Dr. Mai is the best. You get her undivided attention when you see her, and she knows EVERYTHING (or so it seems). She listens and she's willing to work with you on whatever is bothering you, whatever you're worrying about. And if something is not a big deal, or is a waste of your time/money, she'll say so. She also knows who the best specialists are and you can be confident about her referrals. Yes, you pay an annual concierge fee to be her patient, but I think it's worth it. Also, after reading a couple reviews here, I want to say that yes, I have had to sit in in her waiting room for a while before, but not since she went concierge a couple years ago. And Dr. Mai has a sense of humor. So I can see being deathly sick with the flu and thinking it's NOT funny (or even OK) when your doctor says something like "join the club." But honestly I think it's a matter of humor and personality. She is not a jerk. I actually take comfort (and have a laugh) when I think I'm dying and someone tells me I've got some common illness, just like everyone else, and that I will survive. read more

I recently switched my health insurance and decided to designate Ann Mai as my primary physician based on the great yelp reviews. I was not disappointed! I made an appointment and had to wait 3 months for my first visit, but I wasn't in a hurry so I didn't mind. When I went in I discovered that Dr. Mai had closed herself off to any new patients for the next two years. Apparently, I made my appointment shortly before she stopped taking patients - whew. I waited about 20 minutes in the waiting room, they called me in, then I waited another 15 minutes before I got to see Dr. Mai. One reason why Dr. Mai decided to stop taking patients for the time being is precisely because she wanted to give more quality of care to her current patients. I can appreciate that. She walked in and she was SO YOUNG I was caught off guard! But she already has two teenage kids. I found out that she graduated med school at the age of 22 and had her kids at 24 while she was finishing up residency. Ask her to tell you her story, it's crazy! She's the sweetest person too. Anyway, while I was with her I felt completely cared for. She was very attentive and I never felt rushed... she really gave me her 100%. She does a lot of things online and is super tech savvy too, so you can pretty much ask her anything through the internet and she'll respond within 24 hours. read more

I saw Dr. Mai this morning for a skin issue. We also went over my latest blood test results. A couple of things didn't add up and I watched and listened as Dr. Mai asked me question after question to understand what might be happening with me. She figured out what was throwing my testing off and was obviously relieved when she explained it all to me. Her intelligence and education was so evident and I was impressed and feel so lucky to have her as my doctor. I'm healthy and I want to stay that way and believe that I'll lead a long and wonderful life with Dr. Mai as my doctor. read more

If you are looking for a doctor to prescribe blood pressure meds to you without scheduling a follow up appt. to see if they are actually WORKING then by all means book Dr. Mai. If you are looking for unfriendly back office staff who glare at you hatefully then book her. If you are looking for somebody who acts like she gives a rats behind about your health and your sickness then go elsewhere. The good thing about OC is that there is no shortage of doctors and some of them are actually kind and caring. I used to see her and I had so many issues with her but I was just too lazy to find another health care professional. I referred my husband to her a while ago and while he was in the examining room with the back office person getting ready for Dr. Mai to come in, the back office person said "You are aware that Dr. Mai is very attractive right? You won't be nervous to be around her will you"? Sweet Baby Cheeses I swear I'm not making this chit up and I believe my hubs, why would he make up something this outrageous? Good grief! Yes, Dr. Mai IS attractive but I don't think that it's appropriate to question a male patient about how he feels about having an attractive female as his doctor. Also, Dr. Mai has the empathy of a killer shark. Here is a direct quote that this healthcare "professional" said to me when I went to see her half dead with the flu: "JOIN THE CLUB"! She spat this out to me in the most hateful tone of voice I have ever heard in my entire life. Excuse me? Did this so called doctor, a person who is in a profession that provides help and care to sick people just actually tell me to "Join the club"? Yeah, ok...whatever lady. There I was, a patient who had good PPO insurance, not Medi-Cal, not some crappy HMO and this person just essentially told me to go take flying leap off the tallest building I could find. I don't care who somebody thinks they are, telling a patient something like that is uncalled for, unprofessional, out of line, rude, pompous, arrogant and a whole lot of other things that I'm too much of a lady to put into this review. Consistently Late, Unreliable and Expensive. I was a patient with Dr. Ann L Mai for 3 years(2016-2019) and have had a terrible experience. Her office hours are extremely inconvenient and are schedule around her personal obligations(8AM-3PM). She has been 30 minutes late to my appointments which were scheduled between 8am and 9am. She will within your first year charge you an annual membership fee to be a patient, which is a few hundred dollars on top of your normal Doctor visit fees. As a diabetic I require insulin and test strip refills every few months, she denied my mail order pharmacy's request to authorize my refill as she wanted me to come in for a check up, at this time I had moved out of state and was unable to. I asked her office to waive this visit requirement and refill my prescriptions one last time, only to find out she would be out of the office for a week. As a result I had to go to an urgent care to get an insulin prescription. I would not recommended Dr Ann L Mai to anyone who does not go schedule Doctor visits often but requires regular prescription refills to stay alive, like Type 1 diabetes. read more

