It doesn't look great from the outside, but inside is a nice established. They really seem to care here and are prompt to run over if they see that you are looking to leave or order more. Didn't go here for sushi, went here for hibachi. It was a nice change of pace to get a hibachi meal without sitting through the typical hibachi show that is normal at these restaurants. The food was very good. We ordered the Chicken and Shrimp Hibachi and the Steak and Chicken Hibachi. Both started with a bowl of flavorful onion soup, followed by a small salad with a healthy amount of ginger dressing. Dressing was a bit different than I've had before, but still very good. And then the entree, it was a MOUND of food. We both ordered the stir fried rice, which sadly was barely touched as there was so much food. There were teriyaki noodles, with a hot, flavorful mound of carrots, broccoli, onions and zucchini along with our main course of chicken/steak/shrimp. Everything was hot, flavorful and fresh. Great service and good sushi. They may be the only sushi game in town, but it's good. We were visiting local universities and sushi nearby is a prerequisite, apparently! We we're thrown off because it looked dead when we showed up between lunch and dinner. Staff must park in the back. It was open and they were very gracious. read more

If I were reviewing a sushi place in an urban area, I'd likely give this place just 4 stars. But fresh sushi in Menomonie, Wisconsin? They deserve that extra star for bringing great food, fresh seafood, nice atmosphere, and more international variety and culture to this small Wisconsin town. Furthermore, they've done a great job with the interior of the place, and the actual sushi bar is well placed and designed as well. The food is good. The menu is HUGE. We started with the edamame, which was nicely salted. I didn't get a chance to try any of the house specialty rolls, but the sashimi and sushi was fresh and well presented. The rolls were also delicious - we had a few common ones as part of the sushi for two boat (California, Philly, and Dragon). The miso soup seemed a but unflavorful, but overall that and the salad werr just finet. The price was typical of most nice sushi places, but could potentially scare off any locals who aren't used to paying this much for dinner. As long as you realize it is a nicer, more upscale place (maybe meant for those special occasions) you won't be disappointed. Remember, you're paying for the art of well crafted sushi and freshly flown in fish, so it will naturally be a bit steeper in price than the burger down the street! I hope this place thrives, and becomes a Menomonie staple. If only it were downtown, but then I remember that often the best sushi joints in Los Angeles are found in strip malls, so hopefully Yamato will follow suit in this department! read more

This place is everything we've been waiting for in this town! The service was amazing from the very beginning. We were welcomed and lead to our table by an extremely pleasant and friendly waitress. Their menu is as long as my grandma's stories and as diverse as the US itself. And trust me, I've been to many good sushi houses, but this one takes the cake. Literally. It takes all the most delicious food you've ever tried and makes it healthy. Roll with seafood AND steak? Check! Veggie roll and edamame? Check! Chinese soda? Check! Now, this place is on the pricier side (we paid around $70-80 for two with the tip), but I'd rather spend more and go out a bit less, than eat at China Buffet and never know the true quality of Asian cuisine. Oh and have I mentioned the atmosphere? Both the interior and the music makes you shed the stress and fill up on some of that relaxed ambiance you've been craving after that shitty customer at work. Yamato has become a favorite place for a nice meal away from home. I like the dinner box as it comes with a variety of items that I might not otherwise try or not know how to order. I've been here twice now (once to dine in and once to take out) and both experiences have been top notch. Dine-in: Very friendly staff, quick service and a very pleasing atmosphere. The music they have playing is very soothing and relaxing. I had the Monkey Roll and my husband had the Sakura Roll and both were excellent. Take-out: 10-15 minutes from phone call to walking out the door with my order. I ordered the Yamoto Roll this time and it was even better than the Monkey Roll I had last week. I also picked up the California Roll and it's very, very good. If I could come here every day, I would. Top notch, so glad to have a place like this in Menomonie. read more

I was really surprised to find this place in Menomonie. The dining scene there tends toward burgers, steaks, fish fries and sandwiches. There are a couple of places that offer more eclectic offerings but Yamato really stands out and it's such a surpise to find it in a strip mall. The decor is pleasant and welcoming, the staff is attentive and the food is excellent. We've had their sushi, tempura and teriyaki a couple of times now and have been very pleased with the meals. Our son who's a big fan of sushi was pleasantly surprised too. The food was fresh, well presented and the staff was friendly and helpful with selections. I really really hope they make it because it's a wonderful addition to a rather standard small town dining scene. read more
