His parents, John and Maria Cicero, founded the Original John's Deli in Brooklyn's Gravesend neighborhood in 1968. The Cicero Family created what has become known as the "best hero in Brooklyn!" Although location on the corner of 86th Street and Stillwell Avenue still stands, it is no longer owned by the Cicero Family. The family does own and operate two newer locations, dubbed "John's Deli Hero King" in Brooklyn's Dyker Heights neighborhood as well as Staten Island. After many years of working in the delis, the Cicero's son Robert began taking up the art of crafting exceptional pizza. When a location opened up down the street from John's Deli's Dyker Heights location, Robert seized the opportunity to turn it into his own artisanal pizzeria. I recently visited Dyker Pizza Company for lunch while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn breweries and pizzerias and this was my first stop of the day. I arrived just as they opened for the day. I told the employee that I'm from New Haven and asked if they pronounced 'apizza' the same way that we do in the Elm City: [ah-BEETS]. He confirmed that they did. It seems that from the late 19th century until around the 1950s or so, most Italian-Americans referred to pizza as "apizza" whether it was New Haven-style pizza or not. The employee explained to me that the pizza at Dyker Pizza Company is a hybrid between New Haven-style and the artisanal sourdough style that is becoming more common in NYC. Customers can order by-the-slice or whole pies. I was pretty hungry, and after looking over the menu I decided to order the "Pesto and Prosciutto" (ricotta cream, shredded mozzarella, basil pesto, prosciutto). The cheese was creamy, the pesto tasted fresh, and the crust had equal parts char and chew. This was really good pizza and I must give Dyker Pizza Company my seal of approval!

This was one of the best pizzas I've ever had anywhere and I've been to many that fall on those top pizza lists and this was better!!!!! I was expecting a regular Brooklyn slice (which is usually great at any Brooklyn pizzeria) but this blew me away. We ordered a mushroom pie. Made with sourdough, the crust was light and airy with just the right amount of charring. The mushrooms were fresh. Just pizza perfection. The Sicillian salad was perfect with olives and walnuts. Topped off with decaf cappuccino and a Tortoni. I can't wait to go back

I don't think I've ever referred to that as anything outside of "Square" but I digress. Now a few months ago I noticed people all walking around the area eating pizza and checking little lists that they were carrying. This was apparently some kind of "Pizza Wars" competition and I was saddened to be missing out. From the looks of it, the participants were getting the meagerest of bites of pizza from those establishments that were part of the competition. With the FOMO now passed I decided that maybe once a week I would pay a visit to a different local place outside of my usual go to pizzeria. It would not only up the amount of foodie pics on the Instagram but also give me the chance to Yelp and perhaps direct others to what we found. A win win scenario for sure. So my dear friend from the region joined me for a quick pizza lunch and I ordered a slice and a square while my friend only had a single regular slice. Diet Coke and Sprite were the drinks and we sat and chatted to catch up while enjoying this quality offering. Now I can say that there were a ton of different varieties of pizza at Mancini's but I just wanted the regular versions for this visit. The place itself is cozy and the staff very friendly and I will most certainly go back but only after I get some of the other places on my personal list checked off. Mancini's is a high recommendation for those who happen to be nearby or those who can order and have one of the delivery people bring them something. It's important to share this little bit of news as while we ate my friend told me that Mancini's had actually won the Pizza Wars but I wasn't sure which version of their pies won the prize. Apologies for that detail being missing but congratulations to Mancini's on their accomplishment.

We started with a house salad and enjoyed delicious ravioli and perfectly crafted plain and margarita slice. We topped it off with scrumptious tiramisu. All in all a lovely meal at Mancini's. Special shout out to the young lady at the counter who was so very attentive, helpful, and sweet. She's one of those people where she's doing a million things but doesn't let it show. She had such a unique grace and kindness and made us feel so taken care of. Thank you so much! We really appreciated you!

A few years back, I wrote a review exalting the values of Lombardo's, highlighting how it is a time capsule of a different Bay Ridge, where pizzerias and Irish immigrants ran amok, and the streets were gritty in flavor and full of desire. Frankie's brings all that to the front entrance and straight to your table. The interior feels very Coppola meets Scorsese, a wild feel of 1970's noir with the tablecloths and wiseguys (and dolls) singing as you are chowing down. Even the servers have that Brooklyn charm that I hold dearly. Like Lombardo's, the pizza is delicious and beautifully arranged that it is hard not to eat a whole pie by yourself. Everything tastes fresh, homemade, and gets better and better with each passing minute. Some restaurants the food deteriorates as soon as the food hits the table, but here, it is just the start of its incredible journey. Actually, that would be as soon as it comes out of the oven, but you get the idea. The service is just splendid of Brooklyn staff that make you feel right at home. They boxed up my leftovers and encouraged me to come back again. I certainly will. If there is one mistake I made, it was ordering two red pies instead having a red and a white to change things up on my palette. For my next visit, I will not repeat this. When Lombardo's closed, I was crestfallen. When I asked the staff before I left if they were Lombardo's, they confirmed my suspicions. Everything is right where they left off when I visited there on that cold, snowy February night, except this time it was a brutally hot August evening when I paid my homage to Frankie's. This time I hope I will not be left out in the cold, hoping this restaurant perseveres for many more winters and summers to come. Thank you Frankie's.

To get a slice, square, and a drink for $8 in today's day and age is rare. And you are not sacrificing quality. Regarding the regular slice, the sauce is fresh and tangy. If you live anywhere near Bay Ridge and you're not eating here, I genuinely don't know what you're doing with your life. The sauce alone deserves its own fan club -- perfectly seasoned with basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper in a ratio so precise it borders on mathematical genius. It's the kind of sauce that tastes like someone's Italian grandmother is still in the back, stirring it with a wooden spoon and judging your life choices. And the crust? A paradox. A miracle. A scientific anomaly. Crisp and light, yet somehow chewy in that "how the hell did they do that" way that only truly elite pizzerias can pull off. It's the crust you compare all other crusts to, and suddenly realize most of them are frauds. The cheese is abundant -- not that sad, stingy sprinkle some places try to pass off as "New York style." No. This is fresh, generous, melty perfection, the kind that stretches when you pull your slice apart like it's auditioning for a mozzarella commercial. Now, yes, they're cash‑only. But let's be honest: All the best pizza places are. It's practically a certification of authenticity. A minor inconvenience, sure, but one that's instantly forgiven the moment that first bite hits your tongue and your soul briefly leaves your body. Five stars. Hands down. If I could give them six, I would. If I could give them a Nobel Prize in Dough Chemistry, I'd sign the nomination myself.