I only go there when I have time and energy to deal with those mean people in the office. Specially when you are sick, when you are worrying about your health, I can guarantee you that you will get piss of by them. Dr Mai does not seem to put your health in her best interest. I wouldn't give any star for Dr. Mai or her staffs because the one who deserves the stars are the Nurses. I'm just another fired patient and the excuse was because it was "too much paperwork" for them. Dr. Mai is a very very very busy doctor, so I only met the Nurses for my appointments. One day I got into a car accident and had muscle spasm on my neck, Dr. Mai agreed to squeeze me in between her schedules. After was advised by the nurse, I clearly have told them that I'm not claiming it to my car insurance. But Dr. Mai thought that I am and months later she called to fire me because all the paperwork and said: "YOU MADE ME look like I'm committing a fraud!" After reading all other reviews experiencing the same thing, here are my suggestions: 1. You and your staffs need to work on your egos: you're not the best people in the world. 2. You need to think wisely before you do/say anything: we are human beings, not just your source of incomes. 3. I decided to switch to Ann Mai as my PCP after reading all the great reviews on yelp. Well, here's my experience: 1. Impossible to get a live person from the front desk to answer the phone or return calls. I left a message and never received a call back. I finally got someone on the phone the next day (but had to hold for a while). 2. Impossible to get an appointment. First physical was available almost 3 months later. Plus, I was informed by her staff that I can only see her AFTER the physical, and prior to that, if I have an issue, I have to go to urgent care. 3. Apparently, she has so many patients that she is hard to get an appointment with, and also, her front desk indicated that office wait does vary as she often runs late. Being a first time patient here means you must wait over a month to get your first appt. As you become more of a regular patient, more appts will become available for you. (This according to Dr. Mai) My first visit was pretty good despite the month long wait. The receptionist was very helpful and friendly. But then again, I was the first appt of the day. Dr. Mai herself was also very friendly and personable. I'm giving her office a 3-star for several reasons. 1) The office hours are not very accommodating to people who work weekdays. I wish they were open on Saturdays. 2) I recently called into the office to address a medication mix-up and the person who answered the phone, PAT, was completely rude and condescending. I was given a different medication and needed to speak to Dr. Mai regarding the changes and how to make the transition. This Pat had the nerves to tell me, "Well, isn't there instructions on the packet? Doesn't it tell you how to take it?" Well no duh sherlock. I know how to pop a pill in my mouth. Dr. Mai has been my doctor for over 10 years now. I love going to her office! Talking to her is like being with a bestie, girlfriend, big sister (although she's not that much older). She really shows concern towards you, and gives you great health tips. One of the things I value is that she is not that quick to prescribe medications - hence you are not over medicated. She gives you a chance to get healthy naturally, then with you, decides the next best option in regards to taking meds. She regularly discusses your medications and takes the time to listen to concerns, and opinions. She is straightforward without intimidating you. Plus she's so elegant! I've been going to Dr. Mai for a few years, she's fantastic. Hip, young, and really nice. She has a lot of patients so be ready with any questions if you have any. She's really gentle when it comes to the "female annual checkups". When I have an appointment, I usually wait no more that 10-15 minutes. Also, she's wired so all RX's and medical records are electronic. I love how I can ask for a refill, schedule and appointment, or ask the staff a question via a website. Over the weekend, I got really sick and called this morning. She had an appointment same day! I did wait awhile (but heck, can't complain) and she acknowledged she was running behind and got a little inundated with some last minute appointments (like me). I have been going to Dr. Mai for about 5 years now and she is the best! I love that she knows me and is very thorough when I come in. She is very tech savvy in that you can reach her online/via email and will send RX to your local pharmacy of choice. It makes communicating with her very easy and efficient. She is very professional but at the same time will ask how you are because she genuinely cares. The wait can be awhile sometimes depending on the case load she has that day. Nobody enjoys a visit to the doctors office. Least of all me when I have my annual "womanly" exam. But Dr. Mai is definitelty THE best when it comes to these kinds of exams. Friendly, gentle & efficient. Ladies, she is the cream of the crop! Dr. Mai was my primary care physician for about 2 years. She is one of the best doctors that I have ever had. She's honest, approachable, and she really does try to get to know you as a person not just a patient. She's young & hip but always professional. I never had any problems trying to get an prescription refill or even an appointment. She does get booked pretty fast though so keep that in mind. The office is paperless which means everything is done on the computer no actual paper charts which in my opinion is the best way to go. (I work in a M.D.'s office) You can also get lab results, appointments, etc through a website which is convenient. The staff is excellent. Very knowledgeable & eager to help. My only gripe with the office is the wait time. It can be random. I've waited over an hour to 5-10 minutes but I guess that can be attributed to the fact that she is a popular doctor & she sees many patients. She is worth the wait!!!! read more

