Dr Yuan is such a awesome spine surgeon. He took care of my back complaint of sciatica and weakness. He was so patient and very good at explaining the plan we were going to do to fix my problem with L2&3 of my lower back. This after having L4&5 done by another doctor. He made sure to connect the L2-4 even though he didn't do L3&4 and made sure to recheck them too. He also made sure that I was good before allowing the hospital to discharge me. I was so glad he did because it made recuperating at home easier and experienced no problems. His staff were great to in coordinating everything for the surgery. After care is great too as he explains everything to me. Even giving me physical therapy to help me get my strength back. I did choose Southland Physical Therapy in Long Beach because my therapist, Sami had received great feedback for Dr Yuan from his other clients who had surgery with Dr Yuan. The first time I saw him he spent approximately 15 minutes with me, ask me to walk and he saw that I was having trouble getting up and told me that at my age I should expect back issues and he had X-rays that showed no fractures. I told him that I not only had issues with my spine but I had a pinched nerve on my left hip, thigh and knee and his response was "I only work on spines" and then he sent me to find a physical therapist ( anyone would do, he would not recommend one) So I went for physical therapy and was still in pain when I went back to him so he sent me for an MRI. Once he read the MRI, that was the last time I heard from him. I sent him a message through MyChart asking for a referral but he never responded. Also, I would have liked an explanation (other than I am too old) for the MRI, I understand that there was no sign of fracture ( which was already determined but I would have liked an explanation of the other findings. I certainly don't expect to have the same physical capability of someone younger but I really don't think I should be in constant pain. Apparently if you aren't qualified for surgery, you are of no use to him! I would never wish him on any one! read more

