Our party of 4 went here on Christmas Eve. Two of our party are regulars here, I'd been one other time. IT WAS INSANE BUSY on this night. We had about a 45 minute wait. I don't feel I can give a genuine review of more than my meal because it was so crazy. I ordered the Crispy Orange Shrimp. By the time I got my meal I was almost malnourished. So I woofed down every bite even though it really had no real spicy flavor to it. I did taste orange, but that was about it. The portion was decent, as I said, I ate it all. This is a Nice little gem at Hull Street and Genito Rd. Service is quick and friendly. The quality of the dishes are a step above most of the Chinese restaurants in the area. The prices are inline with the quality. I have not had a dish that has disappointed me or my family yet. I have also brought co-workers and friends to Yen Ching as well and none had any complaints, just compliments stating "delicious" and "flavorful". The restaurant had a nicer interior, different rooms, areas for seating, regular tables, booths, nice open windows, etc, you get the picture. When walking in, the reception welcomed us and got our table, our waitress was friendly and checked up on us regularly. I heard about their special that serve a whole fish and was told that the fish would be included with mixed vegetables for $30! I thought I was getting a good deal until I got my food, there was no vegetables included with the fish. The fish dish felt a little flat for me and didn't taste fresh either. It tasted dry and my mom was not pleased with it either. It was not bad by any means, but in comparison of the other Chinese restaurants I have visited, I was not impressive. There were no other veggies on the dish. and the dish was filled with a lot of oil. I also was not too thrilled when I found a strand of HAIR in my food which makes me drop a few stars. This is my favorite Chinese place down in Chesterfield! I have been coming here for probably the past 20 years and it's consistently delicious! I have my favorites: orange chicken, general Tsos, shrimp fried rice, shrimp low mein and beef and broccoli. Really great dishes! I have now turned my boyfriend onto it! So I came in this week to get some pick up orders of chicken low mein and shrimp low mein. Lack of portion on the shrimp in our lo mein and rice. Our crab rangoons didn't come with sauce and guys there's literally noooo way these were made fresh. Get the dumpling appetizer and if you're still hungry after that try the chicken and broccoli or the Yen Ching fried rice. Delivery usually takes 35-45 minutes from placing order to doorbell ringing. I would say it's okay, tried this place today and while it's Chinese food it's not like spectacular or anything special about it. I'm not going to go back because I personally did not like the fried rice, it tasted overwhelming like pepper. The egg rolls were EXTREMELY greasy and my husband was not impressed by the sweet and sour chicken, it was not the normal sauce nor the chicken was more fried than it was tempura battered. My food took 2 hours to get here, when I tried to call the line was busy, then when i got through they put me on hold for 10 minutes. Then the employee asked for my phone # to track my order, then put me on hold for even longer. *Takeout Review* I went to Yen Ching for takeout after playing basketball in the area. We were greeted by an employee after entering. I ordered General TSO chicken, honey shrimp, and fried rice. The General TSO chicken was tasty. My favorite item was Yen Ching honey shrimp. The shrimp was big and flavorful in my opinion. Their fried rice was good as well. I am of Chinese ethnicity and did not care for the food. I dined with a friend who is white and he loved the food. If you like Americanized Chinese food, this place is for you. One dish we ordered was the "Special Chinese Steak." There was nothing Chinese about it. The steak was served as a single piece, along with a steak knife, rather than being cut into pieces for eating with chop sticks. It was served on a sizzling fajita platter (!), which ended up overcooking the steak. Already cooked mixed vegetables, in a brown sauce, were poured on top of the steak and platter, which had the benefit of making the mixed vegetables piping hot. Another dish we ordered was the "Scallops & Shrimp Combination in Tangy Sauce." It was lukewarm. It included the same mixed vegetables as the Special Chinese Steak dish, plus baby corn. It also seemed to come with the same brown sauce as for the Special Chinese Steak dish, except it was spicy (I suppose, to make it "tangy"). We also ordered a pot of tea. When I opened the lid to the steel pot I saw that the tea was frothy. When the froth died down, I saw no tea leaves. The tea tasted very cooked. This is all consistent with tea being brewed in a huge urn (requiring very few tea leaves), where a spigot is then pulled to fill up individual tea pots. Rice was served in individual bowls. The rice had crusted over, as if a certain amount of time had passed after the bowls were filled with the rice. The rice was not hot - a sin for a Chinese restaurant. But hey, my friend loved the food. What I did not finish, he did! A big plus for this restaurant is that it is one of the cleanest and best decorated Chinese restaurants I have ever been to in the Richmond area. read more

