Large short rib box with half rice, half noodles
    Stacee S.

My coworkers and I were working in the area so we got Yumami for lunch and it was pretty good! I really liked the amount of food for the price. I got a large short rib box with half rice half noodles and bok choy. Loved the noodles since I don't generally see that as an option. The bok choy was cooked really well, loved that. I only had one issue...I thought based on the pictures that the short ribs were going to be marinated in a Korean/Hawaiian galbi way. They are not. They were good but mostly just salty and peppery, not at all galbi like I wanted. So, good food overall but if you're looking for Korean/Hawaiian style galbi, it's not lol.

Reduced portion but not the price.

First, I would like to say that the food is good but today we got bamboozled. The beef portion shrunk and the noodles portion grew considerably. What's going on Sandy? Are we going to blame gas prices, tariffs, the war in Iran, global warming? Come on. This is totally sus.

I'm so happy. One of my favorite lunch spots ever was in Hollywood and it closed down years ago... I always talked about my ideal type of bowl with bok choy, ribeye, and a carb all covered in this incredible sesame sauce. Today saw that this mom and pop actually reopened at a different location in Lincoln Heights. Can't wait to get this regularly again!

First time trying this recently & I am so happy I found this small establishment! Miss sandy is always so sweet & welcoming. The food is just as great, don't forget to add their sesame sauce it's soooo good! I work around the area so I will definitely come in any chance that I get.

Over 10 years ago there was a Chinese restaurant in Hollywood that offered the exact same food as Yumami. It didn't survive but I'm glad this place was so close to my house. I don't know why the owner of Yumami gave themselves a Japanese name because this is a Chinese restaurant. Food is delicious and very affordable.

Outstanding! If you're anywhere near the area and are looking for a quick grab and go lunch spot this is definitely it! The short ribs were flavorful and cooked to perfection! Rice and bok choy had this rich subtle buttery flavor to them that was just *chef's kiss*! You place your Oder on the huge screen at the front window, wait a few min and then you are served a great lunch at $14. Awesome spot!

Very fast to prepare n can't judge by the size of the box. I got the Galbi set (prime rib). About $13. Baby bol choy, brown rice. The galbi was very thin. Maybe too much garlic salt(?). It was quite salty. Bok choy was ok. Little less salt may help. The brown rice helped to eat the whole box with all the salt. Maybe it's only me with the salty taste. The meat itself was marinated for a while as the flavor is deep, but it's not restaurant galbi do dont expect...more like a dosirak galbi. Either way a good lunch. A side of kimchi in the corner would have been nice lol. There are like 2 ladies working here. A tiny shop. I think u can eat outside at the Canopy tables? Front Parking can only fit 1-2 cars...3 at max if possible. I think theres a parking lot in the back. The orders are taken by Digital format on a screen. Not sure if they take cash.

Short Ribs Beef LARGE for $14 (with brown rice and mixed veggies)

I imagine parking can be a pain in the butt in this area when it is very busy. The restaurant itself only has 2 spots adjacent to their business and only a couple of outdoor tables under a tent. I ordered the large grilled short ribs with brown rice and mixed veggies of bok choy, Shanghai green choy and Chinese mustard greens. It cost $14 and is a substantial and pretty generous amount of food for one person. The food was freshly made and delicious BUT the short ribs were way too salty. I loved the veggies and saw on their Yelp page that they come from their own farm - they were obviously very fresh and tender. I'll try another protein next time with hopes it won't be nearly as salty as the short ribs which were otherwise perfectly tender and had a lovely smoky, grilled taste.

Does this place have anything to do with Box Choy in hollywood?

Hi Nikki, we haven't operated under Box Choy since 2020. Box Choy was closed due to the pandemic and the team relocated to the community of Lincoln Heights in 2022.

We only tried the carbonara udon, but it was truly memorable. The sauce was creamy although a little split, but not overly salty which allowed the subtle umami and miso flavors to shine. The noodles were cooked well and had a gentle chew. The bacon was juicy with lots of fatty bits. Next time I would add an ontama to it to make it even better. The service was great and quick. Marugame Monzo's sauce, however, is the opposite of Menchirashi's. The sauce is SUPER flavorful with a rich, creamy mouthfeel and a strong umami flavor from the bacon and miso. I added mentaiko since I did the same at Menchirashi and honestly, everything was fantastic. The udon itself is pretty much exactly like fresh udon in Japan. Perfectly bouncy, chewy, and satisfying. Staff were also wonderful and service was insanely fast. We probably waited less than 10 minutes for both our udon and tempura, and they consistently checked in to make sure everything was good. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu, especially the uni cream udon. The only thing I didn't like was the shrimp tempura since it had a lot of batter and not a ton of shrimp, so it was on the greasy side. I did enjoy the soft boiled egg tempura though. The yolk exploded into the udon and somehow made the whole bowl even better hehe. There are plenty of tables inside with limited bar seating. If you're a 2 top you might be sharing a table real close with some neighbors (they put a divider). If there's a wait, write your name down on the clipboard outside!

Food wasn't good. Nothing stood out to me except for the salad. For starters we were suppose to have two different salads but without apologies a waitress simply brought out a small bowl of cucumber slices stating they ran out of the other salad. No comp or no discussion on an alternative where I was charged full prefix price. It was disappointing since I wanted to try their salads and that was the best part of their entire prefix and only dish we actually finished. For Steak and eggs entree, they never asked how I would've like the steak cooked and they brought it medium, which we did not touch since it was too bloody for my liking. The deserts were all underwhelming also including meringue, tart and chocolate mousse. I got sliders for my kid who loves a good cheese burger but she didn't eat it either. Also having fries with burgers would've been nice and I was surprised she got two small sliders with no fries. Usually sliders and chicken tenders are always served with fries. Esp for children. Service was okay initially but towards end I had to keep looking for waiter trying to ask for things since again end of day I felt workers were busy closing out and not as much attention was paid to guests still left. Ambiance was okay. It was farther than I thought near Chinatown than my usual west LA options. To me it's about experience, taste and quality time but given price point and culinary experience I had for Mother's Day prefix, I do not want to dine again at this restaurant.

It almost made us want to leave and not dine here overall. On the food side, portions are definitely generous, especially for pasta. We ordered the crab gratin, mentai pasta, and the bolognese. My personal favorite was the mentai it had a rich, savory flavor that stood out the most. The bolognese is apparently one of their top-rated dishes, but it had a unique twist that didn't quite hit for me. I'd personally prefer a more traditional version from an authentic Italian spot. One downside for me personally, I ended up with a pretty bad stomach ache afterwards likely because I'm lactose intolerant and many of the dishes are dairy-heavy, so that's something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to that. Overall, big portions and bold flavors, but service and dietary considerations might make or break the experience depending on what you're looking for.
