These may be the favorite buns on a cheeseburger that I've had in awhile (no sesame seeds, fluffy, fresh). And the cheeseburger was a sold B+. Buuuuuut... The fries weren't that great and I was a little confused by the restaurant. I arrived at 12:00 and the door was locked...it looked closed but as I was walking back to my car, I noticed a lady walking up the sidewalk who said she would open it. We walk into the restaurant and she is literally turning on lights at noon. And then immediately turns around and asks what I'll order (it was my first time so I just blurted out cheeseburger since that it was I came for off of Colin B's review). My meal came out to $7.50 (for the combo) and I handed her a $20. "You don't have something smaller than that?!" she barked. Ummm, no. So I said I would pay for my friend and she could hold onto the $20 until he got there. I asked for my can of coke while I waited, and she obliged. Then Kyle W arrived and he ordered his meal. I let her keep the full $20 (our total was $15.50) because frankly it was easier that way but when he ordered his drink she said that she would give it to him when she was finished cooking his meal (eeeek). It took a little while to get our orders, which was fine because I knew it was made to order and "fresh." The whole situation was just...odd. And the decor in there is super dark and dingy and stuffy. I'd eat here again but probably get it to go.

Double cheeseburger combo for 6.50? Yes. Right up there with Roxie's in terms of a quality flat top cheeseburger. Everything is fresh and made to order. The fries are good, but skip them and get the onion rings, they've got to be home made, and they're probably the best I've had in town.

Everything was horrible and turns out, I can't get a refund?!?!?! Bull crap

The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!

I took the advice, and I'm really glad I did. It was fantastic--stacked with pulled pork, smoked sausage, and beef brisket, all topped with slaw and BBQ sauce on a bun. I also tried a bite of the barbecue bologna, which is a thick-cut slice served on white bread, and that didn't disappoint either. Inside gets pretty smoky, so you'll probably prefer sitting outside. Luckily, there are plenty of picnic tables and seating areas to choose from. I didn't catch the name of the guy who helped me, but he was friendly, energetic, and made the whole experience even better. Overall, a really enjoyable visit.

The food was good but not the "Michelin hype" we were told to expect. The most interesting thing was the Bucatini - it was supposed to be a miso fennel verde and really tasted nothing of miso and mostly like a tomatillo salsa. It was still delicious but not what we'd expected. The corn mash was good - the bacon jus starts to solidify quickly so you can't be afraid you're eating a fatty, heavy dish. It needed a little acid or brightness to balance out IMO. There were micro greens but I would have liked more of them. The broccolini is exactly what you'd expect, also too al dente (even for me! I love a firm veg!!) and the Brussels sprouts were SO SALTY the dish was nearly inedible, which was too bad because the sauce / dressing was really good and adding little ruffle like potato sticks to it added nice texture but I could only have two bites. I will say the Foccaia bread service looked incredible (we did not order it). It seemed like a great group HH shareable. The focaccia looked fresh with crispy edges and fluffy; it was a big round boule about the size of a salad plate. I would go back to try that! I believe the menu changes frequently so that's a reason to return. We were just passing through though so would probably try somewhere else if we were to come back to Memphis. The worst part about it was actually probably the pacing of the meal. Dishes came out essentially all at once and given everything leaned kind of heavy and salty there was no reprieve or way to cleanse the palate between items. Granted, this is family style so ordering 4 dishes for 2 people is maybe not ideal, it still just felt rushed and overwhelming.

I've passed by 7 Mares for years, riveted by the sweet murals with sharks, mermaids, and Mexican dishes painted in the windows, and yet paralyzed by thoughts of a massive language barrier, or a filthy establishment, or something darker - with fear driving my fantasies inevitably to a cartel-style execution awaiting me inside. But I've also imagined it to be the next great Mexican restaurant in town, which I'm on a continual quest to find. I finally got the nerve to go in today, and I was worried for all the wrong reasons. Make no mistake, this IS a dicey part of town. There is a lot of, uh, colorful foot traffic. (El 7 Mares shares its building with a small corner store.) But 7 Mares is an oasis from the outside. No record scratched when I walked in. It was cheerful (with plenty of Halloween decorations adding spirit) and clean enough upon a cursory inspection. I was greeted warmly in fluent English. Even the TV was airing a program in English. (Red flag?) There were several (diverse!) tables of customers in the small front room, with a few people at the tin-roofed bar. I was very relieved to have my assumptions proved wrong. Sadly, the disappointing part of my experience was the food. I have to say that I didn't find the next great Memphis Mexican food today. I went with a safe, standard choice for me: enchiladas suizas with a side of guacamole. Chicken was the only option for these enchiladas. 7 Mares provides free chips and salsa. The salsa was average at best, and the guacamole I ordered was subpar. The salsa reminded me of Los Picosos - not bad, but not my type. I can't verbalize the flavor, but I think it's a combination of sweet and tangy. And quite mild. The guacamole was really creamy, as if it had been mixed with sour cream. Again, edible, just "unnatural" and not very good. I haven't had the processed grocery store guacamole in many years, but this didn't seem too far from what I remember of that stuff. As far as the enchiladas, they were not a good example in my experience. The menu mentioned a tomatillo sauce (that's what defines the dish, right?), but I swear there was nothing but cheese on these. And a ton of it at that. The chicken was good - tender and well seasoned with peppers cooked in. But these weren't the enchiladas suizas I've grown to love. I'll keep going to Playitas when I'm craving those. I may end up giving 7 Mares another try, but there are a ton of proven restaurants in the vicinity - Macon and Summer to the southeast - that already have my loyalty. Things would have to improve dramatically for me to come back a third time.
