concerns regarding identifying a skilled, thoughtful, and experienced provider were completely eliminated after I met Doctor Hadeed. Doctor Hadeed is a caring and thoughtful provider. He's a strong advocate for his transgender patients, and he and his staff work tirelessly to ensure patience receive their medically necessary care. Dr Murrell had two nurses to go over everything before the procedures and if I was a little younger, both of them would have to become my friends. Dr Murrell is cool and handsome, so beware...I heard the little mature woman in the private area next to me letting him know...Lol!!!! After my surgery the two nurses once again made me feel warm and relaxed, and then the doctor came out to greet me to let me know he had found nothing. It's taken me a long time to share my experience because what I went through under Dr. Murrell's care was deeply traumatic. Writing this brings up PTSD, but I feel an obligation to speak up in the hope that it might protect others. Dr. Murrell initially came across as confident and smooth-talking, which is why I trusted him. I now deeply regret that decision. He told me he didn't accept insurance and required full payment upfront. I paid out of pocket using our savings. After surgery, I received a separate hospital bill for several hundred thousand dollars, including charges I was told would be covered. The bill was eventually waived, only after I required a second corrective surgery -- a possible indication that the hospital recognized something had gone wrong. I originally sought care for a bowel resection following a diverticulitis-related micro-perforation. Before the scheduled resection, Dr. Murrell performed a colonoscopy that perforated my colon and resulted in hospitalization for sepsis and peritonitis. I was placed on IV antibiotics via a PICC line for 3 weeks. During this time, Dr. Murrell left for vacation and was unreachable. The hospital ultimately had to intervene to adjust my care. I felt abandoned and seriously unwell. The resection surgery that followed was 10 hours long. I woke up in extreme pain. I was hospitalized for two weeks and left unable to stand. My blood pressure dropped dangerously low, and I was bruised black across my genital area. My mother, a nurse, raised concerns that were dismissed. I was discharged in a wheelchair -- still bleeding and barely able to function. The following two months were a nightmare. I could barely have bowel movements, even with 8-10 laxatives a day. I was in constant pain, using a cane, losing weight, unable to eat or sleep. ER imaging showed internal bleeding, 2 rectoceles, and a potential stricture -- all dismissed as "normal healing." Dr. Murrell said he'd only perform a follow-up if full payment was received upfront for another colonoscopy. I told his office I didn't trust him to do that again, but agreed to a free in-office sigmoidoscopy. He told me everything looked fine. I was back in the ER shortly after. An ER doctor later told me Dr. Murrell had insisted to their team that he was the "colorectal expert," and my concerns were dismissed accordingly. MRI and lab results were ignored. I was terrified and knew I was being denied care. My mother, still by my side and advocating as a medical professional, continued logging my symptoms. Even she was ignored, despite clear signs that my condition was deteriorating. During surgery, Dr. Murrell also told me he had done me a "favor" by detaching my uterus from the abdominal wall -- a decision never discussed with me beforehand. He said he had "hooked me up free of charge." That so-called favor led to my uterus collapsing and fusing to my bladder, causing severe chronic pain and urinary issues. I eventually had to undergo surgery to have it removed. In sheer desperation, I was forced to leave California because every ER I went to deferred to Dr. Murrell and dismissed me because he kept insisting I was ok. I had to get out of his reach just to find someone who would listen. Out-of-state, I was finally taken seriously. They performed an 11-hour surgery, where they found a severe stricture and necrotic bowel-- direct complications from the previous surgery. If I had stayed under Dr. Murrell's care, I would not be alive. I now live with long-term complications and physical deformity from what was supposed to be a healing procedure. The emotional, physical, and financial toll has been devastating. To Dr. Murrell, if you're reading this: Please listen to your patients. A good surgeon doesn't stop at the operating room. Your lack of follow-through, empathy, and accountability nearly cost me my life. Not everything is about money. Patient experience and safety matter. To others: Trust your instincts. Get second opinions. Ask hard questions. Be your own advocate--or bring someone who will. I'm sharing this because no one should have to suffer like I did

I want to give a big thank you to the team at Align who are working so hard to ensure that trans people get the care they need. This is a tough job - fighting with insurance companies, hospitals, and all the other people who want to deny us care. Not a lot of people have been willing to go to bat for me in my journey, but Align certainly has. In particular, I want to shoutout Priscilla, the surgery coordinator/patient navigator for Dr. Mittermiller. Priscilla is on the front line dealing with the hospitals and surgery centers that are making it impossible to get surgery dates scheduled. If not for her, no dates would be scheduled at all. She has taken the time to speak with me and reassure me about the process and I know she is doing all she can for every patient. After speaking with Priscilla, I felt more assured that my surgery would happen than I had felt at any other point. Priscilla is a star and so are all the lovely people she works with. The team at Align have a tough job of delivering bad news to patients, but they are far more responsible for the good news patients receive, even if those patients don't know it. This is a team that truly cares about the trans community and, despite how tough the day-to-day might get, they never give up. I hope they see this review to know that they are very appreciated. If you want a team that is going to fight for you and your right to receive car, this is the place to go. he was very nice in the initial consult but botched my nose job and wouldn't take responsibility…read morefor it he also talked down to me, made weird and unwanted comments about my gender, was uncomfortably familiar. after the first couple consults I made a point to make sure a female friend was in the room with me and when there was a third person present he seemed better at controlling himself. I could have put up with the abuse and the weird stuff with boundaries he has if the work was good, but if you are considering him there's a 99% chance your insurance have you a list of no name surgeons they cover and this is one of your only options. if you care about your face and want someone better than the c list guys medicaid or whoever stick you with, spend the money on someone who can actually show you before and after pics of their work (he doesn't and I kind of don't blame him, considering). if you get stuck with this guy because if insurance, just make sure to always have someone present if you don't want him to get weird towards you. I still can't breath through my nose and insurance actually covered a full revision of all his barely noticeable work with someone who knew what they were doing and respected me as a person and wasn't so transphobic about everything. the new face is what I actually wanted and I wish I would have listened when I heard the stories about this creep. in a better society he wouldn't be allowed to practice or be allowed near trans women but this is what you get us you're stuck in medicaid, ya know?
