I ordered the #11 Red Chili Beef Burrito, and honestly, I was really disappointed. For a $25 plate, I expected a burrito with a generous amount of beef, especially when it's advertised as red chili beef. Instead, there was basically a smear of beans and red chili with maybe four tiny pieces of beef--not even actual chunks of meat. My mom ordered the #8 Red Beef Burrito with a chile relleno and cheese enchilada. The chile relleno was literally about the size of a jalapeño, which was incredibly disappointing for the price. Overall, the food was bland, the portions were underwhelming, and everything felt way overpriced for what we received. The only thing we really enjoyed was the chips and salsa. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to make up for the disappointing food and poor value. Definitely a one-and-done experience for us--we won't be going back. read more

Stopped in for a birthday dinner early on a weeknight. There were only a couple of other tables eating. The food overall wasn't bad, I expected some more flavor, but it was decent. The prices are up there a bit. They charge extra for beans and rice with the meals. My only real complaint is how hot it was. I was in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops and was burning up and sweating the whole meal. I gave 1 more star than I would have because the young girl Grace that seated and served us was phenomenal! This is a great little place in Gilbert to curb your cravings for Mexican dishes! I was a plane Jane this time and opted for a combo plate of a cheese enchilada and a shredded beef taco. The red sauce was good but I was expecting a little bit more heat, but that's just my preference. It was a little warm in there but not too terrible. I wish I could give this place a good review. My family has been coming to XJ's almost weekly for about 7 years. The food is fantastic but the service is typically slow. We don't tend to mind because we love it here. However, their timing for take out orders has never been correct, once. Again we don't mind waiting a few minutes, but after multiple times of waiting more than 20 minutes past the quoted time, we tried to give feedback that this isn't a good practice to keep customers. The owner was incredibly rude and disrespectful. When we told him we were loyal customers he said we were not otherwise we wouldn't act this way. I don't think providing feedback to a restaurant after going there over a hundred times is disrespectful. I wish we could continue to patronize this establishment, but I'm not ok with an owner speaking rudely to myself and my elderly mother just for speaking up. read more

