Stopped by here after reading their reviews! Its pretty popular and highly recommended so I had to try. I ordered their spicy tofu roll, yam roll, and veggie gyoza. The tofu was cold, and thick pieces. The spicy sauce was not spicy. And the most disappointing part was the rice was overcooked. The roll fell apart and was pretty soggy/mushy. Yam roll was delicious but again, overcooked rice. Veggie gyoza was ok but stale/dry. I thought maybe it sat for took long but it wasn't ready when picked up so I'm not sure. Not sure if it was a bad night but I would not recommend. read more

incredibly disappointing .... A simple / easy order... salmon roll / tuna roll.... sashimi. The roll(s) were almost ALL rice. There is so little fish it's pointless to order. Also, maybe it's my nose but the tuna had a smell to it that was off putting. The sashimi was cut in chunks (small / larger / thin / thick).... presentation was atrocious. And... paid for miso.... no miso not a deal breaker but given everything else... if you want good , or at a minimum, decent sushi, stay away from Yama. Go elsewhere or save your money. read more

found ourselves during lunch time in north van after a soccer game, felt the cravings japanese bentos , quick search and found this place less than a km from where we were. they have lunch specials on bento boxes for beef and chicken teriyaki only and No substitutions. each box is $7.95. browsing the menu, their appys and rolls looked really reasonably priced. so we ordered both beef and chicken and a chicken karaage. both bentos cane appealing and included miso soup. both were tasty and weren't too salty. each came with 4 cali rolls and 1 prawn tempura and 1 yam and 1 sweet potato tempura. meats were tender and teriyaki sauce was spot on. the tempuras were just fried so came hot, fresh, and crispy! the only needs improvement aspects are the portions! the rice and teriyaki portions were small compared to most boxes. and, the tempura sauce was weak. it was a bit watered down for sure. chicken karaaga was perfect! not too much breading. seasoned well! chicken was not dry but moist and juicy! came with thousand island dressing! lol sitting capacity was small, as i think they concentrate on take outs....parking will be a problem during peak hours as they are located in a small strip mall and share parking with a music studio and hair salon. but service was great! servers always smiling, and refilled tea and water glasses without being told. food came quick and used dishes taken away asap. for a no frills quick japanese craving, i would recommend this place when in north van! i wouldnt mind going back and trying the rice bowl dishes next time. tip: it may appear they have no washrooms, but just ask and u will be given directions. u gotta go thru the kitchen ( literally) to get to it. very odd placement for sure. lol happy eating! read more

I was desperate for sushi one afternoon so I decided to try out Yama Sushi. The beef teriyaki here is incredible, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone! Also, The tempura was crispy and the sauce was very flavourful. The only reason I didn't give Yama Sushi 5 stars is because I wasn't a big fan of how thickly sliced their sashimi was. super quick service I love how the waiters are so nice! when you sit in the bar seating you can see the chefs cook the sushi! Its so COOL! I would definitely recommend this place to a friend. I love this restaurant with all of my heart. The staff are all extremely friendly, and they clearly enjoy what they do. I eat there very often and they never disappoint. The food is always delicious, I highly recommend trying their yam roll. It is also super affordable and they have so many options on their menu. Keep up the good work guys! read more

Man I love this place! It really seems to be a local gem - noone outside of Lynn Valley seems to know of it, but everyone nearby loves it! It's always full - although keep in mind it is quite small - and whenever you're sitting there eating, there's a constant flow of people picking up take out orders. Although it's not the best sushi in Vancouver, it is really good, very fresh, and a great value (where else can you get good salmon nigiri for .99 a piece these days?). Also, the staff are really friendly and always recognize those of us who frequent the place on a regular basis. One major downside is that parking can be a real pain - the restaurant shares a very small parking lot with a couple of other businesses and a Greek restaurant, so during dinner hour, the parking's always full. Thankfully, there's a Save-On across the street with a big lot. A tip - try the paradise roll - it's a California roll with mango, smoked salmon, and Japanese mayo on top - really good!! read more

Yama is my number one spot for Sushi in Vancouver! I have been to dozens of places and none compare to the value and quality of food you get here. The Chef special rolls are all wonderful. Regular rolls are around 20% larger than what you would find at other Sushi places. The staff here are wonderful and really make you feel like a special customer. The place doesn't have a ton of seating and does a high volume of take out, so peak weekend times should be avoided if you want to expierience this place for the first time. read more