Dr. Philip Yuan, He is a very caring and personable physician and has a great bedside manner. He truly takes the time to listen not only hear his patients. He eased my mind when I had my Neck surgery, he could see the fear in my eyes of having my Neck cut open, the fear of having my cervical spine nerves exposed, and also my disc fused together but he answered all my questions and put my mind at peace. I liked that he kept it real and didn't sugar coat the risk especially that I'd probably be left with some permanent nerve damage. His surgical skill during my surgery was superb. I recovered well and all of my post operative visits with him were very pleasant. I would recommend him extremely for anyone needing orthopedic surgery. Spoke to me like I was an idiot, and I do hold an advanced degree, hate to think of how he speaks to others. Dr. Yuan is technically a very good spinal surgeon. Very , grateful, and fortunate my " spinal surgery journey "was for the most part successful. In spite, of Certain negative experiences, I am doing pretty well with my back and neck( " flare ups") do occur.( this is me , unfortunately). I am feeling , beyond relieved to be on the other side of this six year , physical and emotional "roller coaster" ( 5 back surgeries ( one being a fusion) as well , as a cervical neck fusion. Dr Yuan is the BEST! Many coworkers have recommended that I see Dr Yuan for my back. It was the best health decision I made. I had seen two chiropractors and the last one had the professionalism to take an X-ray to see what was causing my major back pain. Looking at the X-ray showed a major anomaly. The lay person would see the X-ray and know something was wrong. A chiropractor couldn't fix me. I visited Dr Yuan and he immediately ordered an MRI. The MRI showed misaligned lumbar and pinched nerves. He started the usual, physical therapy, and cortasone injection to no avail. Then surgery. I can't emphasize the importance of back health. Long story short, Dr Yuan fixed my back! When I woke from the surgery I could feel my legs, no numbness and restricted range of motion due to pain. I am 3 weeks shy of one year since Dr. Yuan and his team performed Anterior and Posterior L5-S1 Discectomy, Laminectomy and Fusion. I really can't say enough positive things regarding this very talented and compassionate surgeon. Always took time to explain my condition over a few years and only took the surgical route when foraminal injections were no longer an option due to degenerative arthritis. He literally saved my life... In 2013 I was hospitalized with a serious life-threatening infection of my spinal cord stimulator; Dr. Yuan worked with myself, my husband and the Dr. that implanted the device in Kansas City until he had a clear path. He then operated successfully to remove the device, and at my request months later installed a new updated version. I have since had to have the device, which was acting up (not the fault of Dr Yuan), removed and chose Dr. Yuan to do that procedure as well. He also shaved down my old fusion screws as they were sticking out and causing pain. Now 6 years later I am willing to drive almost 2 hours from where I moved to go see him as my back is deteriorating and I am again in need of a great spinal doctor; there is no one else I can imagine going to and trusting like I do Dr. Yuan! For those that had bad experiences I am sorry, and I will admit some of the office staff (especially the disability paperwork gal) are not all that kind/considerate and yes there is almost always a long wait, but find me a specialists office anywhere where you don't wait. Dr. Yuan gave me a new lease on life. For years I suffered with severe back and lower extremity pain. I began seeing Dr. Yuan about four years ago. He diagnosed me with pain in the setting of L4-L5 lytic spondylolisthesis and severe disk degeneration and lumbar stenosis. He explained to me how surgery would be able to help me. Due to family issues at the time, I was not ready to have surgery. Dr. Yuan supported my decision and sent me for epideral shots until I was ready for surgery. He was always very assuring and understanding. I finally agreed to surgery one year ago. He performed a two part surgery to repair all the damage. I no longer have pain in my back or legs. I have no need for any medication. I am strong and I am able to have a healthy life once again. I am so grateful to Dr. Yuan. In my opinion he is the best. I just had follow up on my sugery with him. As a Health Care Administrator, Dr. Yuan failed to meet my expectations as a patient. Dr. Yuan was explained how severe my back pain has been within the last 2 years, yet he went based off of an mri image only, completely discounting my actual pain and symptoms. Based on a study/seminar on the Pathology of Spinal Health in Mexico (2014) one should operate if symptoms are prevalent/moderate-severe, regardless of the lack of/severity of a simple image. The images obviously show slight protrusion and my symptoms are obvious. Not only did he just look at my images, he also did not do any simple mobility test or sensitivity test or measured anything other than going based off of an image. As someone with a B.S. in Health Care Administration, I can safely say that quality assurance is lacking due to procedural flaws in the simplicity of doing other test on me, as an orthopedic surgeon he failed to follow general protocol when it comes to fully examining a patient. This has to due with him simply not wanting to operate me because I am only 24, it is obvious that he is young and has a larger repertoire of surgeries with older folks. Only risking himself with older people rather than risking himself with a younger patient with pain like myself. He could have been transparent from the get-go and told me that, rather than tell me there's really no other solution for my problem. He said surgery could make things worse but that's generally up to the surgeons performance. Maybe he wasn't confident in himself operating on a 5mm protrusion on a 24year olds back that's been bugging for years. His solution was pain management, but I've dealt with that before and epidural steroids and nothing has helped much more than giving me temporary relief. I've had other opinions and 3/4 doctors recommended me to get surgery. I will be returning to one of those Dr's who are all older and more experienced and confident to perform a surgery on a 24year old. The reason why I ended up at Dr. Yuan's orthopedic office is because he was recommended to me by my attorney and a friend because of how close his practice is to me. Dr. Yuan's consultation, although lacking, was pleasant other than his lack of procedure and understanding of the difference of patient symptoms and imaging. Remember, one can have a large hernia with no pain due to the fact that it is not touching a sciatic nerve. Although my protrusion is just grazing my left sciatic nerve it is still GRAZING it and causing pain, which is all I wanted him to understand. His staff was amazing, he has class, but is still lacking in confidence in operating on younger patients. So I recommend this place only to people over 65 or so if you really want relief. As a professional, you should never sit there and look a patient in the eyes and say there's no other solution other than pain management (lack of empathy), which I have already consulted with...and once again they recommend SURGERY. As a HCA major I can tell you that communication is key from patient to Dr for quality assurance purposes. For example, when a patient dies a Dr must show empathy and professionalism when notifying their loved ones of the situation. In my case he was simply being reluctant and saying that he sees something but not enough for surgery. I wasn't there to convince anybody or kiss ass but there has to be a solution to my pain other than pills which I refuse to poison myself with even longer or steroids. It doesn't take a Dr to understand ones body, lets not put that title on a pedal stool, but it sure does take one hell of a confident Surgeon to perform a clean, skilled, surgery. Next time be more transparent with your patient Dr. Yuan. You were the youngest of the Dr's I've seen and the only one that said no but it's okay I fully understand why coming from a healthcare background. But my advice is to work and perfect your practice so that the patients experience is optimal and for the sake of longevity. I get it your scared to risk yourself but always be 100% transparent with your patients, cut the BS. It's a waste of time. In summary I give this place a one star review due to: Lack of procedure, communication between dr-patient. Lack of experience with younger folks, and lack of empathy (which is a crucial component for any healthcare professional to have). Dr. Yuan performed my laminectomy/discetomy 5/2/17at Lbmmc. I feel strongly, if I poorly have chosen another surgeon I would have had suffered nerve damage. Due to my severe compression, my procedure Required additional work and time. Dr yuan is extremely competent , humanistic, and compassionate. He Was thourough in his explanation of the surgery,as well as recoveryprocess.,( my surgical scar is very minimal, as well). I would only entrust dr. Yuan with my spine care, he is amazing.on a final note, doctor yuan has with true concern and empathy , adressed my current thoracic/spine issues , that do not req. surgery. I am so thankful to Dr. Phillip Yuan, his assistant, Jennifer, and the incredible team at Memorial Orthopaedic Surgical Group. My Mom has suffered from spinal stenosis of the lumbar for over 9 years. She couldn't stand for more than 5-10 minutes without sitting down because her feet were becoming so numb she felt like she was going to fall. She tried to have surgery 9 years ago when she was first diagnosed but the doctor she was referred to was not confident that the surgery would work because she is overweight even after he had her do all the scans and pre-op stuff but that is another story. She now suffers from RA, has COPD, and various other issues that she is living with so getting her to go see Dr. Yuan took some convincing from me and my brother. She finally met with him and she is so grateful now. Dr. Yuan and his assistant, Jennifer are very professional, compassionate, friendly, and very patient. We had a lot of questions and they took their time to explain everything to us. My Mom had surgery on October 30, 2019. Dr. Yuan and his team released the pressure on her nerves in two places in her spine. They did a spinal fusion but she has two rods and twelve screws in her back. Her recovery has been amazing, she was feeling good enough to join the family for Thanksgiving. By Christmas, she was walking around more and was able to enjoy the holiday with her grandchildren. It is now May and she is doing great. She can walk longer distances and doesn't have the constant numbing that she had before. Dr. Yuan completed a 3 level (c4-5, 5-6 , & 6-7) fusion on me on 11/6/13. He did a great job. Highly recommend him and Memorial Orthopedics.