I'm not neccesarily a "fan" of visiting any doctor, but Dr. Mai made it a very easy, and comfortable experience. As comfortable as you can be when you are having your annual women's exam. I had no problem on the phone when I was making an appointment, but I did schedule it 3 months ahead since Dr. Mai seemed pretty busy in the summer time. The staff was friendly, and Dr. Mai was warm, personable, and professional. She knows how to communicate with patients, and encourages questions. I also like how you can get all of your test results via online; which makes it very easy since I'm always on the internet. Dr. Mai has been my physician for 7+ years. She was referred to me by a coworker who has also been seeing her for a long period of time. I have never ever had a bad experience with her. I have always found her to be interested, attentive and very thorough. I make all my appointments with her as early in the morning as possible because that's what I like. I have had times where I was pretty sick and was seen right away and taken care of. I can count on my fingers only one time where my wait time was a little longer than 15 minutes in seven years. I love my doctor and would never say anything bad about her nor want to trade her for anyone else. I will keep seeing her as long as my insurance permits it. Dr. Mai is hands down, the best doctor I have ever been seen by! I had been having less than warm fuzzy feelings for my previous doctor of 5+ years after feeling like I was being judged and reprimanded every time I asked for any type of medical advice. A few of my coworkers were patients of Dr. Mai and had nothing but nice things to say about her. I took the plunge and made the switch! Office is small, clean and the office staff is extremely friendly. I've never had to wait very long in the waiting room, or exam room for that matter. Dr. Mai is warm and friendly, yet completely professional and very knowledgeable. Her tech savvy approach makes things super simple- requesting an appointment, refilling a prescription, asking a question, viewing lab results, etc. She is thorough, uses common sense instead of a '1 size fits all' approach, and explains things clearly and concisely. I never leave feeling rushed, or like I didn't get the answer I came in for. All the usual things I loathe when making a doctor's appointment don't seem to be an issue anymore- I couldn't be happier! read more

