Came here for Northeastern Chinese food and was pleasantly surprised to find that this place actually serves a mix of regional Chinese cuisines. The decor is simple, but the service was pretty efficient. Also the portion of the dishes were big, just like northeastern style. We ordered the sweet and sour pork, dried hot pot with shrimp, crispy little yellow croakers, Peking duck, cold noodles with sesame sauce, and stir fried noodles with mixed seafood. Verdict: 1.Sweet and sour pork: 5/5 The thickness of the pork loin was perfect, evenly coated in a extra crispy batter, and the sauce was spot on, yum! 2.Peking duck: 4/5 Decent for San Diego, and it even came with soup. 3.Dried hot pot with shrimp: 4/5 Pretty well balanced, not overly oily or spicy, with a nice touch of fragrant flavor from the sauce 4. Crispy little croaker: 5/5 Light and crispy not oily at all! 5. Stir fried noodles with seafood: 3.5/5 Balanced, but not my favorite. 6. It's been ages since I last visited this restaurant! A friend raved about their Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs (Guobaorou), so I came back with some friends. The portion of Guobaorou is generous, and it's truly delicious--crispy and flavorful. We also ordered Jellyfish with Vinegar Dressing. The jellyfish here is quite thick and chunky, not the smooth, silky kind I'm used to, so I wouldn't recommend it. Then there's the Braised Local Chicken in Iron Pot. The picture looked super tempting, so I specifically asked if it came with the steamed rolls (huajuan) shown in the photo. The waiter told me they only have steamed buns (mantou) instead. When it arrived, turns out they're machine-made frozen buns bought from the supermarket. This dish is a letdown, so I don't suggest it either. On the bright side, the Sizzling Pork Kidneys were pretty good! We also wanted to order Peking Duck, but it requires advance reservation--make sure to call ahead if you want to try it. read more

Yummy House took over the suite where an Asian gastropub used to be located in the Convoy District. It's part of a small cul de sac of five businesses which means the shared parking lot has extremely limited capacity. The inside wasn't changed much from its predecessor, but the menu was completely revamped. The Roast Duck was the signature item on the menu. The duck needs to be ordered in advance so planning is required if you are going to dine here and want to eat that product. The rest of the offerings was Chinese fare ranging from cold dishes, vegetables, meats, seafood, noodles, rice and soup. For my meal, I selected the Green Chives Turnover and Black Pepper Steak. The first choice was four fried dumplings that were each cut in half. They were the largest dumplings I had seen in awhile with lots of flavorful minced filling. It was a good value for the price. The second choice was a dish consisting of stir fried cube steak that was served with a bed of white onions. The marinade on the meat was a bit salty, otherwise there was not much to remark about. Comes with the duck sliced for you and soup made with the bones & some of the duck meat. The family liked it, although I thought it could've used a little more salt. Beef onion: the fam really enjoyed this one. The beef was very tender & the sauce was good. Sweet & sour pork: very unique texture. Like one of the reviewers said, the coating is like mochi like. Kind of sticks to your gums & teeth when hot. I liked the texture, but we didn't like the sauce. It was over caramelized and was sort of solid. It was like over cooked caramel and stuck to our teeth. Even solidified onto the plate. Yang zhou fried rice: bland and was missing the sausage. It was basically shrimp bland fried rice. Baked pumpkin with salted egg yolk: it was ok. It was very sweet, really heavy, & greasy. It's probably an acquired taste. Service was meh, they basically just dropped off the food then went on the phone on speaker to call for their medical stuff. No one came by to refill our waters or take away empty plates till the very end when we asked for more water & the check. Would I come back here again? We came here for the Peking Duck. They suggest you order in advance so we made a reservation and placed the order. The duck was delicious - served with the duck soup, pancakes, scallions, cucumber and sauce. My friends really, really enjoyed the meal. The skin was crispy, just the way they like it. I enjoyed the vegetable dishes. The noodles, pumpkin and eggplant were good. Some of the flavors were new to me because this place serves northern Chinese food. It went well before but their dish I ordered recently tasted like mixed with "overnight leftover". Some potatoes (not all) in the dish tast like cooked last night. Ordered six dishes in one go, and the total