Dr. Bhalla is great! I've had back issues and intermittent pain throughout my adult years. Whenever it got intolerable I resorted to acupuncture and/or chiropractic care and on a few occasions epidurals. Someone cutting on my back was not anything I was receptive to. When sciatic episodes became more frequent and longer lasting and I was forced to postpone scheduled knee replacement surgery I reluctantly decided to again consult an orthopedic surgeon. After initial consultation, x-rays and MRI I had follow up appointment with Dr. Bhalla to discuss options. He recommended surgery. Still reluctant to go that route I opted for another try with an epidural, but to to no avail. Back to Dr. Bhalla who told me the problems were going to continue to get worse so at age 73 I finally agreed to surgery. Lower lumber fusion surgery was performed at Long Beach Memorial Hospital by Dr. Bhalla and Dr. Rao (vascular surgeon). Anterior Lumber Interbody Fusion (ALIF) and laminectomy surgeries were performed on Monday and Thursday of the same week. The week in the hospital (overall very good care and treatment) and first 2 weeks at home I experienced moderate pain and discomfort but nothing intolerable. After 2 weeks of light rehab at home I started physical therapy program. After several weeks of PT my back felt really good. It has been nearly one year since the surgery and other than minimal discomfort during the initial recovery period I have experienced no back pain! From the initial consultation through the post-op visits Dr. Bhalla thoroughly explained all the options, the details of the surgical procedure, the recovery and rehabilitation process and patiently answered all my questions. Dr. Bhalla is a compassionate and highly skilled physician and surgeon! And, kudos to his very competent and kind office staff. While back surgery is a last resort, if there is no other viable way to address your pain and problems Dr. Bhalla is the surgeon for you. read more

Best Orthopaedic Surgeon EVER!!!! I wouldn't have had my most recent lower spine surgery if he wasn't available. He's the Best, and his staff is also. He has the best bedside manners, he pays attention to what your needs and concerns are, he thinks of you only when he's dealing with you. After my surgery and I went home the next day, he called me to check to see how things were going. At the time they were going well. The next day there was an issue. I had also received a text message from his office so I called in and they got him on the phone. He explained what was going on and called a prescription in for my issue. He always keeps the patient the priority and I personally appreciate that. Also, the day of my surgery, as he was heading to his prep area he looked at my son and told him "I'm going to take good care of your mom", that sealed the deal for me. He has always been an exceptional doctor for me. And his office personnel are awesome and special. You cannot write a review without mentioning them. I've been a patient of Dr. Bhalla for a little under a year and am absolutely astounded by the level of care and professionalism demonstrated by Dr. Bhalla and his executive assistant Tyra Joseph. I've had the misfortune of dealing with dozens of medical professionals and facilities and generally speaking, my experience has been frustrating to say the least. The reasons for this are usually related to unprofessional communication, lack of follow-through, lack of empathy and emotional intelligence, and an overall sense of being treated like a problem to be solved as quickly as possible. Dr. Bhalla and Tyra have given me the opposite experience. I feel cared for and listened to. Dr. Bhalla is a great communicator. He listens to me and is never rushed when I speak to me. I believe his number #1 quality is his empathy. He is always patient and never short with me. He is an expert surgeon and that is what I would expect of someone with his experience. There are many doctor's that don't have the caring,patience to take the time to listen and real really be present with their patients. I have had three epudurals and the 3rd did not work. I someb managed to mess up my back pretty bad Memorial Day weekend. I contacted dr Bhalla's office on a Tuesday morning and got an appointment for the next day. He scheduled me for a MRI on Thursday. Got results Friday morning and the GOOD doctor said I needed surgery. My pain level on a 1-10 scale was approximately 17! He got his team together and managed to get me into the hospital that afternoon and performed surgery at 6:00AM the following day. When I recovered from the anesthetic the pain was gone. It's important to note the he had things on his agenda that took him out of the country but that did not stop him from making a follow up call to assure all was well. He also arranged for my release the next day. I'm grateful to have had a skilled and caring doctor. Hopefully I won't need his surgical skills in the future. Well, I had another problem with my lower back that required the GOOD doctor do another surgery in January. As hoped and believed, it had great results. This is a top notch diagnostician, physician, surgeon. His manner is kind, un-rushed and he listens. He also knows his stuff. I am a professional musician and had I not sought treatment it's possible I might have lost significant dexterity. As it turned out, the surgery was a tremendous success and I have renewed dexterity at the keyboard, especially with my left hand (the one with the most noticeable decline) which has lifted a huge worry and put me back in my game with new speed. Went to Dr Bhalla in such intense low back pain that I couldn't even sit in the chair in the exam room, I had to stand. I couldn't bend or hinge at the waist, my back and hip were in so much pain. I was told to take an ibuprofen and that I probably pulled a muscle. This is without ordering an MRI. As well, I told him it wasn't muscle pain (I know what muscle pain is from previous injuries) and that I had shooting pains down my leg (hello, nerve issue, duh). Thankfully I was finally able to get an MRI ordered from a doc who cares (and who was stunned that at my pain level and mobility limitation an MRI hadn't been ordered sooner). I have a sequestered disc which, in case you didn't know, isn't treated with ibuprofen. If you are a woman and in pain, Dr Bhalla seems unable to take your pain seriously. Find a doc who will, so you don't destroy your liver with constant OTC pain meds. read more