Honestly, not the greatest experience. We stopped in for a bite to eat while running some errands, and the food was very subpar. The restaurant was clean and the service was friendly, but the food wasn't good. The Tamale I had tasted microwaved, and the Chips & Salsa were stale. A hidden gem! An inconspicuous Mexican restaurant serving up delicious, flavorful food. It's easily the best Mexican food I've had in Gilbert. We stopped by on a Monday night after having this spot booked marked for months. It's nestled behind a gas station on Val Vista, located within a small-ish shopping center. Lots of parking available! Menu is expansive and filled with all the classics. I went with a #1 combo plate which included a cheese enchilada, a red pork tamale, and a beef taco. Food came out piping hot and was so delicious. Saucy and savory with just the right amount of spice. The enchilada was my favorite. Service was great, our waitress was incredibly kind and attentive. Stopped by for dinner around 6PM. The restaurant became busy after being seated. I was disappointed with service a bit-although we were seated quickly, it took about 20 minutes to receive chips and salsa and to take our order. While waiting I noticed 3 other parties who were served before us. Granted there were only two servers I understood however shouldn't wait that long. The food was okay as well. The crispy taco was a bit greasy-there was oil dripping off at the bottom. The refried rice and beans were probably the only good items. The fried ice cream was great-although I think it's premade. The Frosted Flakes covering was crispy and ice cream inside was cold. Lastly, I placed a to go order and when paying for the bill, it still hadn't been revived. I had to ask for it before paying. Hey! Totally hidden place, when we arrived we sat in the car for a moment wondering if the restaurant had closed down. We approached and pulled the handle to go inside and found it to be very much open, and lively inside. This must be some secret Mexican restaurant hideout or something. And I'm glad we discovered it. My wife had a taco salad, and it was delicious. The size for us was perfect, some times these things can be gargantuan for no reason. I got rolled chicken tacos, they were good. The chips and salsa were fantastic. VERY good salsa, fairly spicy. I loved it. The staff were kind and attentive, and people were coming and going the whole time. This was in walking distance to my Airbnb so I decided to give it a try. I had the special #5 Xavier's way (covered in sauce and cheese.) I also had a flan. I started off with the free chips and salsa. Every place has their own recipe and this one is good. Just the right amount of spice so it's not bland, but not so hot it blows you out. If you order to go no chips, they charge extra. If you sit down you get chips. What's the difference? They also charge you if you don't pay with cash. Don't warn you ahead of time. If they had, I would've paid with cash. But they do not warn you. I would not go back. Generally speaking I stopped in today because I always like a New Mexican restaurant. There's a hole in the wall down the street on Val Vista that has food 10 times better than this and the prices are much better. The food was great as always. My family has come here since it opened, absolutely love this place. The restaurant is super nice and very clean. I would give 6 stars if I could but over the last 3 times we have had the same server that's a young girl, black hair, with glasses. Each time we've gone there's only about 3-4 other tables sometimes less than that and the service is awful. Last time we came she gave us a used salsa bowl with old chip fragments... Normal issues are she forgets silverware, no refills, no pre-bussing, forgets to put in orders, and basically have to ask her for basic items (silverware, water, etc.) every time we come. Have to ask multiple times for same items. Again I understand it's just one server and outside of that the place is well deserving of 5 stars. Hope her service changes because I'm not the one who has made comments in my family and friends that go there and really brings down the experience. Other than that... We like this place because it's close to the flavors you find in Globe, Arizona. On our last visit ,We had a piña colada, cheese crisp with green chiles and a taco, tostada and enchilada combo. The cheese crisp was delicious especially with the green chilies on top. I felt my piña colada could've been blended smoother. It had large chunks of ice in it. The combo plate we got was just OK. We felt it was a bit salty.I will say, the time before our last visit was a great experience and the food was good. I highly recommend getting the flour tortilla chips versus the corn. This isn't the traditional authentic Mexican Food we are accustomed too! It's considered a Sonoran-style Mexican more a Globe/Miami tradition. This is a family run business with various locations throughout the valley, the Gilbert location is the latest. Had seen a local article in our community paper so we went in for lunch on March 5th. Arrived just as they opened- we were the first patrons through the doors that day. Server was attentive and addressed us to sit anywhere we'd like and she would be right with us. Started with a ice tea and a Dosxx beer accompanied by a small bowl of chips & salsa. Chips were fairly tasty as they seem to be fried from corn tortillas in house. The salsa we weren't big fans of way to much cumin spice for our liking and not a lot of heat. We were given time to look over the menu along with the additional pamphlet provided with their lunch specials. Not to extensive of a menu and the daily lunch bargain prices seemed fairly reasonable (prior to questioning the server). My husband decided on a quesadilla with meat ($9.75) which I thought was unusual for him because he's generally a burrito guy however he didn't seem to be in the mood with their choices. I ended up choosing the combination plate #10 which comes with a cheese enchilada, shredded beef taco rice & beans ($12). In getting back to my questioning their lunch specials ( before ordering) they had a few choices for around 8 to 10 dollars that included two items, but no rice & beans just as that quesadilla. Kitchen was slow in sending out our meals. The food flavor and flare was mediocre at best. Over all the prices were pretty high for our portions and the lunch deal options a let down for what's offered and what's excluded from those options. Our bill was around $35+ change which come to find out after included an additional service fee of 3.5% ( card-fee) plus tax and tip. To expensive for the experience with dining in for just two. This had been a place we'd been wanting to try but it wasn't what we had hoped for base on the article we read (see attached pics). Been going here for several years. The food is generally good, however they have raised the prices to an exorbitant extent. $4.00 for Soda? Plus service charge for credit cards? Service has also declined in quality in the past year. Even though I used to go often, I rarely go now, no value for the money. Seating is sometimes and issue as well. And God forbid you come int anywhere near closing time as they are mopping and putting chairs up wihile you eat. read more

We have been going to this place almost weekly for a few years, but this last time we noticed they raised prices (which is fine), but are also charging an additional 3.5% to pay with a credit card. This is a cost of doing business and if you raise food cost you should not also charge for a CC fee. Doing this only reduces the tip for your server. We unfortunately will not be back. read more