I have had two surgeries by Dr Yuan in the span of 1 1/2 years and they were both successful! The first was a result of a very active lifestyle over the years and a couple accidents which left me with narrowing of the spinal canal, a 11mm herniation, and bone on bone. The area affected was from L3/4 to L5/S1. The last 3 years I was in pretty much constant pain and tried anti inflammatories, Chiropractic, epidurals and disc decompression. Not a one worked so I made an appointment with Dr Yuan. I found him to be very sympathetic, genuinely concerned and came up with a good plan to address my pain and symptoms. And he listened to and addressed my concerns. He performed a laminectomy and fusion on my affected vertebrae and I had immediate relief, except for the post surgery pain. After 2 months I felt almost normal and pain free. My second surgery resulted from a fall while hiking out of state. The original fusion held together perfectly, but energy from the fall transferred up the vertebrae to the next unsupported area which was L2/3 and destroyed the disc which left me in a lot of pain. I was able to make it back to Long Beach to see Dr. Yuan and he added to my fusion as well as putting in a spacer between L2/3 and again I experienced pain relief. In all my dealings with Dr. Yuan I have had the upmost trust in his surgical skill, and his genuine concern for me as a patient. I recommend him to anyone I know or talk to that is suffering from spinal pain. read more

As a paid physician reviewer for Horizon Blue Cross of New Jersey Dr Yuan denied payment for treatment of epidural injections performed on my patient. I am a spinal surgeon practicing in NJ and have been seeing my patient for over a year. He has a spinal condition called isthmic spondylolisthesis and neuroforaminal stenosis. He was having severe low back and right leg pain. Initially I recommended a structured exercise routine and anit-inflammatory medication as is standard care. He lost 30lbs and went to the gym consistently over the next few months but was still having pain. At that point I recommended epidurals, as is standard care after failing a home exercise program. Hss insurance plan did not require authorization, so I performed the injections and followed up with him afterwards. After the injections he still was symptomatic and required surgery, which was approved by his insurance and performed by me. His insurance plan refused to pay me for the epidural injections claiming they were not medically necessary. I appealed to Dr Yuan, speaking with him personally explaining the situation and his history and he denied payment for all epidurals. Unfortunately Dr Yuan is what is wrong with medicine. By being an employed agent of the insurance company he put Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ's interests ahead of my patient's health and well being. read more

