Very disappointed with their organization at the front register. After a 50 minute wait, I was given my take out order. 2 other guests went home with nothing. Good Chinese in Ozark - super clean dining rooms - comfy. I think it might be the best Oriental restaurant in/around SPRINGFIELD.

My family and I went out of our way to eat at Yen Ching, due to reviews and such. To sum it up, we were far less than impressed. Here are a few reasons: - The place was dirty. The table and chairs looked like they had only been brushed off and not really cleaned. The floor was sticky. Some of the plates and utensils were not clean. - Concerning the sweet and sour chicken, it seemed to be cooked with breast meat strips that were cut into chunks. When cooking this type of chicken, it is best to use dark meat. White meat dries out and gets tough. Dark meat is more oily and stays tender. Also, the sauce was not very good. It was too sour. - The fried rice was not really fried. It was basically steamed rice with a few vegetables in it for filler. I would suggest actually frying it and leaving out the filler vegetables - peas, carrots, etc. - The sweet tea was barely sweet and did not have a "tea" flavor. A Chinese restaurant should have very flavorful sweet tea where the sweetness complements and enhances the tea flavor. - It was far too overpriced. For example, a side of fried rice was $8.95. To sum it up, I have had better "Chinese" food in a strip mall. I was expecting something closer to authentic Chinese food, but apparently what this is is an attempt to cook something similar to Chinese food without knowing how to cook Chinese food. I have seen this before where the people doing the cooking were not Chinese at all, just teenagers with an after school job. Anyway, I can mark this one off my list of places to visit again. I would also strongly suggest considering other places for Chinese food. read more

Yen Ching was a delight! After a much needed dinner break on the way back from Branson, this was an excellent choice. Just off the highway (which they also have advertisement on the highway exit signs), it was pretty easy to find. The outside of the building is nothing special but very well kept. Upon entering, it was also well kept, clean and very friendly. The waitress was very polite and always kept our drinks filled. The menu selections were pretty average for this type of restaurant but they had a few specialites also. We ended up ordering General's Chicken to share with egg rolls and crab rangoon to start. From beginning to end, everything was great. My only "complaint" would be that the General's Chicken was marked as spicy and it was not spicy at all! Great flavor, but no spice. So for Chinese food in Ozark, I would say this is the best place that is casual dining ( I consider Maru's to be a step up and a little more dressy). The food is really good and the place is really clean which you do not always find in this area. Serving staff is pretty good and really move with a purpose. I would not recommend the lemonade as it is a different very watered down taste. I switched to a coke and there was a fortune cookie paper in the glass which can happen anywhere so I can let that go. This is our favorite "Chinese" place in all the land. My favorite dish is Happy Family. Hubs loves the crab rangoon and their fried rice. The menu is fairly diverse and has all the classics like broccoli beef and moo goo along with some more unique things to try. They don't have much in the way of sushi or dessert, but it's enough to keep the kids happy. The best part of eating in at Yen Ching's is definitely the atmosphere. The two dining areas are somewhat different, and it seems there's new decor every time we visit. They do a good job of seating adult diners and families separately so everyone can enjoy. As far as Chinese goes around the Springfield/Branson area, I've never found a better place than this. Food is amazing. Atmosphere is super cool. Nice bar. The cashew chicken, spicey cashew chicken, and general chicken are my favorites, but they have some delicious, more traditional Chinese/Korean dishes too. Nice array of tea options. I like Yen Ching a lot. They have good food and the service is always quick and friendly. We have been here many times. My favorite item on the menu is the pan fried noodles, but I also have enjoyed several other dishes including the general chicken, sweet & sour chicken, and cashew chicken. My husband recently ordered a squid dish and I can't remember what it was called but it was really good and I will probably order that the next time we visit. They have on their menu a combo meal that lets you mix and match items like sweet & sour chicken and cashew chicken, which is great if you can't make your mind up and have a pretty hearty appetite. The portions are huge and we almost always have leftovers. If you order a dish like cashew chicken, it will come with a side of rice. I like that the rice is served separately so I can mix it in with my meal if I choose to. If several in the group order dishes with rice sides, they will sometimes simplify the meal and bring out one big bowl of rice to pass around family style. We think for the price, this is one of the better Asian food options in Ozark. Plus, they have a nice selection of bottled beer, with domestic beers priced around $3.75. read more

