Intimate and traditional local neighborhood sushi spot. We decided last minute to walk over to Yashima, and I was pleasantly surprised as the entire staff was Japanese. It wasn't very busy so we were able to sit down, order, and receive our food all in a timely timeframe. The servers were both very nice and accomodating. The taste of the bento box salon and chicken were perfection -- cooked well and nothing was too salty.

This is a cute little hole in the wall for some traditional and classic Japanese sushi. It contains a small sushi bar area with few tables filled with wooden decor. We opted for a chirashi gold and a mix of various different nigiri sushi. The fish was really fresh but I prefer my rice less mushy and with a tad more vinegar. The staff was really nice even though they were under staff and asked us how everything was constantly. Parking in the front and rear.

Came here for lunch with my daughter and will not be returning. The lady who works there is super rude! The restraunt was not busy at all on a Friday afternoon at 1:15pm. She took our order and began brining out our food. I had to remind her to bring our drinks as we had our food but no drinks. Then in the middle of eating she brings the check out. I didn't ask for it nor was I no where near close to being finish it's as if she was rushing us out because they close at 2. Only checked in on us once to see how we were doing. It really ticks me off how people who have a business have no manners. Also my bill was $55 and I left a $0 tip what do you want a tip for? For being an asshole. & after the fact I paid my bill she still didn't say thank you. Also it was 106 and it was hot in there only a fan circulating so if you want to have lunch or dinner here prepare to roast!!

Stopped by Yashima Japanese Restaurant and honestly this is one of those solid local spots you're glad you found. Definitely a bit of a hole in the wall, but that's part of the charm. The workers are super sweet and make you feel welcomed right away. The fish is good quality, especially for the price. Nothing overhyped, just fresh, well prepared, and consistent. You can tell this is a place locals keep coming back to. I've already been back and brought friends, and they all liked it too. Overall, fair prices, good food, and a laid back vibe. This is the kind of neighborhood spot you keep in rotation.

I've been coming to Yashima since I was a little kid and it truly is a small hidden gem in Covina. I've always wanted to gatekeep this spot, but it truly is a spot that deserves recognition! The owner Sachiko is the sweetest lady ever and it hurts my heart that she is retiring and ownership is changing. But she has been here for about 40 years, so she deserves the retirement. The sushi and food is always such great quality and everything is truly super fresh. I love how they also offer plate combinations on their menu if you want to try a little bit of everything. I will say the place isn't your upscale sushi restaurant, but it hits the spot when it comes to the food. Don't expect anything fancy. It truly is known for the food quality sushi and community vibes. Gonna miss Sachiko!!!

After some 49 years running her own Sushi Restaurant- Sachiko is finally retiring. We will miss her and new ownership will take over . We've known her for more than 28 yrs and hubby from the time they opened up. One the BEST , fresh & Japanese owned sushi restaurant in the area. I highly recommend to you YASHIMA - check it out here in Covina on Rowland St. if you're in the area. Sushi Chef Hideo will be there to serve you the best of the best !

    Chirashi bowl soooo good!

We've been coming here for years, and it never disappoints. If you're in the area and looking for authentic, consistently great sushi, this is the spot. The fish is always fresh, the food is delicious, and the service is fast and attentive. A true hidden gem in Covina!

    Must order "garlicky edamame"

We happened to be in Covina area and decided to try Yoshima.. Wow, I had such a wonderful experience at this charming little spot! The food was definitely the highlight -- every dish was packed with flavor and made with obvious care. The garlic edamame was incredibly tasty, perfectly seasoned and impossible to stop snacking on. The chicken yakitori was another standout: juicy, tender, very well marinated and grilled just right. I also loved the cucumber salad, which was light, refreshing, and the perfect balance to the yakitori. The atmosphere added so much to the meal. The décor is adorably authentic, giving off the cozy feel of a true Japanese mom-and-pop restaurant. It's warm, inviting, and full of character. And the service was very warm and very quick. If you are in the area, you definitely want to try Yoshima!! Its such a delightful place with delicious food and a genuine vibe -- definitely worth a visit and revisit again.

This place was recommended to us by a customer at a different sushi place. He said this is the best sushi place by far and we decided to drive almost an hour to try it out. The interior was very simple and basic, sushi and rolls were super plain and nothing fancy. Would I ever go back? No Service was ok, not the best

I've been coming here for over 15 years and haven't lived in the area for awhile. So, I don't visit as much as I use too. Lemme tell you, the menus the same, the food is fresh, consistent and delicious. Always, excellent service and the bartender Hideo has been here since the beginning. He is a master at his craft. Small hole in the wall. For groups maybe 4 max. It's a nice place, but small. Nothing fancy about it. As I come here for the awesome service amd excellent sushi along w/ a bottle of Asahi and some Saki. I highly recommend and take care of the staff thanks!

