Xtremely heartless company. They keep their beautiful creatures in tiny thick Tupperware not able to move with barely enough air. The store smells horrific like old milk and baby diapers. The staff prefer that their animals die as food and live a miserable life, then be rescued and taken into a home, even if that only means living for a short while. I can't believe that these people are able to keep their doors open. Do not come here if you are an animal lover of any sort.. or someone who likes to smell in through their nose. read more

Best reptile vendor in Jacksonville, Florida. My husband and I decided to go to Xtreme Exotics because my son is obsessed with snakes along with my husband. We went here to learn more about the different type of snakes as well as what we'd need to purchase a new snake owners. All the associates here were extremely knowledgeable and very kind. They answered all our questions and explained the commitment that goes into owning a snake and any other reptile they had in their shop. I discovered Xtreme Exotics about a year ago. They are the only place I was able to find in Jacksonville that sells regal jumping spiders. When I called last year to ask whether they had any in stock, Sarong went above and beyond in sharing information about proper care for jumpers. Since then, I've purchased 3 adorable spiders from them, and several feeders when supply chain issues made it hard to get food from my local pet store. This week, I called to see if they had any albino African clawed frogs, and not only did they have a pair that really needed to be rehomed, but they also cut me a nice deal on them. This shop is always great about giving you a fair price, and even so it's worth it to me to pay a little more than you would at a chain in order to support a local business that clearly takes good care of its animals. I've always had positive, helpful interactions with the employees and owner, and it's one of my favorite shops to visit if only to get to see the massive variety of reptiles, arachnids, and more! read more

I've been a pretty loyal customer here for the last year since I moved out here. I go every two weeks to get food did my reptiles and any stuff that they need! But recently I had followed the shop account to see when they get new reptiles in etc I also post lots of pics of their reptiles in hopes of getting them new homes! I realized after a day I was blocked. Don't know who runs the account and felt the need to do that but it was very unprofessional. Also the woman that works there is always off putting and rude. The store is one of the most amazing I've ever stepped foot in, and the staff is top notched, but do yourself a favor and look into the nonprofit wildlife foundation that they run off site. That's more what my review will be about... I have been to all of the major zoos in California, Audubon in New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, Jackson, and Miami (those are the ones I can think of off of the top of my head)... Out of all of these places, I swear on everything that this place usurps them all. When it comes to acreage, no, you're not going to spend an entire day walking around aimlessly with the hopes of seeing a rhino, but when it comes to the kindness of the staff, the facility, the animals, and the care that they are given it's like nothing I have ever seen. What's even more baffling is that this place is a non profit. You won't find people aimlessly walking around aimlessly, and appointments must be made in advance, but each tour is private. Animals are actually sent here from other zoos for special care, and to me that speaks volumes. I feel like everybody has a cause of some sort, and if the care of animals happens to be one of yours, this is a place where I can assure you anything you could do would go to good use. This is a place that is actually permitted to breed and house species that are almost gone in the wild, and the curator of every zoo needs to take a visit and bring their notepad. The habitats were practically clean enough to eat out of. And on a side note, kudos to Jamie for leading our tour. She seemed like a walking encyclopedia when it came to what was there and what was happening in the world regarding each of the species. My hat is in my hands for these guys. read more

Here is my honest review, as someone who has done extensive research on many reptiles. I am going to start out with my biggest gripe: the care that they recommend is subpar. Its below what they should be recommending, and I am honestly disappointed. For example, they often say that red lights are acceptable to use as a night light for your reptile, despite extensive evidence as to the contrary. Also, they do not appear to have much issue with getting wild caught reptiles when captive born are available, which is an issue for species that you really should only by captive born if you wish to be ethical. One last minor issue, the feeders I buy from them are lower quality than online retailers, but it is only a minor gripe for me. Now, for the good parts. They have a nice collection of reptile supplies, and do a decent job at bringing new people into the hobby. Personally, I buy my UVB and heat lamps from them. Overall, they are miles ahead of Petsmart and Petco, though that isn't saying much. They have room to improve, and if they start giving out good advice, they will defintely be at least a 4 star. read more

