The lake itself is tidal & has very well manicured gardens and beautifully paved sidewalks. It's the ideal location for running or walking. They also have well place benches to just soak up the sun or fresh air. The peace & quiet is great. I'm ashamed to say it was my first time really exploring this area of Charleston. I'll definitely return here again. Lovely

Could use a little more shade areas, but maybe they're thinking that when some of the items grow larger, that'll help. We walked the 1.5-mile nature trail that leads from a field, through the woods, to the river, back through the woods, and to another field. There were several hills on this trail which were fun to traverse. Bring your heavy-duty backwoods bug spray; the mosquitoes and biting flies are relentless and semi-immune to even large quantities of DEET. (Welcome to the Lowcountry, travelers.) We took out pup down for a dip in the Edisto River along the tube/kayak/canoe launch area. The little beach and river area were busy and full of people, but we still had a good time. I'd love to come back on a less busy weekend to relax in the river. Unfortunately, our dog had to stay on leash even in the river (according to posted signage), so that hindered her ability to water-retrieve. I noticed many campsites available for rent; we may look into this option for the fall. GFSP is an excellent option if you're looking for a fun day on the Edisto River.

As you enter through the gates there's a Statue of George Washington and a Marker that marks the site of the Centennial Fort Sumter Time Capsule. One of the oldest militia groups still active in the United States, it was founded in 1807. Made of Carolina gray granite, the 42-foot high memorial, a smaller model of the Washington Monument in Washington DC, which was unveiled in 1891 and is inscribed with the names of important military battles.