If you're not a regular here be prepared to wait and be overlooked. My daughter and I ordered 3 rolls to share and the garlic edamame as an appetizer. We waited about 25 minutes for the first roll to come out followed by the edamame. Please note it was only us 2 plus another couple. About 45 minutes into our dinner we're still waiting for the other rolls and then the crowd starts rolling in. We were forgotten about and it wasn't until 1hr in that I finally had to get up to ask for more water and to order a hand roll to go.

We were familiar with the Chubby Franchise, so we were expecting some good grub. I'm glad to say the verdict is definitely on the positive side! We ordered chicken katsu curry, the wagyu steak rice bowl and the kiddo has his usual curry udon. All our dishes were delicious, although the clear winner was the wagyu steak rice bowl. The steak was thinly sliced and super fatty and had such great mouth-feel and really held the curry well. My kid had a little issue with his curry udon b/c he can't handle the spice level. Service was great. They were extremely patient as it was our first time there and we had a large party. We have a peanut allergy in our party and they made sure that none of the ingredients used for our dishes had any peanuts or cross contamination. At the time of this review, we had been back twice, and this place will definitely be on our rotation of good eats in the WCovina area!

I arrived twenty-five minutes later and observed that the restaurant was clean and well-maintained. There were three groups of people sitting and dining at numerous tables. I advised the female employee that I was there to pick up my order. After confirming my name, the employee said it would be a few more minutes while my orange roll was being made--no problem, I stated. I noticed a white, plastic-sealed bag containing six to seven rolls in plastic containers, sitting on the counter, ready for pickup. I asked the employee if that was my order. She checked the name on the receipt and advised that it was not my order. Ok, no problem, I stated. I waited, and waited, and waited some more. Fifteen to twenty minutes went by, and still, no sushi. The lone female employee was taking phone orders and handed two customers who had also been waiting for their orders. I glanced at the receipt attached to the bag that was resting on the counter, ready for pick up Unless someone else ordered the exact rolls I had ordered (4 CA rolls, one crunch roll, and one orange roll), this WAS my order. I asked the employee to please double-check my order, as I believed this order, which had been sitting on the counter the entire time, was, in fact, mine. The employee confirmed my name and advised, "Oh yes, this is your order. I made a mistake". She handed me my order, and I was gone. I was not upset about having to wait for my order, but I do wish the employee had checked the receipt attached to my bag more clearly the first time around. Oh well, stuff happens. I almost didn't want to leave a review because the service was great but I do kind of have to share…read moremy experience because it was pretty unacceptable. Firstly, I do want to thank the staff here, they were incredibly courteous, polite, professional, kind and communicative with us. This kind of service is rare these days and while my experience was made a lot better because of their empathetic response, I still think the quality of food needs attention. To start, this spot is at a convenient location - right next to Regal theaters, plenty of parking nearby and none of that street parking metered crap. Definitely a plus. Prices are not cheap, rolls run you about $18 and the size was pretty small. We got a protein roll and a dragon roll as the menu indicates you buy one get one half off. Dragon roll was the skinniest, tiniest, most petite roll I've ever seen in my life and just felt like they cheaped out on it, which is kind of crazy since it's basically just a California roll... imitation crab is insanely cheap, it's not even real crab. Anyway... I ordered a Tonkotsu Ramen, plain - only egg & protein and when it was served to us, all I saw was a puddle of grease on top. For those who are unaware, Tonkotsu literally translates to pork bones, so while it is definitely a hearty/fatty broth, it shouldn't have a visibly separated layer of grease on top. You know when you reheat fettuccini alfredo and the oil separates in the microwave? It looked like that. I've tried various tonkotsu ramens - some better than others btw feel free to DM me for suggestions although the locations are not in close range - but none have had that visible grease layer. To be honest, I'm not really one to send things back, although I have picked up on the habit of not accepting crap food lately, so I didn't really mention anything to the waiter regarding the ramen. I slurped my noodles, ate my egg and chashu - both were OK. The chashu was seared and hard to eat, not the usual melt-in-your-mouth deal, and left the bland, greasy broth behind. Sucks because my favorite part of ramen is, of course, the broth. That's really the whole point. Moving on... I noticed my friend stopped eating her protein roll so I was like what's up? She looked at me a little worried and said she thought the salmon was off. I scrunched my face and was like dammit now I have to try this to make sure. Smell was not off, but took a bite of the salmon and that thing was bitter. We told the waiter and he was apologetic and said he'd talk to the kitchen. They said the fish came in yesterday and while I believe them, and could easily blame the heat we've been dealing with recently, we still felt unsafe finishing the food. I appreciate them showing concern for the issue with the food and no reports of food poisoning so far - been like two days now so I'm sure we're fine. Brings me to our total of about $50. Damn. I know sushi and ramen aren't typically cheap items but the quality was nowhere near standard and unfortunately this experience was enough to dissuade me from coming back. I don't want to nitpick, but I just like giving peeps details on certain things so their experience may not come as a surprise, but the general atmosphere of this spot was also a bit... different. They were playing loud music, I recall hearing 500 Miles by the Proclaimers super loud and I was kind of like dang man it feels like I'm right in the heart of Tokyo... /s There are much, much, much better spots for ramen and for sushi, there is literally an actual Japanese restaurant right across the street from Kopan and I'd bet money you'd get way better food for more or less the same price there. Also Burger Bun is in the same plaza, place is also fire, I'll drop that review separately. TL;DR: food bad, expensive, fish off, service good, decent parking, convenient location

