If you're looking for Thai food in Leiden, Buddha's is the spot. We visited our expat friends who…read morelive there now and all four of us decided to come here on a whim on our last night in town. I wish we'd discovered it sooner! We managed to get a 4-top around 7 PM on a Wednesday night, but I would otherwise make a reservation, which you can easily do on their website. The site has a great English translation as well. Buddha's prices seemed a little steep at first, BUT they offer a 2-course and 3-course option as well as an early bird option if you're dining before 6 PM. The portions are large (by US standards) and easily shareable or you can take the leftovers home. We started out with drinks, and my friends had beers. I had a Buddha's mule, which was similar to a Moscow Mule in the US, and I really enjoyed it. One friend had the pornstar martini and I tasted hers- it was strong and sweet. The Pandan Sour was incredibly strong. I had the Choe Chi Koeng- large shrimp in spicy red curry with coconut milk, pepper, long beans, mushrooms, lemon leaves and basil leaves. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and large, and the broth was rich and spicy. I didn't eat much seafood in The Netherlands, but these shrimp were larger than the other shrimp I saw and large compared to what I'm used to in American Thai restaurants. My husband had the Phad Gee Mauw, which has three kinds of meat. The servers brought a large bowl of rice out for all of us at the table to share, and we also ordered extra as my friends were big fans of the rice. We're big fans of Thai food in the US and eat it often, but we were glad to try it in The Netherlands, and this ended up being one of our favorite meals of the trip. You can request spicy food here, and the food is spicier than the other dishes we had. If you visit Leiden- perhaps for the university or the museums- check out Buddha's! We were certainly impressed.

Excellent Thai food. Owned by a Thai chef who cooks legit Thai food. We had an appetizer combo, red…read moresnapper with sweet chili sauce, sautéed beef, and panang tofu. I was impressed with the fried red snapper. It was huge (even for US standards), fresh, and well prepared. Everything was also fresh and tasty. Their "very spicy" is not that spicy. I guess they have to cater to the Dutch palate - there are hardly any Asians in the city after all. In any case one can always add more chili. We were able to pay with our US chip credit card. One doesn't go to Leiden for Thai food, but you have a craving for good Thai food while in Leiden, this should hit the spot.

This was probably the best Thai meal I've had in any part of the world. My partner and I walked in…read moreand were immediately greeted warmly by the hostess as if we were being welcomed into our new family. The decor was tasteful, service was friendly, and the food was amazing!! The menu only included beverages and a few add-ons; other than that, there's no need to choose what you're eating. Similar to visiting someone's home, you eat whatever they're serving. They started us off with some prawn chips (which have a highly addictive flavor and a fluffy/crunchy texture), then soup, then a selection of four entrees, along with some rice. They choose the four entrees based on what fresh ingredients they have on hand that day. (If you have dietary restrictions, tell them when you arrive, they can adjust the meal accordingly.) The portions of the 4 entree sampler were quite large, I'd estimate you get 4-5 bites of each. I was approaching full after eating two of the four, but I couldn't stop eating because it was so tasty! Our four dishes were a spicy green curry with chicken, a beef stir fry, stir fried vegetables, and some deep fried white fish with sweet chili sauce. It was all spiced well and cooked to perfection, none of the meat was too dry/chewy nor were the vegetables mushy. We finished off the meal with a bowl of diced fresh mango. What a wonderful, simple treat. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in Delft!