Mmmhmmm, my new fave lunch sushi place. I've been here twice now, and it is superb. Thanks to my usual being closed on Mondays I ended up here a few weeks ago. The salmon is all wild, so I don't have to shun the salmon rolls, meaning I can eat way more combos! I had the spicy combo for lunch today, and it was huge, and wonderful. I'm not normally a fan of mayo, but there was some sort of spicy sauce on top that looked like mayo, but tasted good. Not overly mayo-y. The gomae is good, and came in a big portion. Not my favourite gomae ever, but still quite nice. Another time I had a bento box. Now those are a good deal. Try one. The food was excellent, and the value is killer, especially at lunch. I was stuffed when I left. The space is teeny tiny, but oh-so-cute. Nice staff, and a really pleasant atmosphere. Geoff is right about the tea, though. A little bland. Definitely a good choice in Marpole if you are looking for sushi. read more

Ordered take out...told there's no tamago. Ok. Placed my order. 15 min later get a call that they ordered Tako but it hadn't arrived yet. Ok, cancel that. Are you not a sushi place? Should you not have everything adequately stocked, not just as you need it? Ordered: 1) Combo A: 1PC Tuna, 1PC salmon, 1PC Snapper, 1PC Ebi & Dynamite Roll $7.50 **although not listed comes with miso soup **um we didn't get Dynamite roll, we got California roll (which no one likes, but too late to change when we've already left) 2) 3 negitoro rolls - was only ok, didn't really taste the green onions, almost just tasted like a tuno/toro roll really. Not worth $3/roll we paid! 3) Toro Sashimi(6pcs) $8.95 - not bad Total came to $26, which was a bit expensive in my opinion as our usual Nanaimo Sushi or Sushi town would have filled us up for this price. Yami has been around for some time, but within the past few months it has come under new management. I never tried it under the old owners, so I thought now would be the time to give it a shot. I walked in from the cold for an early dinner to a fairly spartan and clean room, devoid of other patrons. The attentive hostess had me seated immediately and some hot (but sort of bland) tea on my table within seconds. Next time, I'm bringing my stop watch. Prices were pretty decent so I ordered my usual sushi feast. The tuna roll was as good as any I've had, succulent and buttery. The salmon nigiri was a generous slab over a (not too sticky) ball of rice. My dragon roll was a bit of a surprise because I didn't read the menu very carefully; I was expecting basically an inside out kappa roll with avocado and eel on top (and hopefully some tempura prawns inside with the cucumber, but I understand that not every place does this), dressed with some mayo. What I got was a California roll with eel on top drenched with mayo and sprinkled with roe. It was pretty good, but not as good as what I would consider the standard dragon roll, which looking at the takeout menu is listed as a white dragon roll. People who aren't a fan of mayo should avoid it entirely. Red Tuna, one black south still has my heart out of the Granville strip sushi bars, but Yami's tuna roll at least made me pause and reconsider. read more

One of the best sushi places I have ever been to. We stopped here right before going over to Lynn Canyon. We were a group of 20 and to our benefit, everyone had a seat in this tiny hidden gem. Their sushi is light and fresh and their sashimi melts in your mouth. Not to mention their service was incredible. The lady constantly kept making sure our experience was great. I have yet to find a place with as fresh sushi as this one. Their prices are also really cheap compared to the higher end places, you do receive the most bang for your buck here. read more