My appointment time was for 11:45am. I got into the office at 11:40am. I didn't get seen until 12:20pm. Why set appointment times when you can't abide by them? I don't have a long lunch break for this visit. Maybe they should start setting longer times for patient visits, because this is the most annoying thing ever. Waiting this long sucks. What I needed to see her for should not have even required an in office visit either. It's completely unprofessional. I'm sure if I came late though they'd give my appointment time away. After waiting one month for an initial appointment, I finally met Dr. Mai, and I can wholeheartedly say she was worth the wait. Before finding Dr. Mai, my general practitioner was another doctor who I grew to dread going to see. The experience would begin with a disinterested, frowning receptionist, followed by a long wait and then a march off to the scale with a nurse who seemed actively hostile. This would then be followed by another long wait, then a very brief visit by the distracted-seeming doctor, who (while at least not hostile like the rest of the staff) didn't seem at all interested in me as a human being, didn't give any details about procedures or results even if asked, prescribed treatments that my doctor sister said were highly questionable, and didn't make conversation. I was coming due for a fun test that we women have to get once a year, and was NOT going to do it again with this doctor (shocking discomfort and pain! At least buy me dinner first!) So, anyway, through some poking around online I found Dr. Mai, who has renewed my faith in medical practitioners. She is kind, friendly, knowledgeable, very thorough in her discussion of procedures and results, actively encourages questions, makes conversation and actually seems to care about me as an individual person. She sends test results very promptly and readily offers to refer to second opinions if desired. The receptionist and the staff in the office also actually make eye contact and smile! I found Dr Mai here on Yelp. I was very impressed by the reviews she had here. I figured I had nothing to lose since the OB/GYN I saw last May was terrible (I felt like a number there, was rushed wham-bam-thank you m'am style and even had a billing issue that's STILL not resolved) and the family doc I saw last Feb was awful as well (over 2 hour wait that the doctor laughed about when I finally got back to see him). I booked my appointment back in March since I knew it would take a while to get in. I kept thinking, I hope the wait it worth it. I filled out all of the paperwork ahead of time to save myself time. I found the office with no problem and I was early since I was coming from close by, at work. I got in, signed in, turned in all my paperwork, paid my copay, used the restroom and they took me right back. I was expecting to wait since I was 30 minutes early. The office is small but very clean. Height, weight, blood pressure, all the normal jazz and I was told to change and wait for doc, she'd be in soon. I didn't have too long of a wait... Maybe 15 minutes at the most. Again, since I was so early I was expecting to wait much more. Dr Mai came in and right away apologized for the wait I had. She was very personable. And someone else on here said she's hot... Heck yes she is! She really took the time to get to know a bit more about me, my husband, our family. I really appreciated that. She apologized for the wait from booking the appointment to seeing her but she explained that she likes to be able to spend time getting to know her long term patients. She stressed several times that she really got into practice to help people long term and be there for them. She spent about an hour with me going over my health history, the exam and answering any and all questions I had. I really felt like a patient and not just a number. She asked if my husband has a family doc (she I mentioned our terrible experience) and said he could book an appointment there. She mentioned they do have a male doc on staff for folks not comfortable seeing a female. I'll be booking him an appointment soon. I feel like I've found a doc that genuinely cares for the people she's treating... I am excited at the prospect of seeing here again next year! She is kind and caring and recently cut back on the number of patients so I was able to get in either same day or next day to be seen. I recently moved to Orange County and was looking for a professional (non-sales-y) and reliable physician. I found Dr. Mai on Yelp and decided to pay her a visit for an overall physical plus OBGYN needs. She exceeded all of my expectations! She is beyond professional and extremely knowledgeable in her field. She takes the time to explain everything and answer any questions, doesn't rush you AT ALL and really tries to get to know her patients personally. I hadn't had a physical exam in some time and she was thorough in making sure to answer and address all of my concerns. She didn't try to sell me the newest product or sneak up any ridiculous fees. The receptionists are very nice ladies and also professional. You can just tell that it is a healthy medical environment and that everyone working there is happy with their job, thus better customer care. Bottom line, I love, love this place and if I could give it 10 stars, I would! I look forward to continuing to go to Dr. Mai. read more