My favorite by far is the Yen Ching Cashew Chicken. If you aren't from Springfield then Springfield Cashew Chicken is just gross. Yen Ching Cashew Chicken is the real deal. Now this is what a Chinese restaurant is supposed to be like! Mrs Wales had the snow pea beef and found it to be tender and tasty-a little salty but definitely worth a return visit. I couldn't find what I wanted so I asked for, and they accommodated me, a dish of spicy orange peel beef. It came with fried rice and was a very generous portion. We are getting out of here for about $35 and it was worth every penny. There's no buffet and no drive through. It's a quiet and classy setting worth taking your time to visit and maybe stretching your palate. It is hands down the best Chinese restaurant in the Springfield metropolitan area. Not growing up in Springfield, I have a different idea of what Chinese food should be. These guys do it right! Hot and fresh everytime. The egg drop soup has vegetables in it and lacks the unnatural neon yellow coloring of most egg drop soups. Cashew Chicken in a stirfry instead of chunks of fried chicken covered in gravy (never fear...they have that crap too if that's what you're into.) I haven't found anything on the menu that has been mediocre yet...and that's saying a lot in the Ozarks. read more

Great spicy cashew chicken... this is "Springfield style", which means the oyster based sauce is pretty close in consistency to gravy (a nice cornstarch slurry base). The chicken is battered and deep fried. All that being said, it's REALLY good. I can't wait to come and have some more next time I visit my family. This was the worst meal I have eaten in 7 years I eat Chinese food at least once if not twice a month, all across the east coast and mid-west. This is the worst not just Chinese meal I have had, but the worst restaurant meal my family has had in 7 years. Let me count the ways: Price: Each meal was about $2 more than any other restaurant I visit with similar atmosphere and offerings, to include the NE. Serving Size: Portions were less than half of an ordinary lunch serving, I guess they were running out of food because they forgot to give us hardly any. The spring roll that comes with lunch, I did not know they make them so small-why bother?? 1 1/2" long MAYBE and gooey inside. Pre-packaged: My kids like fried rice but cannot eat egg. From fancy to back street 'dives' EVERY Chinese restaurant I have EVER been to has ALWAYS been able to make fried rice for us without the egg. They could not because they make it in bulk not fresh to order. We concluded they do the same with white rice, maybe saving it from the day before and microwaving it for an order-dry and tasteless. Taste: Was none. I ordered Schezuan Vegetable because I love spicy food. Menu clearly indicates in the red text that it is a spicy dish. The sauce was thin and tasted like bath water, only bath water usually has a taste and this sauce had no taste. NONE, not that it was not spicy, which it was not, IT WAS TASTELESS. Same for the broccoli beef dish, sauce was runny, only it had a taste-salt, overpowering and was the ONLY taste, salt. Preparation: Bean sprouts were overcooked, broccoli on mine and broccoli beef was under cooked. Service: Slow. We were there for a week day lunch, there were a few people in, but it took a while for the waiter to come around to us, food delivery was slow. I mentioned how we had been on the road and really was thirsty, we wanted large waters, then I had to ASK for mine to be refilled. Plates not removed, had to ASK for the bill. Customer needs: Since we cannot eat eggs and all the soups had eggs I asked if they would substitute won ton strips for the soup, which he did, he brought a TINY plate of strips-ONE tiny plate to replace THREE bowls of soup. Was there anything good? Well, the bathroom was clean. Why people waste their money for overpriced, tiny portions I don't know, this was horrible. read more

Great for takeout or eating there. Service is top notch, they know just how to leave you alone the right amount but take care of you when you need help. Always whatever we order is good. We did go once with a large group and ended up with everyone drinking Pepsi when we had ordered tea, but that could have been a misunderstanding as we were having a lot of fun and probably not clear to the server.
