James Whelan of Clare Home Improvement is a true godsend…read more As a first time homeowner, I called about a dozen or so local and nearby contractors for an estimate to jack up the front porch and replace the footings. It became one big headache after another. Contractors were either charging an arm and a leg or alternatively wouldn't take on the "difficult" job. Most made me feel like they were taking advantage with the price. I called James Whelan one afternoon and he was able to meet at my house that evening even though it was a 45 minute drive from where he lives. He was friendly, knowledgeable and able to communicate the scope of the job in a way that wasn't condescending or curt. Although he humorously described the toughness of the job as "not HGTV," he put me at ease with his personality and openness. Although a family emergency postponed the start date, once the work began - it barely took him and his crew a week to complete. He is such a hard worker. Even the neighbors were impressed! At our first meeting, I had a gut feeling about Mr. Whelan and immediately trusted his craftsmanship and years of experience. I really look forward to using James and only him on more upcoming projects.

You need to watch his workers so they dont cut corners that are expensive later to fix. You need to get the agreement in writing, otherwise promised work will be forgotten and you will have no recourse a year later when the cut corners finally reveal themselves. No matter how much they come with a sob story, stick to half on deposit and not another cent until the project is complete and a punch list is done. This is a business transaction and his employees financial woes are not your problem. I should have trusted my gut when the siding guy was working alone and using nails, now Im having someone come by to quote how much its going to cost to tear down everything and redo it. Appears they have the skill to do great small interior projects, but cant manage employees to do anything larger. But the one big thing, get a written contract or plan on paying someone else to fix problems later.

On the first day of the job, Pete and his crew arrived at our property very early in the morning before my wife and I were awake and proceeded to move everything that was in proximity to the house out into the yard to give a berth for falling debris. The issue was we had expressed wanting to do this ourselves and many of the plants that were moved were damaged by being left out in the direct summer sun. I spoke to Pete to confirm that our garden would be protected and in no danger of being damaged by debris, and he said they would take the necessary measures to ensure it would be. No more than 5 minutes later, shingles were being launched off the roof directly into the garden, smashing and lacerating everything in their path. At the end of the job, there were many nails around the property as one would expect. The magnet did not do a sufficient job of picking them up, and my wife and I picked up several hundred by hand even after Pete and his team had returned to do two more sweeps with the magnet. A nail in the driveway also punctured the tire on my truck. After the job was "finished," we discovered that our bay windows wouldn't open because the trim had been placed too low and blocked their clearance, so the team had to come out again to fix this. The dumpster also left sizeable gauges in our lawn, which they backfilled with inexpensive, gravely dirt. All in all, we felt All Type did not exhibit the minimal care and respect for our property that we would expect and were more concerned with getting the job done quickly and moving on to the next. The finished product itself looks nice, so I felt two stars more appropriate than one.

I had a horrific experience start to finish Including men sitting on my roof drinking beer. Well, now I had a plumber try to find the source of a leak and it appears that my roof is leaking I don't know if this company is still in business, but it's no longer owned by Bruce Peters, so steer clear. Not sure what recourse I have.