cost was just a little over 100. Best value for money! Pickled Cabbage with pork belly pot Classic Northeastern flavor! The white meat is incredibly tender and pairs perfectly with the sour cabbage. The Northeastern sour cabbage adds a strong and refreshing sourness to the dish. It also includes frozen tofu and vermicelli. It arrived hot! The sour cabbage in this pot is indeed appetizing, but the soup base is quite heavy, so it's best enjoyed when shared. Stewed Chicken with Mushrooms These are genuine wild mushrooms! The flavor is very authentic. This dish highlights the characteristics of Northern cuisine with its savory and tender meat, along with the use of multiple layers of aromatic spices for stewing. The chicken pieces are a bit small, but they're flavorful. The vermicelli in this dish is the finishing touch. However, it's best to eat it quickly! Initially, it absorbs the rich and well-balanced soup flavors and becomes very delicious. The longer it soaks, the saltier it becomes. Glass Noodles salad An appetizer for all ages! The cold skin noodles are refreshing with a chewy texture, and they're incredibly smooth. The colorful garnishes also include plenty of vegetables and lean shredded meat. I really like the taste of this dish. It might not be a mind-blowing masterpiece, but the flavor is familiar and delightful, and the texture is excellent Jellyfish salad I can't resist jellyfish, having grown up by the seaside. I'm particularly satisfied with the crispy texture of the jellyfish served here - it's tender and refreshing! It's a perfect blend of sourness and freshness, and it's a must-have among the various meat-heavy dishes. Pork Meatballs Its Chinese name literally means braised Lion's Head and it's a very classy Northern China dish. It perfectly replicates the taste from my memories! The pork is not at all gamey! It's properly seasoned, with the authentic flavors of Northern Lion's Head meatballs. The texture is amazing, with a thin outer layer that's crispy from frying and tender meat inside. I love it! Meet Sauce Noodles The noodles are wonderfully chewy! They have a good bite to them. The sauce is also very fragrant, with minced meat. After mixing fully, each strand of noodle is coated in sauce, and it's fragrant but not too salty. It's also convenient for takeout. A little more garnish would be nice～ In my opinion, among all the takeout orders I've placed, this is definitely the best value for money. Late lunch. Ordered General Tso chicken. Asked for white meat He said it was made with white meat. It does not come with anything but the main dish. Charged us for a side of white rice about a cup. Chicken was size of marbles not standard white meat chicken chunks. It was not breaded but stir fried with a few carrot slices, onions and small jalapeño looking peppers. Sauce was tasty but very greasy. $22.00 for us to split one dish. Clean venue but they gave us tiny, thin napkins (one each) and plastic, cheap to go forks. We were eating in. I don't know why people aren't flocking to this restaurant. Granted, it is sort of hidden, but I guarantee you it is a hidden gem. The food is fantastic! The Mongolian beef, beef fried rice and spicy crispy chicken are to "die for." The beef is so tender that it melts in your mouth. The crispy chicken has just enough spice and crisp that you will enjoy every bite. There are other dishes on the menu that are just as fabulous. I am so very torn. I was seated quickly and everything looked clean. I perused the menu and decided to splurge on the expensive duck, knowing I'd be waiting an hour, and ordered bao and asked after drinks. The bao wasn't available and apparently the wine and beer on the wall are decorative. I chose a beef and onion stir fry. None of the dishes have detailed descriptions on the menu. It came out in a reasonable time and the beef was tender and well-flavored (spiced without being burny hot). Had to ask for rice (apparently an $18 dish doesn't come with rice). We ended up getting three dishes: Spare rib winter melon soup - this reminds of a Filipino dish called nilaga. I liked it, although could've had a little more of a punch. Dry pot chicken - it has jalapeños in it, but it wasn't too spicy. Of course, the chicken has bones, so just be sure not to choke on it. :-) Pork bone - this was tasty and just fell off the bone. But, just to clarify, we had ordered a pork belly dish. Yeah, it wasn't pork belly! Oh well! Maybe one of these days we'll try the peking duck. It's a little pricey, though. Yummy House is a Chinese Restaurant that recently opened in Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. Their focus is on Peking Duck, Chinese food, as well as Americanized Chinese food. Location: That shopping center is sort of hidden (i.e. in