Heisenberg Tap Room

In addition to loving beer, am a huge fan of Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul) so decided to head…read moredown to Ensenada from San Diego to check out this Breaking Bad-themed tap room. The spot is actually a straightforward 5 minute walk from the ABC bus terminal in Ensanada's Zona Centro (downtown) area. The brewery is located within a food hall called Pasillo Central where you can buy tacos, burgers, pizza, and other delicacies to go with your craft beer if you wish. It's a fairly small brewery with a smaller selection of beer than I expected (maybe about 7 or 8 beers on tap at the time). Tried a few of the beers, including the Mike IPA (named after Mike Ehrmantraut of Breaking Bad fame) and the Cenicienta, a light (4.5%) golden ale. Was less than impressed with both. The best beer I tried was probably the Luna Roja, a darker red Scottish ale which was pretty good, though not great. The beer prices were solid. 65-70 pesos (around $3.25 to $3.50) for a pint (16oz) and only 20 pesos (around $1) for a 4 oz taster. But wasn't impressed with the place overall quite honestly. There's no air conditioning (only fans) and only one TV in the tap room, though they did also have a small projector screen showing the Monday Night Football game. Bit of a hipster vibe here that might appeal to some. But overall just seemed like a smallish bar that slapped the "Breaking Bad" name on it for the name value. Wasn't impressed but could see myself going back if I happen to be in that area of Ensenada again. They do have a happy hour Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 7 pm.

Once you find the door, keep walking down the long, "under construction" hallway. No, you aren't going the wrong way. No, there wasn't an earthquake. No, this isn't a scene out of a home renovation show. Just keep walking, and you'll find the tap room. It's located in the very back, and it's basically a large, unfinished, concrete block room with an old piano and some tables and chairs. Fancy it ain't, but this is all about the beer. There's a small brewing facility that looks 100% legit homegrown. No fancy hipster junk here. The beer menu is clear and prices are far from bargains. Expect to pay what you would for a pint in any American bar. We had a light and dark beer, and both were tasty (the dark especially - tasted like chocolate). The bartender spoke good English and we were warmly welcomed. Since this place is still a well-kept secret, we were there with only one other customer (some super weird dude who looked like Pablo Picasso and dressed like Jeff Goldblum and was asking a ton of scientific questions about their brewing process). This is a place for real beer nerds, that's for sure. They've got the marketing down as well, with a not-quite copyright infringing logo and they give you stickers if you ask. A little bummed that our beers were served in normal glasses, would've been super rad if they were served in laboratory test tubes or jars or something. Owners are big fans of "Breaking Bad," obviously.

[So mind the wet weather when considering "when" to go, and if the vehicle you're in can handle the potholes a foot (or more) deep.] THE SETUP We followed staff down rustic stone and wooden steps, past several different covered alcoves - almost Tiki in vibe - until we came to the cantina we all were invited into. Their partner-business Ochentos shared their pizzas with us while we sampled the brewery's beers. The varietals were tasty from their pale ale to their brown. The environment was exquisite with it's rustic norms, including the prima dona felines that made their presence known and purported ownership over the grounds we were proceeding. THE LOWDOWN A very fun trek to explore an out of the way brewery and some pretty tasty pizza. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/el-chivo-gru%C3%B1%C3%B3n-villa-de-ju%C3%A1rez?select=nQaP-BTNQeK0t4svUmAkxQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w