Another fired patient... Let me begin by saying that I am not the type of person to visit the doctor unless I think I am having a serious issue. On a previous visit, Dr Mai herself told me I should've come in earlier and to take better care of myself. So, when I experienced a constricting in my chest and subsequent tightness that lasted more than an hour, I had my husband call her office. They told me to come in and that Dr Mai would squeeze me in. Upon arrival, the 10-seat waiting room was full but the lady at the front desk informed me that most were there to see the other doctor and that there were 2-3 patients ahead of me. Rather than squeeze me in between her appointments, she left me and other patients sitting in the waiting room for 1-2 hours (one lady had a toddler waiting with her!). Having never experienced more than mild heartburn that subsided after 30 mins, I was worried that I might be having a heart attack. After waiting an hour and seeing others who came in after me getting in to see the doctor 10 mins after arriving, I inquired to the front desk staff when I might be seen (at this point, the once full waiting room had cleared out). I offered to leave and have my mother take me to urgent care, but that person informed me that my insurance wouldn't cover an urgent care visit unless Dr Mai referred me and basically I had no choice but to wait some more or leave unseen/untreated. Since there was nobody else there to see the doctor, I was called in 5 mins later. The nurse that took me to an exam room had the worst bedside manner. No warmth, compassion or even the slightest hint of interest as to why you were visiting. She told me to undress, stuck probes on me, turned on a machine for 20 secs and left. My mom was appalled at her bedside manner, but at that point I was just happy not to be in the waiting room anymore. Next, came the rudest awakening ever. After diagnosing my heart/chest issue as a strained muscle and prescribing some ibuprofen, she went on to berate me for upsetting her office staff and basically fired me as a patient. I was welcome to find another doctor that had less wait time and less experience than her. Furthermore, she said that there were 90 other doctors just sitting around at Hoag hospital that would welcome my business. But, she unfortunately has too many patients. In her words, "many patients have tried other doctors, but always come crawling back". Talk about arrogant. I explained that I had never had a heart issue before and was afraid that I might be having a heart attack. She said that I wasn't a 90 year old woman with heart problems (so apparently not a priority) and that when a patient walks into the waiting room, they are triaged according to a chart. But, rather than communicate anything to me, the office staff let in every single patient ahead of me, even those who only waited for 10 mins. If Dr Mai wasn't able to see me until after the VERY last appointment, why not tell me to come in closer to when they close for lunch so myself and others in the waiting room aren't fuming after waiting for 2 hours?!? After scolding me like a 13 year old, my mother yelled at her for being unprofessional and we left...only to be asked for the co-pay on the way out. *Note that I found Dr Ann Mai last year from all the glowing reviews on Yelp. I had seen her 2 times previously and had no issues. But, after my last visit, I felt compelled to write a review (which is something I NEVER do because it's time consuming). Was I ever surprised to see that the most current reviews are VERY poor. read more

I signed up for Yelp JUST so i can write this review! I just called to make an appointment with Dr. Mai, but the front desk receptionist, Michelle, was SO RUDE. She felt arguing with me over the phone about my insurance and about what I wanted to get done. Her attitude was so rude. She kept saying "Dr. Mai is booked out" which i have no idea what that even means and when i asked her, she was impatient. If Dr. Mai wants to have new patients come to her office, i suggest she do something about michelle because i was so mad that i decided not even to come in and see Dr. Mai. I wanted to get a general physical without a PAP and a TB test and Michelle kept saying "they are the same thing" and i kept saying, "no its not, i have a gyno already i just want a physical without a pap" and she kept saying, "its the same thing" SERIOUSLY? i got so annoyed i was like, forget it, I don't want to come in anymore because if i have to interact with this girl again. I'm gonna lose it! grr. I'm sure Dr. Mai is great, but she needs new office staff or Dr. Mai needs to talk to her office staff, MICHELLE because when i started to address michelle's impatience and TONE towards me over the phone, she just laughed.... very unprofessional. read more

If you are a new patient, do not go here. 1) You have to wait more than an hour to see your doctor 2) Your first appointment will be two to three months away 3) When you are actually sick, they'll send you to urgent care 4) Two out of three staff were consistently rude to me and actually started lecturing me when I told her I did not want a PAP smear. (What's the deal? Most people get their PAP smear done by their OBGYN's. I don't understand why she continued to make such a big deal about it. Dr mai is only good at referring you to other specialists. I cant say she actually ever treated me for anything herself. The other dr that sees her parients when she can not starts with a P is wonderful. Dr. Mai was my primary care physician for a couple years, but I decided to switch because the wait times were just too long. I waited 1 1/2 hours for my first appointment, for which she apologized. However, I soon learned that was routine; I never saw the doctor within an hour of my appointment time, even if I was the first patient of the day. Once, I was directed to the office instead of urgent care when I was sick and spent 2 feverish hours there before I could see the doctor. Unfortunately, I had to even come in for simple prescription adjustments. When I did call afterhours with a medical issue, I always got a response within a few hours with the greenlight to see urgent care or with a prescription sent to the pharmacy. Though her medical approach is little conservative and she tended to give dumbed-down explanations, she was warm and friendly - but rushed. In fact, she would head out the door to her next patient as I was still asking questions (and I barely asked any). I rarely saw her for more than 5 minutes unless it was an annual physical. Also, whenever I called in with a question, the front desk took a message and never called back. Of course, I should've seen this coming - I had to book my first appointment 3 months in advance. I read great reviews about Dr.Mai and thought my wife and I would make an appointment with her. After waiting 3 months for a visit, we where seen by Dr.Mai. Dr. Mai is very smart, however, after our first initial visits there, we fell into situations in which a patient would need their doctor and we were treated like clients and not patients. Everything had a fee whether it was calling in a prescription or a second copy of lab, you had to pay the same price that you pay to see the physician for any help outside a visit. When my wife was sick and tried making an appointment, Dr Mai was out of town.The office was able to contact her to send a prescription but they wanted to charge a fee to send to the pharmacy(Keep in mind she was out of town and unable to see her).We feel that we couldn't contact Dr.Mai office for any help as our doctor in fear of getting charged if we need anything. Oh I forgot to mention that even if I wanted to pick up the second lab or prescription there was still a charge. They stated that the fees was with our initial paperwork, but you would ever think that a doctors office would charge even if the doctor is out and your are sick. read more