It's really the only place in town now They just bought all the dry goods from a local store that went under, so lots of used items, save some $ there. If you're in town you know who they cleaned out. Although it's all priced as new. Due to their location, they certainly will drop what they are doing to help what "looks" to be an affluent client, particularly when it includes a build out. This can be off setting as 1. I'm a millionaire and drive a beat up truck, have sleeve tattoos and only wear beat up t-shirts, so you never know who you're talking to. 2. These "spend $1,000 in a single visit" folks who only come in once even twice a year don't pay the bills. It's the customers who spend $50-100 a week every, week who pay their bills. The owner is a ok guy it seems, from what I've observed he really needs a business manager. His employees hang out doing nothing, while he's elbows and a$$holes. He should be wheeling and dealing and the employees do the work, like filling water dishes, feeding, cleaning but it's often the other way around from what I've seen. Perplexing...? It's sort of inmates running the asylum. Dry good prices are completive, animals are waay overpriced. Again this is due to location. Wild things in Middleburg different cliental, much lower prices on animals. Same in Lake City. He's literally a stones throw from SJC. Honestly, these days ordering online is probably the best thing to do for animals. Smaller businesses like this do just that, then add 25% and sell to you. In order for a business to have really good prices they need to have a HUGE breeeding program, that's just not their MO here. They are more of a traveling zoo with a shop. Word in the community is the owner is wanting to make his house essentially an exoctic animal zoo and most profits from the store go to that. Be smart, drive just a few hours south and visit some of the best breeders in the world, save yourself the mark up. They give tours too. Come back if his prices better, but they make a killing off impulse buy and again, nowhere else to go in Jacksonville. Don't get me wrong, All in all not a bad place, but again literally the only reptile/exoctic store in all of Duval county. They are huge into Bengal cats (breeding and sales) and aren't really dog friendly from what I've heard. They but up a lot of collections and house snakes together. Why do I bring this up? That is a recipe for spreading illnesses. So watch out for things like mites, respiratory infections etc. Do some research, be a good consumer and demand good customer service. I love this place, we make a 3 hour drive from out of state just so I can get feeders here. Staff, while usually very busy is knowledgeable and helpful, if I'm browsing with my husband it's usually on a weekend when there's an impressive amount of people in the store and least 2 or more staff goes out of their way to acknowledge you and ask if you need help. Selection for animals is kickass, was in this past Saturday and they had an adult female Madagascar Hognose for sale that I left with, perfect body weight, nice and healthy animal that's acclimating wonderfully. Store is way bigger than it looks from the outside and while it's mildly crowded they stock tons of products that many places don't bother with, tons of variety. I overheard an employee taking the time to explain husbandry of a bearded dragon to a family and their very excited daughter & making sure to answer all of their questions from lighting to dietary needs with patience and concern for both customer and animal, they aren't here to just make a sale. And for how big of a store they're running it's clean, glass an cages are kept nicely and they have some very elaborate set ups on display as well, store doesn't stink either. Their feeder selection is great they always have what I need from jumbo rats to fuzzy mice to various insects, I can get everything I need and then some in one trip. I made the mistake of wandering into "House of Reptiles" that's a tad bit closer, smell smacks you in the face, the guy is rude and doesn't seem to understand what UVB lighting or general proper husbandry is, made me appreciate this place even more. Without a doubt the worst place to buy a pet. Male salesman was helpful at least. However the woman who was either the manager, the owner or the village idiot ruined my daughters day. We drove 20 miles to the store, spent the time to learn about the turtles tortoises and what they needed. The male sales person helped my daughter choose the "perfect" turtle, making my daughter so very happy and excited. This however made the entire ordeal worse. The woman what ever her title was, had a problem that my parents (I'm 46 years old) had a water turtle for the last 15 years and still alive in a 40 gallon tank. We were buying the starter kit and everything they said this animal needed according to them. Even after agreeing to a larger pond when it grew to need it the woman would then not sell us the turtle. Making my daughter cry the whole way home. I doubt the woman was the owner as a store owner would wish to sell what the store sells. Extra special was her saying she kept her turtles (plural) in a 40 gallon tank... same size as my parents (still not mine and still had agreed to upsize as the turtle needed). I asked if she was going to make the sale or did I need to just say thank you. The woman said thank you and dismissed us. We bought a a tortoise at another pet store later and we and the tortoise are happy. I hope the owner seeing that their employee so casually denies sales or profit and deals with the problem sternly. read more

Cages were way too small for some of those animals and put so many babies into 1 tiny cage. And the ferrets and the hamster were in such tiny cages that were just awful. The tortoises were too small of cages too. And a leopard gecko was very skinny and just looked awful. Overall, it just doesn't seem like the animals are being properly taken care of. read more

My son and I looked at quite a few pet stores in Jacksonville and we both felt the reptiles here were more cared for and the employees took such pride in their animals/reptiles.
