Yellow River Park is a multi-use park operated by Gwinnett County, located a few miles southeast of Stone Mountain on the Yellow River, which is one of the feeder rivers into the Ocmulgee. The park supports horse riding, bicycling and a limited amount of hiking. There is a large pavilion for group activities near the main multi-use parking area, with rest rooms and a playground. The bicycling parking area also has restrooms and there is a group campground nearby with a smaller pavilion and a few fire rings. The equestrian parking area has limited facilities other than a parking area designed to accommodate horse trailers. I came here to check out the potential for hiking trails. Unfortunately, that is not what this park is about. The multi-use area has a paved loop path about a mile long which runs past a large open grassy field. Off that path, there is a short trail to an observation deck overlooking the river. There, if you go down a dirt trail on the side of the deck, you can get down to the river. It's not a maintained trail and it doesn't go far. There is also a longer dirt trail that parallels the paved path along the river, but it's still pretty short. On the other end on the paved loop there's a dirt path that runs that direction along the river. Again, not very long but you can get right on the river. The park has a ton of bike trails and I imagine you can use them for hiking if you are careful to watch for riders. I saw no bike riders on a quiet Monday morning. My impression of this park was fairly benign at first - it's a place where locals can come for casual walks, biking and maybe picnicking. Horse riding, too. But then I noticed that as I framed my photographs, particularly on the few dirt trails near the river, I had to work to keep unsightly trash out of view of the lens. I realized that there is a hell of a lot of trash in this park. And not just stuff carried to shore by the river - although there's enough of that, too - but garbage that uncaring visitors just seem to dump as they walk. Done with that Pepsi? No problem - just let it go and gravity will do its thing. Want to drink a few beers by the river? Great idea and no need to pack out the empties I guess. Skittles packet empty? Let the breeze take it away. I could go on and on. The photos I took of the river required quite a bit of framing to keep the trash (mostly) unseen. The pictures look nice but I was fairly disgusted by what I saw. Yellow River Park is the trashiest park I've visited in recent memory. You might not think that if you stick to the paved loop or the grassy areas. Those apparently are kept up and treated better (although not well enough). But step off onto a dirt path and you'll see how the people treat this park. In fairness, The garbage seemed a lot worse in the multi-use area than in the bike area. I walked a few trails there and didn't see an inordinate amount of trash. If I ever return, it will be with a trash bag.

One of Gwinnett's hidden gems for camping. Nice, flat camping area. Utilities. Clean restrooms. Great staff.

Beautiful but busy park. We went on New Years Day and I was surprised at how busy Nice walking trails. My dogs loved going down by the river. I will have to go back another time when it is not so crowded.

    Kids love finding hidden treasures.

It's a beautiful and pleasant place to walk. I especially loved the fact that the nature is in tact and not over groomed.

Awesome park! Great trials that go along the River and cool places to hangout and eat on the rocks or get some sun! 100% recommend.

Ask the Community - Yellow River Park

I am seeing conflicting info on the net regarding the hours of this park. Can anyone clarify what time it opens and closes?

From what I saw on signs posted throughout the park: basically dusk to dawn (sun up to sun down). Hope this helps.

Totally cliché, but I'm going to daringly say that Henderson Park has something for everyone. When…read moreI was there, I observed a kids soccer game, picnickers, hikers, dogs being walked by their owners, Girl Scouts having a meeting, fisherpeople, photoshoots, children playing, birthday parties, and people just chilling by the lake. Seriously, that's nearly everyone who wants to be outside! Regarding hiking, the trails are not marked very clearly. The map doesn't show all the turnoffs, and it gets confusing. Maybe it's this way to give you a sense of adventure? At least it's tough to get really lost since you're often within sight of houses or the road. Beautiful woods! As for restrooms, there was a porta potty in the parking lot adjacent to the playground by Lake Erin, and the map indicates that there are other restrooms in Henderson Park too. Speaking of maps, I might recommend a quick peek at one before you go since the park can be accessed from different roads (Henderson and Livsey). Didn't get to explore the other side of the park with the native plant and wildlife walk this trip but next time!

This is a great neighborhood park. If I lived nearby, I'd take a walk here every chance I could. In addition to the trails, there are athletic fields, a kids play area and a great wide deck where people can look out at the lake or eat a nice lunch. There is a lot of parking and the park itself is well-maintained. I was able to find a map of the park trails online, and it was helpful but trail maps aren't perfect. I tried to walk as many of the trails as I could, but I was turned around a lot. We'd also had a lot of rain prior to my visit so a lower trail path by the lake was flooded. There is a small waterfall in the park, and I think I saw it but I'm not sure. There were a lot of rock formations in the creeks/streams, and none were labeled. I went to Henderson Park with a friend who needed to use the bathroom. The main bathrooms are located on the west end of the park by the soccer fields. On the east end of the park, there are port-a-potties. There are no bathrooms near the kids park which was a surprise and why I mention where the bathrooms are located. Overall, I'm glad that I gave Henderson Park a visit. The people who live nearby are lucky to have it.

This park is connected to a beautiful cemetery with such interesting history and views. It is so calming walking the paved paths amongst the burial sites and seeing the love and adoration of the families caring for their ancestors' resting places over the years. This park also has a tennis court, a public pool, a basketball court, a small baseball field, a general field, a pond, and a playground. It is clean and quiet, and those visiting the park are incredibly friendly. I tend to rate parks based on their visitors, and most of my "good evenings" were met with a very pleasant response unlike some of the more busy parks in ATL. There were families riding their bikes together, couples strolling amongst the graveyard, an older gentleman fishing in the pond, young men competing on the basketball court, people respectfully walking their dogs, a yoga session happening in the field and much more. This park is a catch-all for any age and experience. I'm sure I'm missing some of the amenities -- it has a lot to offer. Shout out to Decatur for maintaining this little gem. I highly recommend.

I've been here before for one of the Halloween events, but this day in particular I was here to actually enjoy the park in broad daylight and not at night. This is definitely the place to get a good workout in. You can walk around the mountain, which is a 5 mile walk or you can walk up the mountain which is 1 mile up. Honey, let me tell you that 1 mile up is not a joke, but you feel so good once you get to accomplish it and see all the other people attending to walk up the mountain. This is a experience for all age groups. The elderly were out there. The young was out there. The middle age was out there. Everyone was there having a good time, exercising and getting in a good stroll in the park. The Rangers are also out in the park for any assistance that you need as well. I thought I was gonna need them plenty of time when I attempted to go up the mountain, but I did just fine and I survived. I prefer to go around the mountain in the 5 mile walk where you see lots of people either on bikes, skates or walking their dog or pushing their kids in strollers it's a great experience and a good walk especially after the weather is decent.