I have been unsatisfied with my primary care physician of approx. 6 years. After finding Dr. Mai on Yelp, I decided to switch but was shocked at the long waiting period to see her. Nevertheless, I switched over and during the course of 1 year, I had seen her associate doctors, as well as my previous Dr. (when I couldn't get a soon enough appt.) I have PPO, so it wasn't a problem. Recently, I had a non-urgent issue so I made an appointment to finally meet Dr. Mai. All I have to say is that SHE WAS WORTH THE WAIT! During my appointment, Dr. Mai was super-attentive, understanding, relatable, and patient. She never once left the room to split time between patients or calls. That is a huge difference between ex-Dr.-who-shall-not-be-named. My visit was very thorough and I couldn't have been happier. I probably had a good 30 min. of undivided attention. I also have to say, having seen her associates: Dr. Wikle and Dr. Bajpai(sp?), they are also EXCELLENT, through, and caring. I am officially denouncing ex-Dr.'s office! read more

I know Dr. Mai has 2 kids already, but do you Yelpers she'll want to adopt one? Specifically, one named Allyson M? LOL! I had a bit of a freak out when I got my lab results back and sent Dr. Mai an e-mail. She responded in like a nanosecond and said she'd squeeze me in the next day to ease my worries. She went over my labs very thoroughly and prevented me from having a superduper freakout. Thank you Dr. Mai. I am so glad I decided to switch to you as my PCP. Dr. Mai is wonderful! I was a former patient that was very excited to hear that I was able to come back! The front desk staff are polite, prompt, and pleasant. I didn't have the best experience with doctors in the past who wouldn't find the causes of my problems. Dr. Mai was quick to get the proper testing ordered and eager to help find solutions immediately. She communicates results quickly so you are not left worried about your condition. I've never written a negative review before. I waited 6 weeks to see Dr. Mai on a friend's recommendation. I called the office 25 min before my first appointment and staff said she was ontime. After waiting ONE HOUR, staff told me she was with a patient, and still had another one to see before me. They could not give me any idea how long it would take to get to me. !!?? Neither Dr. Mai nor the staff were apologetic. The staff just said: She spends the time she needs with patients. That's great, but then they should schedule accordingly. I have never walked out of on a doctor's appointment, but I did this time -- and went across the street to a lovely doctor who saw me within 5 minutes of my appointment. Unless Dr. Mai has magical healing powers, I can't imagine why people with full lives put up with this disrespectful service. I should have listened to the other reviews saying similar things -- I just thought they were difficult people, but now I know they were the reasonable ones. read more

I have only good hings o say about this place! I was able to be seen that same day. I almost had to go to the ER and they were able to see me. I know I had to wait my turn as other has schedule way ahead their app. The staff is friendly and upbeat. Always smiling and making feel welcome. Had an 11:30 appointment, but arrived at 11:10. I had already printed off New Patient forms and filled them out before I went in for my appointment, which I recommend-it was a timesaver! Within 5 minutes I was in the exam room, and less than 10 minutes later Dr. Mai came in. She was super sweet and just gorgeous. My exam went smoothly, and she answered all my questions and offered great suggestions and advice. I didn't feel rushed, but I was back in my car at 11:40 on the dot. I've never had such a fast appointment, and everyone--nurse, receptionist, doctor--were all great. So happy to have found my new doctor! read more