I've suffered from sciatica pain for about 10 years with multiple visits to urgent care, steroid and pain medicine injections, and physical therapy. I've been able to manage to pain but was always aware that sooner or later surgery will be necessary. About 3 weeks ago the sciatica pain got so unbearable I couldn't stand up on my feet. This time pain medicine and steroids were not relieving my pain and I had to go to the emergency room. Next day my family doctor recommended that I should be seen by Orthopedic Surgeon and she sent me to Dr. Bhalla for treatment. Lucky the HMO authorization was expedited and approved next day. I called to schedule my appointment and explained the urgency and my pain. I was scheduled for a visit the same day! Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by the front desk staff and given the paperwork to fill out. I was taken for X-rays and exam a few minutes later. Dr. Bhalla reviewed the x rays and my medical history and explained that the surgery is my best option at this point and that we can schedule the surgery for Monday ( I was seen on Friday). He also explained that it's a microscopic surgery to remove a portion of the disk that is causing the pressure on your nerve root and minimal recovery time. It was 4:30 on a Friday and Dr. Bhalla's staff immediately got to work getting the insurance approvals and scheduling my surgery. After my visit, Dr. Bhalla send me a text message regarding the surgery details and let me know that I can text him if I have any questions!!! I did send him a text on a Saturday with some concerns prior to my surgery and he texted me back answering my questions! He visited me during surgery preparation to answer any questions or concerns and right after to let me know everything went well. I went from morphine in my IV at the hospital prior to the surgery to Tylenol after and was up on my feet walking the same day! I went home the next day pain-free! I believe that patient's testimonial is less of a recognition of a doctor's skill and expertise and more of a recommendation of a doctor's ability to listen, care and heal. Dr. Bhalla, was the only spine surgeon ( in the office) while Dr.Yuan was on vacation. I had been a patient at memorial orthopaedic surgical group , for 6 yrs( 6 surgeries) my first surgery ( Dr Bhalla , assisted on) in which , I was re- admitted with MRSA. Dr. Bhalla refused , to see me! I was crying in pain, and his condescending staff thought it was funny. " we , asked he said he is not able, and willing to add you on the schedule " We are full" . I pleaded, nope. I had to go to the ER . Ct, scan , many attempts, to get pain back to manageable levels. Because, of the delay in care , I suffered longer and longer recovery from my "set back". Dr.Bhalla should have seen me,. Care, would have been consistent , and quicker. And, I may have been able to avoid the ER. The , whole incident was horrible, and upsetting. This lack of care, caught me off guard ( even. Though I'm a accustomed to receiving ( delayed, inconsistent , insensitive, and poor care since I became a patient here. I gave high reviews for pt, and Dr.Yuan for his surgical care. I was, not doing well at all , and in Excruciating pain, when I first started treatment with Dr. Yuan/ Jason Smith pt. Because, of this and how far I've come , I feel strongly my surgeries were worth it, and for the most part successful. ( I will always have pain, goal was always have tolerable/ manageable pain). I can walk , and with modifications related to my work ( so, far pain is in check) , walking longer( breaks , as needed. And, yes I have a regimen and also know what to do, when I have a flare up. I have had different medication's for nerve pain/ spasms, and moderate - high end pain. ( however, even though I stopped taking g them assp( pre/ post surgical , or flare up) they , often do not work. So, it's imperative for someone like me to receive care , in a timely and consistent manner from the same doctor, if not same office. At, the very least they could have quickly administered a toradol shot. In, the ER, I had to receive two, and oral medication ( editing too long was playing c"catch-up , for the entire visit. Show , care snd compassion. And prioritize patient care! read more

I just want to say my experience with Dr. Bhalla has been nothing but positive. From the first time I met him I definitely felt his concern. I came in with pain to my lower back. After looking at my X-rays, he found that I had no cartilage in my L4 and L5. This was causing numbness in my toes and tingling of my feet when I stood up and walked after sitting for awhile. He referred me to do physical therapy. This option I felt did not help. Then Dr. Bhalla suggested I get an epidural. During the procedure I felt Dr. Bhalla really wanted to help relieve the discomfort I was feeling. After receiving the epidural, it helped relieve some of the discomfort but I was still feeling pain. So I opted to get the surgery. Dr. Bhalla did a L4/5 and L5/S1 anterior lumbar interbody fusion with insertion of biomechanical cages, allograft, fluoroscopy L5 partial corpectomy. Stage 2 L4-S1 posterior spinal percutaneous instrumented fusion. This procedure pretty much relieved all pain and numbness. I'm still recovering but I am back to exercising. Dr. Bhalla is an awesome doctor. I definitely would recommend him to anyone who is having back issues. Thank you Dr. Bhalla for curing my back and giving me my active lifestyle back!! read more