Do not waste your time or money with this doctor. I was, at first, excited to meet with him because the staff at the facility was welcoming and I thought I would receive the same from Dr. Yuan. However, when I met with Dr. Yuan he seemed very rushed and like I was taking his time away from something much more important than him helping me. As he was going over the preliminary questions that I filled out upon my arrival about my symptoms, he was extremely rude. He asked me a question about me circling where my pain was, after he asked I decided to give him a brief history about my pain and how it has progressed. He rudely interrupted me and said all I want is an answer to the question I just asked. I was shook and tension in the room between him and I began to rise because I felt that he did not want to help me in solving this pain. I was very frustrated and honestly wanted to walk out after receiving that perplexing and utterly rude treatment from a "doctor." He then began to rush through my paperwork and recommemed me to get an MRI and that everything we went over couldnt lead him to a solution. I will NEVER return back to this doctor and I hope this review steers others in another direction. read more

I went to Dr Yuan with back pain, he did an X-ray and thought my back looked fine so he sent me to physical therapy which didn't help. He ordered an mri and the results were potentially devastating with lytic lesions in my vertebrae. His bedside manner SUCKED, he rushed through telling me me that I had cancer in my spine, didn't want to take into consideration that I also have sarcoidosis when asked if that was a possibility and just insisted that it was metastatic cancer. He then handed me a tissue and rushed out of the room, leaving me there by myself and terrified. So, I then had to undergo a biopsy of my vertebrae. Two weeks after the biopsy, I then had to call his office for results, he did not contact me with the results until after I called to ask about them, he then rushed through saying that it was nothing, just noncaseating granulomas... which I then said, so it IS sarcoidosis. He hurriedly confirmed that it was and again brushed it off as nothing. I asked him to please forward the results to my pcp, which just seemed to annoy him as his reply was, he already has access to it (yes, but that doesn't mean he knows because the results weren't sent to him). I still don't have the results in writing and have had to ask my pcp to get the results so we can figure out the next step. If you like a doctor to be rushed and do minimal work, then this is your guy, but if you want someone with compassion that will actually read your intake and consider the options... then run the other way!!!! read more

This doctor flew into the examination room, as if he was being interrupted while was doing way more important things than trying to help me with my neck pain. He was blunt, almost cocky, no empathy, no bedside manner, and definitely got his point across to me "woman, you are wasting my time". He was recommended to me when I was at the end of my rope from all the pain in my neck. He untied the knot I had been hanging on to. His assistant was the complete opposite. She treated me kind and was very caring with a huge capacity for compassion. read more

Dr. Yuan performed a microdiscectomy on L4/L5 due to extreme sciatic pain in January 2019. I have been pain free since the surgery. I first went to see Dr. Yuan in March 2018 for my sciatica. I appreciated that he wanted to try other methods to eliminate my pain before resorting to surgery, which was my last choice. Throughout 2018, we tried physical therapy, acupuncture, a chiropractor, pain relieving medication, changed diet, and even mental health therapy. While all helped somewhat, nothing eliminated my pain. The surgery itself took about 1 1/2 hours, and I took 3 weeks off work to recover from surgery. I have begun swimming, biking and running again and feel great. I highly recommend Dr. Yuan. read more

Two back surgeries! Two different reasons! Four years apart! Last one was last April 2018. Excellent care and instructions both times. Today I had PT and the therapist said.... "Wow, you have healed completely I can't even seen the scar from surgery!" Which it was about five inches long. I have healed completely and have no problems from either surgery..... read more

Dr. Yuan hit a Grand Slam Home Run for me. My back condition had gotten so bad that I could not stand for much more than 10 minutes. My legs would go numb and I would fall. When I woke up from the surgery I could tell the problem was fixed. No back pain into my legs and no numbness. I am six weeks out from surgery and none of the symptoms have returned. Dr. Yuan and his staff are some of the most professional that we have seen. My husband and I were so thankful to have been seen by them. The care and extra time that they all took with us was so encouraging. The Dr. took the time to show us where the injury was on the MRI and then used his spine model to show us what the injury was doing to the spine.