Not because I'm a snob, but because somehow the more locations a place has, the more likely it seems that the food starts tasting like it was designed by a committee. Actually, I am a snob. I lied earlier. First, the atmosphere is great. The interior has cozy little booths and tables, with fake cherry blossoms spread across the ceiling, which somehow manages to feel charming rather than cheesy. It's intimate enough for a date night, but comfortable enough to hang out with friends and spend some time over dinner. There's a warmth to the place that makes you want to stick around for another roll... and then another roll... and eventually you are fatter than a tick on a Texas hound dog. The service was also excellent. We had a couple of servers, but Lily really stood out. She was friendly, chatty, and genuinely helpful. Good service is what I expect when I go out to eat, but when I remember someone's name afterward and feel compelled to mention them in a Yelp review, that's a pretty strong indication that they were doing something right. Nice job Lily and thank you. Everything we had was fresh, flavorful, and really well executed. We tried the Lemon Blossom, Salmon and Mango Delight, and Venice Roll, and all three were excellent. We tried some drinks and appetizers too, but I already know you're thinking this review is too wordy. Each had its own thing going on, and everything tasted fresh and super flavorful. For sushi at this price point, I think SushiYa is a terrific value. You get a nice atmosphere, genuinely great service, and food that makes you immediately start thinking about what you're going to order the next time you come back. And apparently I'm already thinking about that. In fact, I may be driving there right now as I write this review. Which, in retrospect, is probably not a great idea. If the police see me, I'm probably getting a ticket. Whoa, I just ran a stop sign. So if you're reading this and there's a noticeable lack of punctuation at the end, just know that the final sentence of this Yelp review was probably written through tears as I look at how much this citation is costing me. Anyway, check out Sushi Ya. Good stuff.

My family and I were first-time visitors to this exclusive AYCE Sushi restaurant…read more After waiting fifteen minutes to be seated, a very friendly, welcoming waitress approached us and apologized for the wait. It was no issue for us whatsoever. Once seated, we were told for the first time that this restaurant was all-you-can-eat only. I explained to the waitress that my daughter only wanted two California rolls. Once again, I was reminded that this was AYCE only. No big deal, but I was a tad disappointed and surprised that we wouldn't be allowed to order À la carte. Up to this point, I haven't asked pricing for the AYCE, as I was prepared for $35.99-$45.99 per person, like most other AYCE sushi restaurants. At this restaurant, you order using your cell phone after scanning the QR code on a paper taped to each table. I scanned the QR code, and the full menu, including pictures, was displayed. I prefer ordering from any business by speaking to a live person; however, I have accepted that more and more businesses are switching to this option and/or kiosks for placing orders. We ordered five to six rolls in total and a few other items from the full menu on display. The wait time was approximately 33 minutes for our order to be delivered to our table. This was acceptable and understandable, as this is a large and extremely popular restaurant, as shown by how many guests were seated at nearly every one of the twenty+ tables and the steady stream of customers checking in and waiting for a table. As our food arrived, it looked appealing, and all the rolls we ordered were placed on one wooden tray. Our rolls were absolutely DELICIOUS!! Fresh and perfectly prepared. I truly could not believe how tasty each roll was, as each piece I had was full of flavor We made it to round two of three before we had to call it quits because we were stuffed and extremely happy with our lunch. When it came time to pay, I was extremely happy and surprised to learn that our AYCE sushi was only $29.99 per person, which is an unbelievable price. I might add that service here was AMAZING!! Between our waitress and a waiter who was also helping, they checked on us nine times. They were both attentive, super friendly, and hardworking. The restaurant was very clean and well organized, and there were four sushi chefs on two different sides of the restaurant doing their thing. The service was top-notch, and the food was EXCELLENT! We will gladly return here soon.

Honestly great sushi! I would come back if I want to feast on some yummy rolls…read more I have zero complaints. For $38 per person it's a great find! Ambiance was lively and busy, servers were bustling around so it wasn't that hard to catch someone. My favorite roll was the Aloha roll. I wish I was more hungry so I could've enjoyed more! I'll be back soon....