This was our go-to Chinese restaurant until we discovered something closer to where we live with better fried rice. Very clean with great staff up front to take your order. This is not one of those places where you can't understand a single word from the person at the register. This place is in the top 1/3 of expensive Chinese restaurants - you get better quality and flavor in my opinion. That being said we kept looking for a less expensive place that had the same quality and flavor. I believe we found that with the Fortune Bowl restaurant but it turns out not to be much cheaper. I used to get the lomain here and my wife centered around the fried rice and sesame chicken (as well as other similar chicken variations). I have had the seafood based items and was not impressed - nor disappointed. The lack of flavor in the sauces and the seafood were the driving cause - this is better than flavorful seafood that full of bad flavors like iodine and fishiness because of poor quality. Foul taste being outclassed by lack of taste is not an endorsement of the seafood items: save your money and get the pork. Those items are ok but they cost more and you can get as much enjoyment or more out of other menu items for less. They have some obscenely Americanized (over saturated with sugar, starch, sauce, and grease) if you order some of the shrimp or sweet and sour pork items. They have nice containers (metal free boxes, and tight snapping lids on plastic containers). I have always been pleased with the soups although I stopped ordering them because they are overpriced more than other items in my opinion. Hot and sour is among one of my favorite items on the menu. Unfortunately I found that even the cheap and nasty looking Chinese restaurant near my house makes similarly good lomain. That is half because the lomain here isn't that good and lomain tends to (not should) be a simple and greasy food item. The lack of variety of vegetables and flavor in the meat in the lomain lets the $5/$6 price point Chinese restaurants keep pace with Yen Ching on this item. Other items that is not even close to being the case. I like my fried rice to have peas, a healthy portion of onion, and if I am lucky some chunks of pork in it. Yen Ching only has the onion, unless you specifically order the fried rice entree. I always fee like I don't get enough rice (fried or white) with my order and frequently boil a pot of rice to supplement the meager supplied amounts rather than pay for additional rice. They don't always charge you for additional rice but it is almost impossible to read the tickets at a Chinese restaurant. I can't contradict the poorer reviews of this restaurant - I agree with them on the items they describe. This restaurant has 2 and 3 star items and if you aren't careful and order all those you won't get the 4 stars I awarded the restaurant. read more

We had driven by Yen Ching's several times a week for the last four years wondering if it was any good. So, on a whim one day, we decided to find out. Wow, I wish we had checked it out sooner. Great place. Bright, clean, and spacious. The wait staff were extremely good and professional. The food was some of the best we have had in Midlothian. We have tried several restaurants and finally settled on Inter China on Midlothian Tpk., but this place beats them. I had the Kung Pao chicken and it was very good and my wife had chicken with broccoli and enjoyed it. The meal included egg rolls and we both noticed that they were less greasy than most places we have visited. We had lunch which has a limited menu, but we asked about the dinner menu and were shown a menu. Very extensive and we plan to return soon. read more

After reading about the different regions of China that are represented here on the restaurants website, I thought this might be a bit more authentic than the typical "American-Chinese" most of us are used to, so I surprised my Chinese girlfriend, who is from Hong Kong, and took her here for dinner tonight. The restaurant itself looks pretty neat. The exterior is fancy, and we were seated in the back area which was almost entirely windowed overlooking a grassy section and the street. It was actually pretty nice, visually. Though the icicle-style Christmas lights hanging at the tops of the windows seemed a little tacky and the tables were really close together. Although there was only one other couple seated in that section, we were seated right next to them, maybe only three feet away. This was a little awkward as I felt I had to whisper to respect the other diners. The music was some tasteful classical music. Moonlight Sonata and the like. My girlfriend stated, after careful inspection, that the menu appeared to be a mix of some authentic items and some things that typical Americans would expect at a Chinese restaurant. We ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings, the crispy chicken, and the double fried hot pork. We both asked for white rice when given the option of white or fried, but our waiter brought one white and one fried, which he quickly apologized for and replaced. The food is presented family style with serving spoons, so you can order a mix of entrees and share. Regardless, I enjoyed it all. The vegetable dumplings were far beyond (in a good way) my expectations. I think they may have been made fresh, as they took slightly over 15 minutes to prepare (a fact our waiter politely warned us about before we ordered). However, they were worth the wait. The filling was very good. I've had crispy chicken before at a certain buffet I frequent, but this was far superior. It was crispy yet still edible, while the buffet version I had more resembled super tough leather. The flavor felt superior as well. The double fried hot pork was a first for me so I don't have much to compare it to, but it was really good, though I didn't think it was hot (even remotely) at all, it still had good flavor, just not the kind that you'd think of as spicy unless you have absolutely no heat tolerance. The staff was very friendly, although not very talkative. Our waiter did mess up on the rice, and refilled my Dr Pepper with Pepsi, but both times I brought it to his attention and he very quickly resolved the situation. This Chinese restaurant is definitely one of the better ones in my opinion. The food here definitely has a better flavor than most Chinese restaurants that I have been to. Its a little more expensive then the ones you see in most shopping centers but it wont break the bank. I ordered the Crab Rangoon, beef with broccoli and sesame beef. The Crab Rangoon was delicious. Not too cream cheesy or sweet. The beef and broccoli was just as good. The broccoli was crunchy and fresh and the beef was tender and full of flavor. But the sesame beef was oh so good. Its not saucy like General Tso's Chicken, its like a glaze on deep fried beef. Man this was such a good dish. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The service was good. The waiter checked on us periodically and always refilled our waters. Very attentive but not too talkative. The overall experience of the restaurant was a good one.