the old SOHO location), and honestly, I probably would have never known to stop by if it were not for a foodie friend that wanted to try out the place!! Parking isn't that great... but there is some additional parking in the back of the shopping center. Preparation: I read through all of the negative reviews on Yelp and braced myself for 2 things: (1) Poor Customer Service (2) Peking Duck has to be ordered an hour ahead of time (and sometimes they forget to make it!) Actual Experience: A group of 4 of us arrived on Thursday night around 7PM (in the heavy torrential rain). Lucky for us, the restaurant wasn't that busy due to the weather but service itself was "acceptable" (compared to American standards). It's very "absentminded", but knowing this, our group would proactively flag down the waiter / waitress to get what we wanted. Their English speaking skills aren't that great - but that's okay, I'm there for the food!! A little patience required - I can handle that!! Food: (1) Peking Duck - My foodie friend ordered the Peking Duck an hour ahead of time. The Peking Duck comes with wrappers (tortilla looking things instead of buns that I'm normally used to). It also comes with a large bowl of soup on the side. Otherwise, flavors were on point. My family and I typically only eat turkey for Thanksgiving maybe once every 3 years. All the other years we tend to eat out to save ourselves all the prep work and clean up work afterwards. This year we decided on Yummy House since my brother in law loves eating Peking Duck and this was supposed to be their specialty. We followed protocol and ordered the duck 1 hour in advanced. Here is my take on the food items we ordered: 1. Roasted Peking Duck - The presentation was beautiful and the duck skin was crispy but the meat was a bit dry but still tasty. The thin wrap was a nice change from some of the other restaurants serving peking duck. The duck bone soup that was included in the dish was a bit too salty and I found myself drinking plenty of water afterwards. I did find myself loving the duck leg which was extremely crispy and reminded me of duck confit. 2. Meat Platter- a cold platter consisting of pork intestine, ear, feet and liver. This dish was too bland! Their was not dipping sauce that accompanies it. 3. Cold Chicken with Spicy Sauce - this ended up being my most favorite dish of the night. The chicken was tender and flavorful. 4. Crisp Walnut Shrimp - the shrimp was large but did not taste fresh. The walnut used also tasted stale. Everything we had was delicious. It took awhile for our food to arrive but it was worth the wait. Since they have been open for less than a week, it is still taking time for them to work out the kinks. For example, we walked in and the waitress said they didn't have an available table. I asked if we'd be next to get one. She looked confused and went to get help. Then a young man can with a piece of notebook paper that he had just torn out to write our name. Now for the food. Grilled lamb chops were fall off the bone with so much flavor. Black bean fish was tasty but I was hoping for some actual pieces of black beans, it was just sauce. Pork rib and winter melon soup was better than most. In fact, it reminded me of my grandpa's version. Yang chow fried rice was different from any other I've had. There was so much shrimp in it and it was seasoned well. Aside from the regular veggies in that rice, they also had a Chinese squash diced up into it that gave it so much flavor. They ran out of the green beans so we ordered the Chinese lettuce with garlic-amazing! Since the restaurant is so new, I think they don't have their portions to price ratio set correctly. But everyone makes mistakes, instead of my beef noodle soup they made the intestines soup. It has such a strong smell and it made me very nauseous especially I'm super pregnant. He also forgot one dish which I respectfully reminded him of. Prices are very reasonable. Food is delicious, for someone with acquired taste buds like mine and for my hubbys taste buds. My fav was the La Pi, you can't come here without ordering one of their most popular dishes Orange pork was yumm! Reminded me of home. Very delicious and homey Northeast Chinese cuisine. Ordered the glass noodle salad, Stewed lamb with sour cabbage and vermicelli, and guobao meat ( authentic Chinese sweet and sour pork ). The Peking duck is freshly prepared and comes with very thin and warm wraps, limitless sides and a delicious duck soup. Everything is done the same way it is done in Beijing. Need to call 1 hour ahead to pre- order. Currently it is catering to takeout primarily during dinner time. We are the only dine-in clientele between 7 and 9 but we nevertheless were satisfied with the taste, presentation and ambience.