Hidden jam! Came upon this place by chance after a hike at Lynn Canyon Park. It's a tiny little restaurant only with a few tables. We arrived 15 min before opening, so we parked right in front and watched the sushi chef prepare for the day (not in a creepy stalker kind of way). He was working alone and we noticed an aura of master chef. Maybe that's bit of an exaggeration. Anyways, as we walked in, we even liked the music. Jazz. Now to the good part, the food. I've eaten a LOT of sushi around Vancouver. These guys do a good job for quick inexpensive sushi, and I especially like their party trays that have a good variety of deliciousness. Sushi was very fresh. It didn't taste like it had been sitting around for a couple hours before I got it. Very convenient to where I live, and I don't know how I missed them for so many years. It seemed like it could be good, and we were attracted by this small restaurant which was nearly full. This Yama Sushi place could get a better rating if we hadn't already been to the best in North Van (which I won't name in this review, but you can find that sushi restaurant, on Lonsdale, with a Google search for: "best sushi in Londale North Vancouver". Everybody in the Lonsdale area goes there, because it is 2/3 to 1/2 the price of most sushi places, and its food is consistently excellent, and fast.) Back to Yama Sushi: We ordered a combination and a bento box. After we left, the after-taste from Yama Sushi was unpleasant. Other review comments - - No pickle, or wasabi with the bento box. - The wasabi portion was much smaller than at other restaurants, and light-green, little taste, not what we think is real wasabi should be. - No empy side dish for to mix the wasabi and soy sauce -- a standard in all other sushi restaurants. - Service was slow, because they were understaffed for the number of customers and take out orders -- it's obvious that they needed more help. - Price was high for the qualify. The bento box didn't come with sushi at all, but was $1.30 extra. (Never seen a bento box without sushi before.) - The tempura and the "famous sushi" in the combination were fried with too-low temperature oil, which saturated the food with something that gave off a bad aftertaste in the mouth, to us. - The miso soup and tempura sauce were very mediocre -- watery, blah. - To go to the washroom, you have to walk through the kitchen and its greasy floor! I love the sushi here! The rolls are large, with a lot of seafood and fresh ingredients inside, all at reasonable prices. I usually do takeout, but I went there one time to dine in and the presentation was really nice. I love their special rolls there including the dragon roll, the rainbow roll, and their spicy scallop roll is always good too. I eat at a lot of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, and this one is one of the tastiest and best priced. read more

I had the Dragon roll and gyoza, and my daughter had the Rainbow roll and takoyaki. The food arrived quickly and presentation of the rolls looked pretty. It was pretty good. What. Just. Happened. We're from California and we came here for sightseeing. We were forced to pay more because we had USD instead of CAD. I had to pay 42.26$ but I calculated it in my phone and I'm only suppose to pay 32.88$... the food is so-so. And it was cheap but there is no reason to f*ck us over with the CAD and USD exchange. Would definitely go back. Service and food was very good and meals arrived quickly. Our guess is it's family run. My friend had a bento box which she rated 8-8.5 and I had ebi and an avacado roll, which were very good and the prices were amazing. Two dinners with lots of food for less than $20! Wow. Well, it's that much easier to leave them a generous tip as they deserve it. Better to pay it forward than make them have to raise their prices. While there, a number of take out orders by locals. Parking could get tight but there's parking lots all around so it's all good. Nothing fancy, a little whole in the wall really (seats about 14 total), but a great neighborhood eatery and nice people. Sushi here is decent. Usually stop by if I just want a small sushi combo and nothing else. If i'm in the mood for more of a sushi type meal prefer the Mr.Sushi location in the next building over. The seating is fairly limited and the deep fried stuff always seems to be a little too deep fried for my liking. The raw fish quality is also not top notch. read more

A friend told me it was really good . After eating here I thought. "she doesn't like sushi? " So...Went with my daughter who I sometimes think was born without taste buds "its good" to everything that isn't spicy . She ordered a box with chicken cali roll, tempura , you know. The "uneventful box" I ordered some tempura, spicy salmon ,sunomono miso. It was all very uneventful. I think it draws its customers from Argyle school mostly. God love them but teenagers are more like goats than gastronomes and that's what you get here but at Lynn Valley prices. If you want cheap filling teenager style sushi for goats try Haru on Lonsdale. Its just as good but quite a bit cheaper! read more

We stopped by here on our way back from a hike. It's a cute little place tucked away just off Mountain Hwy. We ordered a couple of bento boxes and a dragon roll. The bento boxes were a little small, but still a good value. The chicken and beef teriyaki was pretty good and I actually thought the tempura was nice and light. The dragon roll had good flavour but the rice was a little too mushy for our liking. But value-wise, this place is good. Lunch came to just over $20 which is not bad at all. Decent run of the mill sushi place in Lynn Valley but with cheaper prices than other comparable places. The restaurant is quite small so it can get packed during dinner time and they get quite busy with take-out orders. Despite this, servers are nice and attentitive. We have a favourite sushi place at Hamai Sushi in the Westview Plaza, but Yama Sushi is quite a good alternative for staying closer to home. We were sure to order real crab and wild salmon for a few extra dollars, and everything came very well presented and tasted fresh. I also never tried this place prior to the managment change. But their takeout brochure attracted us so we went down and try it out during a canucks night. I had tuna, dynamite and chopped scallops rolls and they were all very good. The presentation and the seafood are all awesome. But since they are still new, I am only giving 4 stars right now, if my next few visits still live up to what I had in my first visit, I would detintely give a 5 stars. read more
