I rarely give out bad reviews and this will be one of a very, very small number of sub-2 star reviews I've ever given. To be clear, I reserve bad reviews for the "unforgivable" shortcomings of an establishment, namely unsanitary food practices, not just bad, but hostile service, and finally, dishonest business practices. This review centers on that final transgression.
I visited this bar with a group of friends while on a weekend cruise getaway. To be fair, the bar was clean, the drinks average, and service friendly, easily worthy of 3-4 stars.
However, upon paying for drinks, the bartender repeatedly overcharged. I always take note in tourist hotspots, as I understand it's a frequent practice and I've experienced it before. In this particular case, prices were clearly printed on placards placed every 2-3 feet on the bar. Prices were in pesos, but when we went to pay, the bartender gave American dollar prices that were twice as high, and as much as 4x higher in some instances, than a standard conversion of the price would have yielded.
This bar accepted cards, so the price gouge was not a product of accommodating acceptance of American dollars (which the taco stalls down the street did just fine without quadrupling the price). Furthermore, there was no "lost in translation" confusion- the bartender was from Ventura and had perfect English. If posted prices were that badly out of date, the review would still warrant the one star for such bad information.
If you're visiting the area, this isn't a bad bar, but be ready to stand your ground on prices. Your other option is to take your money elsewhere to someone who might not be so happy to scam you out of extra money. read more
