I was relying heavily on pain meds for many years to ease the sharp and biting pain that would radiate along the side of my face. Things gradually continued to get worse over the years and I was desperate for help. I came to see Dr. Chiu after having tried many doctors over the years without success: Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, my PCP, Neurologists, TMJ specialists, Massage therapists, Chinese medicine Doctors, etc. My expectation for him to help me was very low after seeing so many doctors and trying so many treatments that I only saw him without much else to lose. After my first visit with him, Dr. Chiu gave me hope! He explained to me that there was severe inflammation and nerve damage in my skull and neck that was creating the pain over my TMJ and producing the trigeminal neuralgia. His focus was to do treatment to diminish the inflammation and restore normal nerve activity to the area of nerve damage. He was very confident that he could help me not only relieve my terrible pain, but also resolve the problem! I was cautiously optimistic of course, but after a few treatments, I was able to open my mouth significantly wider than before with less pain! It took about 6 weeks of treatment for my jaw to open all the way with very little pain. Over the years I got used to opening my mouth about halfway open with a lot of jaw pain so my range of motion was very poor. This time, I could open it all the way for the first time in decades and with minimal pain! After further treatment for a few more weeks, my TMJ and trigeminal neuralgia had completely resolved! From that point on, I could eat without worrying about jaw pain on each bite of food, I could converse normally without struggling with jaw pain, and it just felt like I was freed from this chronic debilitating problem that was a huge stress in my life for so long. I never thought this could ever happen for me! Dr. Chiu's ability to diagnose this neurological condition of mine and to provide the effective treatment for it has been life-changing for me to say the least! I am forever grateful for his medical knowledge, experience, skill, and warm-heart behind it all. It's fantastic that so many people have gotten help from him. Unfortunately, my experience with his practice and treatment was not a positive one. I came to the practice with significant health issues and was very hopeful that I had finally found someone who could help. Before I committed to treatment, there were red flags and my intuition told me this was not a good fit. In retrospect, I wish I would have listened to myself, but I was so desperate for help. My treatment consisted of being placed on a very limited diet. I was already struggling with significant weight loss due to my condition, and lost additional weight all while still dealing with pain on an almost daily basis. Scheduling was also a source of frustration. Dr. Chiu would not make appointments on the spot. He would text his availability not taking the patient's schedule into account. So, not only would you have to sit around waiting for his text, but you also had to see if your schedule would work with his. I'm a super busy person, so this was always a challenge. Early on in the course of treatment, I knew the treatment wasn't working. Therefore, I requested a copy of my contract because I wanted to cancel further treatment. Unfortunately, I learned it was quite difficult to cancel without forfeiting a substantial amount of money already paid. I felt pressured when making the initial decision to commit to treatment. Statements such as "Let me prove that I can help you" and "I don't know what else you're going to do," along with being told that a "special" price was ending soon, created a sense of urgency when I was already vulnerable and looking for help. I would encourage anyone considering Dr. Chiu's practice to carefully review the contract and cancellation policy, understand the exact treatment plan, and ensure you are comfortable with the financial commitment before signing up. I truly regret my decision to undergo his treatment plan. Not only did it not work, but I lost a significant amount of money.

She listens and she's willing to work with you on whatever is bothering you, whatever you're worrying about. And if something is not a big deal, or is a waste of your time/money, she'll say so. She also knows who the best specialists are and you can be confident about her referrals. Yes, you pay an annual concierge fee to be her patient, but I think it's worth it. Also, after reading a couple reviews here, I want to say that yes, I have had to sit in in her waiting room for a while before, but not since she went concierge a couple years ago. And Dr. Mai has a sense of humor. So I can see being deathly sick with the flu and thinking it's NOT funny (or even OK) when your doctor says something like "join the club." But honestly I think it's a matter of humor and personality. She is not a jerk. I actually take comfort (and have a laugh) when I think I'm dying and someone tells me I've got some common illness, just like everyone else, and that I will survive.

I waited about 20 minutes in the waiting room, they called me in, then I waited another 15 minutes before I got to see Dr. Mai. One reason why Dr. Mai decided to stop taking patients for the time being is precisely because she wanted to give more quality of care to her current patients. I can appreciate that. She walked in and she was SO YOUNG I was caught off guard! But she already has two teenage kids. I found out that she graduated med school at the age of 22 and had her kids at 24 while she was finishing up residency. Ask her to tell you her story, it's crazy! She's the sweetest person too. Anyway, while I was with her I felt completely cared for. She was very attentive and I never felt rushed... she really gave me her 100%. She does a lot of things online and is super tech savvy too, so you can pretty much ask her anything through the internet and she'll respond within 24 hours.

FREE COVID test (there is another test option that you need to pay for), NO line, and QUICK testing…read moreprocess! I made an appt day of about an hour before at the Santa Ana location. Very easy to do online. Once they confirm the appointment they send you a link to fill up the standard COVID questions. When you arrive there are signs to guide you to the testing area. You stay in the car till you have checked in. My link did not work for me, so I had to go up to the table to scan a QR code. TIP: HAVE ZOOM INSTALL ON YOUR PHONE! Luckily I did but they may have other options but not sure because I already had zoom. Then you will have a zoom meeting with the PA to quickly go over why you are taking a COVID test. Literally took less than a minute and then she will approve you to take the test. After that you go up to the line and they took me right away because there was no line (I went on a Monday at 11:30am not sure if it was because it was just not a busy day if that's how it usually is). Then they give you the test, it was the nose swab test. They just kind of swirl the swab like 5 times maybe in each nostril like midway not like before where it was deep inside your nose painful lol. Then you're done! Easy! I initially chose this location for testing because online it said same day results. However when I got there the PA and the person that gave me the test said 2-3 days. So I guess the same day results test is for the one you have to pay for maybe? Regardless, I would definitely recommend that spot if you need to get tested.

EDIT: Even worse, I just got an email from them with my rapid antigen test results, for a swab…read morecollection that never happened! I called them and they said they cancelled it so my insurance won't be billed. They had no idea how a test result could have been produced for a sample collection that never even took place. I asked them for email confirmation that the charge to my insurance was cancelled, and they haven't provided anything. Yikes. I called ahead to check where the testing site would be because I know the address and had never seen any COVID testing there. The representative on the phone told me it would be outside in the parking lot under a blue tent. I showed up and there was no blue tent to be found. Called them and they said it's under a blue tent. Then they checked further and found it was actually inside an office today. Once there, I was asked to scan a QR code, which took me to a website where I was supposed to video chat with a random NP, which I had not been informed was a requirement for getting the PCR test through insurance. The call kept dropping and the employees told me to keep trying. It turned into too much of a hassle so I decided not to do the PCR there. I had also asked the employees if we could do the test outside, and they were like "... If you want, but you still need to do all the check-in here first." I had picked this location because the site and representative told me it would be outside and the reviews said the process would be easy. Looks like they need to work on their consistency.
