Another plus was the timelines and neatness of Mike's work. He started when he said he would and worked everyday until 4, except the weekend, until the job was done. He was careful to cover the floors and clean up after each day. I am not an expert when it comes to bathroom renovations but I do have some construction knowledge and it appears that Mike Kraemer is a skilled contractor with a broad knowledge base who does not cut corners.

James Whelan of Clare Home Improvement is a true godsend…read more As a first time homeowner, I called about a dozen or so local and nearby contractors for an estimate to jack up the front porch and replace the footings. It became one big headache after another. Contractors were either charging an arm and a leg or alternatively wouldn't take on the "difficult" job. Most made me feel like they were taking advantage with the price. I called James Whelan one afternoon and he was able to meet at my house that evening even though it was a 45 minute drive from where he lives. He was friendly, knowledgeable and able to communicate the scope of the job in a way that wasn't condescending or curt. Although he humorously described the toughness of the job as "not HGTV," he put me at ease with his personality and openness. Although a family emergency postponed the start date, once the work began - it barely took him and his crew a week to complete. He is such a hard worker. Even the neighbors were impressed! At our first meeting, I had a gut feeling about Mr. Whelan and immediately trusted his craftsmanship and years of experience. You need to watch his workers so they dont cut corners that are expensive later to fix. You need to get the agreement in writing, otherwise promised work will be forgotten and you will have no recourse a year later when the cut corners finally reveal themselves. No matter how much they come with a sob story, stick to half on deposit and not another cent until the project is complete and a punch list is done. This is a business transaction and his employees financial woes are not your problem. I should have trusted my gut when the siding guy was working alone and using nails, now Im having someone come by to quote how much its going to cost to tear down everything and redo it. Appears they have the skill to do great small interior projects, but cant manage employees to do anything larger. But the one big thing, get a written contract or plan on paying someone else to fix problems later.

This speaks to me because clearly someone isn't listening or paying attention. Ricardo was very well aware that I was getting other quotes for gutter repair or a new system and a shed roof. I misread the quote as I expected multiple as I have a few requests and that's how other companies did them, Ricardo told me where to find the information. All good. A few weeks have passed and I am finalizing on a gutter project with a contractor that was legitimately $5k lower. I was going to use Duramax for a different project they quoted though. Ricardo decided to call up very "hey, hey, hey". When I told him I found a contractor to do the gutters cheaper, but I wanted to use them for a shed roof. Ricardo had to educate me on why I made the wrong decision and why his price is high. First, I didn't make a wrong decision and second, get your facts together before you start quoting your superior quality when the other contractor is equal to your quality. We are done at this point. They don't even get the roof project. I see Ricardo responded very professionally. However, he missed a key concept. The other contractor offered the same product, same quality AND better warranty/guarantee. So no, this was not about a budget. This was about companies that all came in $2/5k lower for similar product, material and warranty. However, if he listened rather than take it as an insult, I would have left well enough alone and gave him the shed project. Instead, he had to over talk me the second I mentioned someone was cheaper by A LOT. His veiled and direct response makes me think this happened often.

Calls go unanswered regularly. In my honest opinion, this company lacks the skill set, the knowledge and the business ethics that are required to operate a "Home Building" company!
